Preparation - 8 - Preparation Charging the Battery Use the dedicated AC adaptor (supplied), USB connection cable (supplied) and batt ery . • The battery is not c harged when the camera is shipped. Charge the battery be fore use. • Charge t h e battery only whe n it is inser ted in the ca mera.

Preparation - 14 - Inserting and Removin g the Card (optiona l) • Check that t his unit is turned of f. • We rec ommend us ing a Panasonic card. Slide t he release le ver in the direction of the arrow and open the card/battery door .
- 15 - Preparation About the Built-in Memory /the Card • Y ou can copy the recor ded pic tures to a card. ( P108) • Memory size: Approx. 70 MB • The access time f or the built-in memory may be longe r than the access ti me fo r a card. The following cards, which conform to the SD video standard, can be used with this unit.
Preparation - 16 - Note • During a ccess (image wr iting, reading and d eletin g, form atting etc.), do not turn off the power , remove the ba ttery , card or disconnec t the AC adaptor (su pplied). Furthermore, do not subject th e camera to vibr ati on, impact or st atic electricity .

Preparation - 18 - Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the c amera is shipped. Slide t he REC/PLA Y sw itch to [ ! ] and then tu rn the camera on. • If the langua ge selec t screen is not disp layed, proceed t o step 4 . Press [MENU/SET] .
- 19 - Preparation Select [Clock Set] in the [Rec] or [Setup] menu, and press [MENU/SET ]. (P38) • The clock can be reset as show n in steps 5 and 6 . • The clock setting is maint aine d for 3 months using the built-in clock battery even without the battery .
Preparation - 20 - Tip s for t aking good pictures Hold the camera gen tly with both han ds, keep yo ur arms still at you r side and st and with your fee t slightly ap art. • T o prevent dropping, be sure to attach t he supplied strap and fit it to your wrist.
- 21 - Basic Basic Selecting the Recordin g Mode ∫ List of Recording M odes Note • When the mode has been s witched f rom Playback Mode to Recor ding Mode, t he previously set Recording Mod e will be set. Slide t he REC/PLA Y sw itch to [ ! ]. Press [MODE].
Basic - 22 - Recording Mode: T aking pictures using the autom atic function (Intelligent Auto Mode) The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the sub ject and the recording conditions so we recom mend this mode f or beginners or those who want t o leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .
- 23 - Basic When the camera identifies the optimum scene, the i con of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 s econds, after which it s color changes to the usual red. Basic - 24 - Following menus ca n be set. • For th e setti ng me thod of t he me nu, refer to P38 . ¢ Setting s may be dif ferent f rom other Recording Modes. ∫ [Burst] ( P83) [Burst] can be set in [ ]. In this setting, t he bur st speed is automatically adjusted based on the movement of the subject.
- 25 - Basic ∫ [iHa ndheld Nit e Shot] When [iHandheld Nite Shot] is set to [ON] and [ ] is detected while taking handheld night shots, pictures of the night scenery will be taken at a high burst speed and comp osed into a single picture.
Basic - 26 - Recording Mode: T aking pictures with your favor ite settings (Normal Picture M ode) The camera automatically sets the shutt er speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various settings in the [Rec] menu.
- 27 - Basic Focusing Aim the AF area a t the subject, and then press the s hutter button halfway . • The AF area may be d isplayed la rger for cert ain zoom magnif ications and in dark places. ∫ About f ocus range The focus range is displayed when operating the zoom.
Basic - 28 - ∫ When the subject is not in focus (such as when it is not in the center of the composition of the picture you want to take) 1 Aim the AF area at the su bject, and press the shutter button h alfway to fix the focus and exposure. 2 Press and hold the shutter button halfway while moving the camera as you compose the picture.

Basic - 34 - Playing Back Motion P ictures This unit was designed to play motion pictures using the A VCHD, M P4 and QuickTime Motion JPEG formats. Press 2 / 1 to select a picture with a Motion Picture icon (such as [ ]/[ ]), an d then press 3 to p lay back.
- 35 - Basic Y ou can create a single s till picture from a rec orded motion picture. Press 3 to p ause motion picture pla yback. Press [MENU/SET] . • Confirmati on screen is displayed. It is executed when [Y es] is selected . Exit th e menu af ter it is execut ed.
Basic - 36 - Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • Pictures on the built-in memor y or the card that are be ing played back will be delete d. • Picture s t hat are not in th e DC F sta ndard or those that ar e protected cannot be deleted .
- 37 - Basic Note • Do not turn th e camera of f while dele ting. Use a battery with suf ficient battery power . • Depending on th e number of pictures to be de leted, it may take some t ime to delete them. T o delete multiple pi ctures (up to 50) or all th e pictures Press [ ].
Basic - 38 - Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you to choose the settings for taking pict ures and playing them back just as you like and menus that enable you to have more fun with the camera and use it more easil y .

Basic - 40 - About the Setup Menu [Clock Set], [Economy] and [A uto Review] are i m portant items. Check their s ettings before using them. For details on how to select the [ Setup] menu settings, refer to P38 . • Refer to P18 for details. • Press 3 if you are using Summer T ime [ ].
- 41 - Basic • The numb er of d ays that have passed si nce the departure date can be printed out u s ing the “ PHO T OfunSTUDIO ” bu ndle d soft ware on the CD-ROM (supplie d). • The tra ve l date is calculat ed using the date in the clock se tting and the departure date you set.
Basic - 42 - • When you co nnec t the camera t o a TV , the volume of th e T V speak ers does not change. Als o, when connect ed, no sound is output f rom the camera s pea k ers. • Some subjec t s may appear diff erently from actualit y on the LCD moni t or.

Basic - 44 - • When you t ake pictures with the flash or in dark places, th e Hi stogram is displayed in orange bec au se th e recorded picture and th e Hist ogram do not match each ot he r . • The Histogram is an app roximation in the Recordin g Mode.
- 45 - Basic • Press the s hutter but ton halfway or turn the camera of f and on to canc el [Sleep Mode]. • [Slee p Mode] is set to [5 MI N . ] in the Intel l i gent Auto Mode. • Press any but t on to turn on the LCD monitor aga in. • [Sleep Mode] does not work in the following cases.
Basic - 46 - • The folde r numbe r is updat ed and the file number sta rts from 0001. • A folder number bet w een 100 a nd 999 c an be assi gned. When the f older number reaches 99 9, the number can not be reset. We recommend formatti ng the ca rd (P48) af ter savin g th e data on a PC or elsewhere.

- 49 - Basic • The S tabiliz er functio n is switched be tween [On] and [Of f] every time [MENU/SET] is presse d during the [S tabilizer Demo.]. • In Playback Mode, [ S tabilizer Demo.] canno t be displayed. • [S tabilizer Demo.] is an a pproximation.
Recording - 50 - Recording About the LCD Monitor Press [DISP .] to c hange. A LCD monitor • When the men u screen a ppears , the [DI SP .] button is not activate d. During Pl ayback Zoom, while playing b ack motion pi ctures and duri ng a s lide s how , you can only select “ Normal display H ” or “ No display J ” .
- 51 - Recording Applicable modes: Using the Zoom Y ou can zoom in to make people and objects appear closer or zoom out to record landscapes in wide angle. Setting the number of pixels to 10M or less will operate t he Extended Optical Zoom to take zoomed pictures wit hout affecting quality .
Recording - 52 - ∫ Screen display • When using the Z oom function, an estimate of the focu s range will appea r in conjunction with the zoom display b ar . (Example : 0.5 m (1.6 ft.) – ¶ ) Note • The indic ate d z oom magn ificatio n i s an approximati on.
- 53 - Recording Applicable modes: T aking Pictures Using the Built-in Flash Set the flash to match the recording. Press 1 [ ‰ ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct the item and then p ress [MENU/SET]. ¢ 1 This can be set only when Intellige nt Auto Mode is set.
Recording - 54 - ∫ A vailable Flash S ettings in Re cording Mode The available flash settings depend on the Recording Mode. ( ± : Available, —: Not available, ¥ : S cene Mode initial setting) ¢ [ ] is displayed. • The flash se tting may chan ge if the Recor ding Mode is changed.
- 55 - Recording ∫ Shutter speed f or each flash sett ing ¢ 1 The shutter speed cha nges depend ing on the [Min. Shtr S peed] setting. ¢ 2 When [Min. Shtr S peed] is set to [AUTO ]. ¢ 3 When [ ] in [Se nsitivity] is set . • ¢ 2, 3: The shut t er speed becomes a maximum of 1 second in the fol lowing cases.
Recording - 56 - Applicable modes: T aking Close-up Pictur es ([AF M acro]/[Macro Zo om]) This mode allows you to take c lose-up pictu res of a subject, e.g. when taking pictures of flowers. Press 4 [ # ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct the item and then p ress [MENU/SET].

Recording - 58 - Applicable modes: Compensating the Exposure Use this function when you c annot achieve appropriate expos ure due to the difference in brightness between the subject and the background. Look at t he following examples. Note • EV is an abbrevia tion of [Exposure V alue], a unit i ndic ating the amount of exposure.
- 59 - Recording Applicable modes: T aking Pictures Using Auto Bracket In this mode, 3 pictures are automatic ally recorded in the selected exposure compensation range each time the s hutter button is pressed. With Auto Bracket d 1E V Note • When Aut o Bracket is set, [ ] is di s played on t he scr een.
Recording - 60 - Recording Mode: Record pictures that lo ok like dioramas (Miniature Effect Mode) By creating areas that are blurred and areas that are not, the picture will look like that of a miniature model. Motion pict ures can also be recorded with dioram a effect s that appear to be played back in fast forward.
- 61 - Recording Recording Mode: T aking pictures that match the s cene being recorded (Scene Mode) When you select a Scene Mode to match the su bject and recording situation, the camera sets the optimal exposure and hue to obtai n the desired picture.
Recording - 62 - When taking pictures o f people outdoors during the dayt ime, this mode allows you to improve the appe arance and make their skin tones look healthier . ∫ T echnique for Por t rait Mo de T o make t his mode more effective: 1 Rotate the zoom lever as far as possible to T ele.
- 63 - Recording Pictures are recorded continuous ly while moving the camera horizontally or vertically , and are combined to make a single panorama picture. 1 Press 3 / 4 to se lect the recording d irection and then press [MENU/SET]. 2 Af ter confirming the recording direction, press [MENU/ SET].
Recording - 64 - Note • The zoom posit ion is fixe d to Wide. • The focus , whi te ba lanc e, an d ex posur e ar e fix ed at the op timu m va lues for th e fir st pic ture .
- 65 - Recording Setting for when you want to take pi c ture s of sports scenes or other fast-moving events. Note • Shut ter sp eed ma y s l ow do w n for up to 1 seco nd . • This mode is suit a ble for taking pict ures of subject s at dist ances of 5 m (16 feet) or more.
Recording - 66 - This mode allows y ou to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in rest aurants, etc. This takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When you us e the flash, the light from it is weaker t han usual.
- 67 - Recording Select this when you want to t ak e pictures of a pet such as a dog or a cat. Y ou can set your pet’s birthday and name. For information about [Age] or [Name], refer to [ Baby1]/[Baby2] on P66 . Select this when y ou want to take pictures of a sunset view .
Recording - 68 - Recording Mode: T aking 3D pictures (3D Photo M ode) Pictures are recorded continuously while movi ng the camera horizontally , and two pictures selected automatically are combined to make a single 3D picture. T o view 3D pict ures, a television that supports 3D is required.
- 69 - Recording Applicable modes: Recording T aking a Picture with Face Recognition Function Face Recognition is a function which finds a face resembling a registered face and prioritizes focus and exposure automatically .
Recording - 70 - Y ou can register information such as names and birthdays for face images of up to 6 people. Registration can be facilitated by taking multiple face images of each p erson. (up to 3 pictures/registration) Select [Fa ce Reco g.] on the [Rec] m enu, an d then press [MENU/SET].
- 71 - Recording Select item to edit with 3 / 4 , and then press [MENU/SET]. • Y ou can register up t o 3 fac e images. • Exit th e menu af ter it is set. Item Description of settings [Name] It is possible to register names. 1 Press 4 to select [SET] and then press [MENU/SET].
Recording - 72 - Y ou can modify the pictures or information of an already registered person. Y ou c an also delete the information of the registered person. 1 Select [Face Recog.] from the [Rec] menu, and then press [MENU/SET ]. (P38) 2 Press 4 to select [MEMORY] and press [MENU/SET ].
- 73 - Recording Entering T ext It is possible to enter babies ’ and pet s’ names and the nam es of travel des tinations when recording. (Only alphabet ical characters and symbols c an be entered.) Displa y the entry screen. • Y ou can display th e ent ry scree n vi a the following operatio ns.
Recording - 74 - Using the [Rec] Menu For details on [Rec] m enu settings, refer to P38 . Applicable modes: Set the number of pixels. The higher the nu mbers of pixels, the finer the det ail of the pictures will appear even when they are printed ont o large sheets.
- 75 - Recording Applicable modes: Set the compression rate at which the pictures are to be stored. Note • The setting is fixed to [ › ] in [High Sens.
Recording - 76 - Applicable modes: This allows the Sensitivity to light (ISO sensit ivity) to be set. Setting to a higher figure enables pictures to be taken even in dark plac es without the re sulting pictures coming out dark.
- 77 - Recording Applicable modes: In sunlight, under incandescent lights or in ot her such conditions where the color of white takes on a reddish or bluish tinge, thi s item adjust s t o t he color of white which is closest to what is seen by the eye i n ac cordance with the light source.
Recording - 78 - Set the White Balance value. Use to match t he condition when taking photographs. 1 Select [ Ó ] and then press [MENU/SET]. 2 Aim the camera at a sheet of white p aper etc. so that the frame in the center is filled by th e white object only and then press [MENU/SET].
- 79 - Recording Applicable modes: This allows the focusing method that suit s the positions and number of the subjects to be selected. ¢ [ Ø ] will be used during motion pict ure recording. Note • The fo cus se tting is f ixed to [ Ø ] in Miniature Effect Mo de.
Recording - 80 - ∫ About [ š ] ([F ace Detecti on]) The following AF area fram es are displayed when t he camera detects the face s. Y ellow: When the shutter button is pressed halfway , the frame turns gre en when the camera is focused. White : Displayed when more than one face is detected.
- 81 - Recording Applicable modes: As long as the camera is held steady , the camera will automatically adjust the focus and focus adjustment will then be quicker when the shut ter is pressed. This is useful when you do not want to miss a picture-taking opp ortunity .
Recording - 82 - Applicable modes: Y ou can take bright pictures in d ark places by setting [Min. Shtr Speed] slower . Also, you can set it faster to reduce the blur of the subject. Settings: [ AUTO], [1/125], [1/60], [1/30], [1/15], [1/8], [1/4], [1/2], [1] Note • This should usually be set to [A UTO] to take pi ctures.
- 83 - Recording Applicable modes: Pictures are taken continuously wh ile t he shutter button is pressed. ¢ This can be set only when Intelligent Auto Mode is set. Note • When [ ] or [ ] is set, focus pr ediction will be pe rformed in a possibl e range to prioriti ze the burst sp eed .
Recording - 84 - Applicable modes: Sets various color ef fects, including making the picture sharper , brighter , or applying a sepia tone. ¢ 1 This can be set only when Intellige nt Auto Mode is set. ¢ 2 This ca n be s et only during Normal Pict ure Mode.
- 85 - Recording Applicable modes: Using one of these modes, jitt er during picture taking is detected, and the camera automatically compensates the jitter , enabling jitter-free images to be taken. Setti ngs: [ON]/ [OFF] Note • S tabilize r is fixed to [OFF] in [Panorama Shot] in Sc en e Mode.
Recording - 86 - Using the [Motion Pictur e] Menu For det ails on [Moti on Pictu r e ] menu setti ngs, refer to P38 . In [Panorama Shot] in Scene Mode, the [Moti on Picture] menu will not be displayed. Applicable modes: This sets up t he data format of motion pictures.

Playback/Editing - 88 - Playback/Editing V arious meth ods of playback Y ou can play back the recorded pictures in various methods. Slide t he REC/PLA Y sw itch to [ ( ], and then press [MODE]. Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select item, and th en press [MENU/SET].
- 89 - Playback/Editing Y ou can play back the pictures you have taken in synchronizat ion with music, and you can do this in sequence while l eaving a fixed interval between each of the pictures. Y ou can also put together a slide show co mposed of only s till pictures, only m otion pictures, only 3D p ictures etc.
Playback/Editing - 90 - ∫ Changing the slide sh ow settings Y ou can change the settings for Slide Show Playback by selecting [Effect] or [Setup] on the slide s how menu screen. [Effect] This allows you to select the screen ef f ects or music effects when switching from one picture to the next.
- 91 - Playback/Editing Pictures are class ified into only still pictures, on ly mot ion pictures, or only 3D pict ures etc., and played back. ∫ About the categories to be sorted It will be sorted as following when [Category Selection] is set. ¢ Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to sel e c t the perso n to play back and th en pre ss [MENU/SET].
Playback/Editing - 92 - Y ou can display pictures by recording date. Note • The recor ding date of the picture s elected in the playbac k scre en become s the date s elected when the calendar scree n is fi rs t display ed.
- 93 - Playback/Editing Having Fun with Record ed Pictures The brightness and color of the pictures t aken can be balanced. • With [Aut o Retouch] , a new ed ited picture is cre at ed. Check that there is fre e s p ace on the built- in memory or the card.
Playback/Editing - 94 - Y ou can add your desired effects to the pictures that you have taken. • With [Creat iv e Retouch], a new edited pi c ture is cr e ated. Check that th ere is free sp ace on the built- in memory or the card. [Creativ e Ret ouch] cannot be used if the card’ s Writ e-P rotect switch is set to [ LOCK] .
