- 9 - Before Use At the time when this camera is purchased, the LCD monitor is stowed in the camera body . Bring out the LCD monitor as shown below . 1 Open the LCD monitor . (Maximum 180 o ) 2 It can be rot ated 180 o forwards. 3 Return the monitor to its original position.
Before Use - 10 - Note • Be careful as this u nit may get scratched if y ou rotate the LCD monitor without open ing the LCD monitor f ully . • Check that the terminal door is cl osed when rot ating t h e LCD m onitor .

Preparation - 12 - Preparation Att aching the L ens Cap/Shoulder Strap ∫ Att achi ng the Lens Cap • When you turn the camer a off or carry th e camera, attac h the lens cap to prot ect the surface of the lens. Pass the s tring through the hole on the camer a.
- 13 - Preparation ∫ Att aching t he Shoulde r Stra p • We recom mend attac hing the shoulder strap when using the cam era to prevent it from dropping. Pass the shoul der strap through the hole at the shoulder s trap eyelet. Pass the s houlder strap thro ugh the stopper and fasten the shoulder strap.
Preparation - 14 - Att aching the L ens Hood In bright sunlight or backlight, the lens hood will minimise lens flare and ghosting. The lens hood cuts of f excess lighting and improves the picture quality . • Check that t he camera is turned of f. • Close the fl ash.
- 15 - Preparation Charging the Battery ∫ About batteries that you can use with this unit • Use the dedicate d charger and battery . • The battery is not c harged when the camera is shipped. Charge the battery before use. • Charge th e battery with the charg er indoors.
Preparation - 16 - ∫ About the [CH ARGE] indi cator The [CHARGE] indicator tu rns on: The [CHARGE] indicator is turned on during charging. The [CHARGE] indicator tu rns off: The [CHARGE] indicator will turn of f once the charging has completed without any problem.

Preparation - 18 - ∫ Recor ding motion pictu res (When usi ng the LCD monitor) • These times are f or an ambient temperat ure of 23 o C (73.4 o F) and a humidity of 50%RH.
- 19 - Preparation Inserting and Removin g the Card (optiona l)/the Battery • T urn the power switch t o [OFF] and confir m that th e lens barrel is retr acted. • We rec ommend using a Panasonic card. Slide t he release leve r in the direction of the arrow and open the c ard/battery door .
Preparation - 20 - About the Built-in Memory /the Card • Y ou can copy the recorded pict ures to a card. ( P155) • Memory size: Approx. 70 MB • The access time for th e built-in memory may be longe r than the acce ss time for a card. The following cards which conform to t he SD video s tandard can be used with this unit.
- 21 - Preparation Note • Do not turn this unit off, remove it s battery or card, or disconnect the AC adaptor (optional) when the access indication is lit (when pictures are be ing written, read or deleted, or the bu ilt-in memory or the card is b eing formatted).
Preparation - 22 - ∫ About the display o f the number o f recordable pictures and avai lable recording time • Switching bet ween the display of number of recordable picture s and available recording time can be perfo rmed in the [REMAINING DISP . ] (P55) in the [S ETUP] menu.
- 23 - Preparation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the c amera is shipped. T urn the camera on. • The power lamp 1 light s when you turn thi s unit on. • If the lan guage select scree n is no t displayed, proceed t o step 4 .
Preparation - 24 - Select [CLOC K SET] in the [REC ] or [SETUP ] menu, an d press 1 . (P48) • The clock can be reset as show n in steps 5 and 6 . • The clock setting is maint ained for 3 months using the built-in clock battery even without the battery .

Basic - 26 - ∫ Advanced ∫ Advanced Scene Mode Aperture-Priority AE Mode (P82) The shutter speed is automatically det ermined by the aperture value you set. Shutter-Priority AE Mod e (P82) The aperture v alue is automatically determined by the shutter s peed you set.
- 27 - Basic Tip s for t aking good pic tures ∫ Direction Detection Function ([ROT A TE DISP .]) Pictures recorded with the camera held vertica lly are played back vertically (rotated).
Basic - 28 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures with Y our Favourite Se ttings (Programme AE Mode) The camera automatically sets the shutt e r speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various settings in [REC] menu.
- 29 - Basic In Programm e AE Mode, y ou can change the preset aperture value and shutter speed without changing the exposure. This is called P rogramme Shift.
Basic - 30 - Focusing Aim the AF area at the subject, and then press the shutter b utton halfway . • AF area is displ ayed larger during the dig ital zoom or when it is dark. ∫ About f ocus ran ge The focus range is displayed when operating the zoom .
- 31 - Basic ∫ When the subject is not in focus (such as when it is not in the centre of t he composition of the picture you want to take) 1 Aim the AF area at the subj ect, and then p ress the shutter b utton halfway to fix the focus and exposure. 2 Press and hold the shutter button halfway while moving the camera as you compose the picture.
Basic - 32 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures Using the Autom atic Function (Intelligent Auto Mode) The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the sub ject and the recording conditions so we recom mend this mode f or beginners or those who want to leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .

Basic - 34 - When the camera identifies the optimum scene, the i c on of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 seconds , af ter wh ich it s colour changes to the usual red. Basic - 36 - ∫ About t he recordin g format for reco rding motion picture s This unit can record motion pictures in eit her A VCHD or MP4 formats. A VCHD: Y ou can rec ord high definition qualit y images wit h this format. It is suit able for viewing on a large format TV or for saving to disc.

Basic - 38 - S till pictures can be recorded even while recording a motion pict ure. (simultaneous recording) During motion pi cture recording, press th e shutter button fully to re cord a still picture . • The picture is saved with the following c onditions.

- 41 - Basic ∫ Switching the d isplayed image wh ile maintaining the Playback Zoom Y ou can switch the displayed image while maint aining the same zoom magnification and zoom position for the Playback Zoom. Rotating the rear d ial to select the picture during Playbac k Zoom.
Basic - 42 - Playing Back Motion P ictures This unit was designed to play motion pictures using the A VCHD, MP4 and QuickTime Motion JPEG formats. ∫ Operations performe d during Motion Picture Playback The cursor displayed during playback is the same as 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 .
- 43 - Basic Y ou can create a single still picture from a recorded m otion picture. Press 3 to p ause mo tion picture playba ck. Press [MENU/SET] . • Confirmati on screen is displaye d. It is executed when [YES] is select ed. Exit th e menu af ter it is execut ed.
Basic - 44 - Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • Pictures on the bu ilt-in memory or the card, which are being played back will be del eted. • Picture s that are not in the DCF st andard or th ose that are protec ted cannot be deleted .
- 45 - Basic Note • Burst pict ure group (pictures with the bur st icon [ ˜ ]) will b e treated as a sin gle picture. Deleting t he burst pi cture group will delete all pictur es in the gr oup. (P132) • Do not turn th e camera off while del eting.
Basic - 46 - Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you to choose the settings for taking pictures and playing them back as you like and menus that enable you t o have more fun with the camera and use it more eas ily . In particular , the [SETUP] menu contains some important settings relating to the camera’ s clock and power .
- 47 - Basic ∫ Switch ing to other menus e.g.: Switching to the [ S ETUP] menu from [REC] Mode menu 1 Press [MENU/SET]. 2 Press 2 . 3 Press 4 or rotate the rear dial to select the [SETUP] men u icon [ ]. 4 Press 1 or the rear dial. • Sele ct a me nu item next and set it.
Basic - 48 - • If you s et [MENU RESUME] (P60) in the [ SETUP ] menu to [ON ], the screen s hows the las t sel ected me nu it em w hen t he camer a wa s tu rned off. Example: In t he [REC] menu, ch ange [AF MO DE] from [ Ø ] (1-area-foc using) to [ š ] (Face Detection) ¢ ¢ When the foc us selector switch is set to [AF] in Programme AE Mode.
- 49 - Basic By using the Quick Menu, some of the menu settings can be easily found. • The feature s that can be adjusted using Quick Menu are det ermined by the mode or a display style the c amera is in. Items th at cannot be used are displayed in grey .
Basic - 50 - About the Setup Menu [CLOCK SET], [ECONOMY] and [ AUTO REVIEW] are important items. Chec k their settings before using t hem. For details on how to select the [ SETUP] m enu settings, refer to P48 . • Refer to P23 for details. • Setup/can cel of summer time [ ] can be pe rformed by pressin g 3 at the time the area is selected.
- 51 - Basic • The numb er of days that have passed s ince the departure date can b e printed out using the “PHOTOf unSTUDIO” bundl ed soft ware on th e CD-ROM (suppli ed). • The tra vel date is ca lculated using the date in t he clock sett ing and the de parture dat e you set.
Basic - 52 - • When you connect t he camera to a TV , the vol ume of the TV speake rs does not change. • Refer to P100 for details. • Refer to P108 for de tails about the [REC] Mode menu. • The focus cannot be slightly adjusted with AF lock ed when recording moti on pictures in Intelligent Auto Mode.
- 53 - Basic • The bright ness of the picture s displayed on the LCD monit or is increased so some subjec ts may appear dif ferently f rom actuality on the LCD monitor . However , this does not af fect the recorded pi ctures. • The LCD monitor auto matically ret urns to normal brightness after 3 0 seconds when recording in Power LCD Mode.
Basic - 54 - • When the recorded picture and the hi stogram do not match each other under the following condition s, the histogram is display ed in orange.
- 55 - Basic • MF position will be memorised in the fo llowing cases: – T urning the camera of f – When s witching to a type of focus other than Manual Foc us – When swi tched to Playbac k Mode • Zoom position will be set all the way to wide when the [ZOOM RESUME] is set to [OFF].
Basic - 56 - • Refer to P74 for details. • Press the s hutter butto n halfway or turn th e camera off and on to canc el [SLEEP MODE]. • [SLEEP MODE] is set to [5 MIN. ] in the Intelligent Auto Mode. • [SLE EP MO DE] is fixed to [2MIN .] when [AU TO LCD OFF ] is set to [1 5SEC.
- 57 - Basic • [AUT O REVIEW] is activat ed regardless of it s setting in th e following cases. – When us ing Auto B racket – [HANDHELD NITE SHOT] in [NIGHT PORTRAIT] – [FLASH B URST] in Scene Mode – During t he Burst Mode • In Inte lligent Au to Mode or [P HOTO FRAME] in Scene Mode, the Aut o Review function is fixed to [ 2SEC.
Basic - 58 - • When the [RES ET] setting is selec ted during recording, the operati on that reset s the lens is also performed at th e same time. Y ou will hear the sound of the lens ope rating but this is normal and not ind icative of malfunction ing.
- 59 - Basic ¢ 1 When [VIDEO OUT] is se t to [P AL] ¢ 2 When [VIDEO OUT] is se t to [NTSC] • If the images are n ot output on the TV when the setting is [AUTO ], match with the image f ormat your TV can displ ay , and select number of effect ive scanning lines.
Basic - 60 - • This will work when th e HDMI mini cable (optional) is con nected. • Refer to P160 for t he method to playback 3D picture s in 3D. • Use a battery with suf ficient batte ry power or the AC adaptor (op tional) when format ting. Do not turn the c amera off during fo rmatting.

Recording - 62 - Recording About the LCD Monitor/Viewfinder Press [DISPLA Y] to change. • When the menu s creen appears, the [DISPLA Y] butto n is no t activate d. During Playback Z oom, while p laying bac k Motion Picture s and during a Slide Show , you can only select E or G .

Recording - 64 - Applicable modes: Using the Zoom Y ou can zoom-in to make people and objects appear closer or zoom- out to record landscapes in wide angle. T o make subj ects appear e ven closer (max imum of 46.9 k ) , do not set the picture size t o the highest setting for each aspect ratio ( X / Y / W /) .
- 65 - Recording ∫ T ypes of zooms • When using the zoom function, an estimate of the focus range will appear in conjunction with the zoom display bar . [Example: 0.3 m (0.99 ft.) – ¶ ] ¢ The magnific ation level diff ers depending on [PI CTURE S IZE] and [ASPECT RA T IO] settin g.
Recording - 66 - Note • The indic ated zoom magnificat ion is an approxim ation. • “EZ” is an abbrev iation of “Extra Opti cal Zoom”. It is possibl e to take more magnif ied pictures with the o ptical zoom. • The lens barrel ex tends or retr acts accordin g to the zoom positio n.
- 67 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures using the Flas h A T o open the f lash Press the flash open button. B T o clos e the fl ash Press the flash until it clicks. • Be sure to clos e the flash when not in use. • The flas h setting is fi xed to [ Œ ] while th e flash is cl osed .
Recording - 68 - ¢ The flash is activated twice. The subject should not mov e until the second flash is activated. Flash interval depends on the brightness of the subject. [RED-EYE REMOV AL] (P127) on the [REC] Mode menu is set to [ON], [ ] appears on the flash ico n .
- 69 - Recording ∫ A vailable flash settings in Reco rding Mode The available flash settings depend on the Recording Mode. ( ± : Available, —: Not available, ¥ : Initial setting of Advanced Scene Mode and Scene Mode) ¢ 1 [ ] is displayed.
Recording - 70 - ∫ The available flash range • The avail able flash range is an app roximation. ¢ 1 When t he [IS O LIM IT SET ] (P1 12) is set to [AU TO]. ∫ Shutter speed f or each flash sett ing ¢ 2 It may vary depending on the [MIN. SHTR SPEED] setting.
- 71 - Recording Adjust the flash output when the subject is smal l, or the reflectivity is very high or low . Press 3 [ È ] se veral times to display [FLASH], and t hen pr ess 2 / 1 to set the flash outp ut. • Y o u can ad just fr om [ j 2 EV] to [ i 2 EV] i n steps of [ 1/3 EV ].
Recording - 72 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Close-up Pictures This mode allows you to take close-up pictures of a subject, e.g. when taking pictures of flowers. Y ou can take pictures of a subject as close as 1 cm (0. 04 feet) from the lens by rotating the zoom lever upm ost to Wide ( 1 k ).
- 73 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures with Manual Fo cus Use this function when you want to f ix the focus or when the distance between the lens and the subject is determined and you do not want to ac tivate Auto Focus. Set [SIDE LEVER] in t he [SETUP] menu to [FOCUS].
Recording - 74 - ∫ MF Assist If [MF ASSIST] (P56) in the [SETUP] menu is set to [ON], when focus is achieved, the MF area (locations that are in focus) is enlarged. • If you pre s s [MENU/S ET] while MF Assist is displa yed, the MF area can be moved us ing 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 .
- 75 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures with the Self-Timer Note • When you pres s the shutter butt on once fully , the subject is automatically fo cused just before recording.
Recording - 76 - Applicable modes: Compensating the Exposure Use this function when you c annot achieve appropriate expos ure due to the difference in brightness between the su bject and the backgr ound. ∫ Operate with the rear dial 1 Press the rear dial and enable [ È ].
- 77 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures Using Auto Bra cket In this mode, 3 pictures are automatic ally recorded in the selected expos ure compensation range each time the s hutter button is pressed. With Auto Bracket d 1E V Note • When Aut o Bracket is set, [ ] is displayed on the screen .
Recording - 78 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures Using Burst Mo de Pictures are taken continuously wh ile t he shutter button is pressed. Burst speed can be selected t o match t he reco rding conditions or subjects. Press [ ˜ ]. Press 2 / 1 to sele ct the burst sp eed and then press [MENU/SET].
- 79 - Recording Note • When [ ] or [ ] is set, f ocus prediction will be performed in a possible ra nge to prioriti se the burst sp eed. Therefo re, if you try to ta ke a picture of a s ubject that is mov ing fast, it may ha ve trouble with focusin g or it m ay take ti me to focus.
Recording - 80 - Applicable modes: Setting the Lig ht Sensitivity This allows the sens itivity to light (ISO sens itivity) to be set. Sett ing to a higher figure enables pictures to be taken even in dark plac es without the resulting pictures coming out dark.
- 81 - Recording ∫ About [ ] (Intelligent ISO sensitivity control) The cam era detec ts movement of the subj ect and then auto mati cally sets the optim um IS O sensitivity and shutter speed to suit the m ovement of the s ubject and brightness of the scene to m inimise the jitter of the s ubject.
Recording - 82 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures by Specifying the Aperture/ Shutter Speed Set the apertur e value to a higher num ber when you wan t a sharp fo cus background. Set the aperture value to a lower number when you want a soft focus background.
- 83 - Recording Determine the exposu re by manually setting the aper ture value and the shutter speed. The Manual Exposure Assistance appears on the lower portion of t he screen to indicate the exposure. Set the mod e dial to [ ]. Rot ate the rear dia l to set the aperture and s hutter speed .
Recording - 84 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures with different im age effects (Creative Control Mode) While checking the sub ject on the screen, you can set desired effects and continue taking pictures. Set the mod e dial to [ ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct an item, and t hen press [MENU/SET].
- 85 - Recording Blurring above and below or to t h e left and right of the set range, it will look as though the picture was of a miniature. 1 Select [MINIA TURE E FFECT] using Step 2 on P84 and then press [MENU/SET]. 2 Press 4 to display the setting screen.
Recording - 86 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Expressive Portraits and Landscape Pictures (A dvanced Scene Mode) Y ou can take high-quality pictures of such subjects as people, scenery , sporting events and activities, people in night scenes and f l owers in accordance with the surrounding conditions.
- 87 - Recording This allows you to take pictures of a wide lands cape. Set here when you want to take pictur es of sports scenes or other fast-m oving events. Note • This mode is suit able for takin g pictures of subj ects at dist ances of 5 m (16.
Recording - 88 - This allows you to take pictures of a person and the backg round with near real-life brightness. ∫ Handhe ld Night Shot This mode allows you to record multiple pict ures of night scenes at high speed, which are combined to make a single picture.
- 89 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures that Match the S cene Being Recorded (Scene Mode) When you select a Scene Mode t o match the su bject and recording situation, the camera sets the optimal expos ure and hue t o obtain the desired picture.
Recording - 90 - Y ou can take pictures with connections suitable for creating panorama images. ∫ Sett ing the recordi ng direction 1 Press 3 / 4 to se lect the recording d irection and then p ress [MENU/SET]. • The horizont al/vertical guidelin e will be displayed.
- 91 - Recording This mode allows you to take pictures with a candle-lit atmosphere. ∫ T echnique fo r Cand le Light Mode • This is more ef fective when t aking pictures without us ing the flash. Note • We rec ommend using a tripod and the S elf-timer fo r takin g pictures .
Recording - 92 - Select this mode when you want to t ake pictures of a pet such as a dog or a cat. Y ou can set your pet’s birthday and name. For information about [AGE] or [NAME], refer to [BABY1]/[BABY 2] on P91 . Select this when you want to t ake pictures of sunset view .
- 93 - Recording When you move the camera to follow a subject moving in one direction such as a runner or car , the background becomes a blur and the s ubject stays focused. This effect is called “panning”. This mode allows you to obt ain this effect easier .
