- 8 - Before Use ∫ When i nner side of the l ens is fog ged (condensat ion) This unit has been designed to p revent condensation by Anti-fog glass, ho wever it may be caused by the envi ronment in which the camera is used. It is not a malfunctio n or failure of the camera.
- 9 - Before Use About the loc ation name infor mation of this uni t Be sure to read the “User License Agreement for Location Name data” on P241 before using. When [GPS Se tting] is set to [ON], GPS function will operat e even when this unit is turned off.
- 10 - Before Use (Import a nt) About the W aterproof/Dustp roof and Anti-shock Perfo rmance of the Camera This does not guarant ee no des truct ion, no malf unction, or wate rproof ing in all conditi ons.
- 11 - Before Use ∫ Handli ng of the ca m era • Wat erproofing is not gu aranteed if the un it is subject to an impac t as a res ult of bei ng hit or dropped etc. If an imp act to the camera occu rs, it should be inspecte d (subject to a fee) by Pa nasonic t o verify that the wate rproofing is still ef fective.
- 12 - Before Use 1 Check that there are no foreign objects o n the inner side of the side door . • If there is any foreign obje c t, such as lint, hair , sand, etc., on the surrou nding area, water will leak within a few seconds causing mal function.
- 13 - Before Use • Use the camera und erwater to 13 m (43 feet ) w ith the water temperat ure between 0 o C and 40 o C (32 o F and 104 o F). • Do not u s e f or sc uba di ving (Aq ualung). • Do no t use th e camer a at a dep th of ov er 13 m (43 f eet).

- 18 - Prepar ation Charging the Bat tery ∫ About batteries that you can use with this unit • Use the dedicate d charger and bat tery . • The batter y is not charged when th e camera is shipped . Charge the b attery bef ore use. • Charge the bat tery with the c harger indoors.
- 19 - Prepar ation ∫ About the [CHARGE] indicat or • When the [ CHARGE] indicato r flashes – The battery t emperature is too hig h or too low . It is re commended to c harge the bat tery again in an ambient t emperature between 10 o C and 30 o C (50 o F a nd 86 o F).
- 20 - Prepar ation ∫ Recording still pictures Recording conditions by CIP A standard • CIP A is an abbrev iation of [Camera & Imag ing Products Assoc iation]. • T emperatu re: 23 o C (73. 4 o F)/Humidity: 50%RH when LCD mo nitor is on. • Using a Panasonic SD Memory Card (32 MB).
- 21 - Prepar ation ∫ Record ing motion pic tures • These ti mes are for an ambien t temperature of 23 o C ( 73.4 o F) and a humidit y of 50%RH. Ple a se be aware that th ese times are approxi mate. • T ime of recording without using the GPS fu nction.
- 22 - Prepar ation Inserting and Removing t he Card (optional)/t he Battery • Che ck that this un it is turn ed off. • Confirm that there is no foreign object . (P12) • We rec ommend us ing a Panasonic card. 1 1 : Slide the [LO CK] switch A , an d rel ease the l ock.
- 23 - Prepar ation • Remove the battery af ter use. (The ba t tery will be exhauste d if left for a long period of time af ter being charge d.) • T urn the camer a off an d wait for t he “LUMIX” displ ay on the LCD monito r to clear before removi ng the card or batt ery .
- 24 - Prepar ation About the Built-in Memory/ the Card • Y ou can copy the record ed pictures to a card. (P172) • Memory size: Approx. 10 MB • The access time fo r the built-in memo ry may be longe r than the access t ime f or a c ard. The following card s which conform to the SD video standard c an be used with this unit.

- 26 - Prepar ation ∫ About the displ ay of the numb er of recordable pictures an d available recording t ime • Switch the dis play (number of rec o rdable pi c tures , available re c ording time , etc.) by pressing [DIS P .]. (P62) • The number of rec ordable picture s and the available record ing time are an approximation.
- 27 - Prepar ation ∫ A vail able recording time (when recording motion pictures) • “h” is an abbreviat ion for hour , “m” for minute and “s” for second. • [A VCHD] • [MP4] • The recordabl e time is the tot al time of all the motion pic tures which hav e been recor ded.
- 28 - Prepar ation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the camera is shippe d. 1 Press came ra [ON/OFF] button . • If the lang uage select screen is not displayed, proceed to [Require ments for Underwater use] below . 2 Press [MENU/SET].

- 30 - Prepar ation Tip s for t aking g ood pictures Hold the camera gently with both hands, keep your arms still at your side and st and with your feet sli ghtly ap art. • T o prevent droppin g, be sure to attach the supplied strap and fit i t to your wrist.
- 31 - Basic Selecting the Recording Mode ∫ List of Recording M odes • When the mode has been switched from Playback Mode to Recording Mo de, the prev iously set Recording Mode will b e set. 1 Press [MO DE]. 2 Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to selec t the Recording Mode .
- 32 - Basic T aking Pictures using the Automa tic Function (Intelligent Auto Mode) Recording Mode: The camera will set the most app ropriate settings to m atch the subject and the recording conditions so we recommend this m ode for beginners or those who want to leave the s ettings to the camera and take pictures easily .
- 33 - Basic When the camera identifies the optimum s cene, the icon of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 se conds, after which its colour c hanges to the usual red. When takin g pictures When re cordin g motion pi ctures • [ ¦ ] is set if none of the sce nes are applicab le, and the stand ard settings are set.
- 34 - Basic Following menus can be set. • For the setting method of the menu, refe r to P48 . ¢ Settings may be dif ferent f rom other Recor ding Modes. ∫ [Burst] (P11 1) [ ] can be set in [Burst]. I n this setting, t he burst speed is automatically adjusted based on the movement of the subject.
- 35 - Basic ∫ [iHDR] When [iHDR] is set to [ON] and the re is, for example, strong contrast between the background and the subject, multiple still pi c tures are re corded with dif fering exposures and combined to create a single still picture rich in gradation.
- 36 - Basic T aking Pictures with Y ou r Favourite Settings (Programm e AE Mode) Recording Mode: The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various set tings in the [Rec] m enu.
- 37 - Basic Focusing Aim the AF area at the subject, and then press the shutter button halfway . • The AF area may be disp layed larger for cert ain zoom magnific ations and in dark places. ∫ About focus range The focus range is displayed when operating the zoom.
- 38 - Basic ∫ When the su bject is not in focus (such as when it is n ot in the centre of the composition of the picture you want to take) 1 Aim the AF area at the subject, and press the shutter button halfway to fix the focus and exposure. 2 Press and hold the shutter button halfway while moving the camera as you compo se the pict ure.
- 39 - Basic Recording Motion Pictures Appl ica ble m odes : This can reco rd full high definition motion pictures com patible with the A VC HD format or motion pictures record ed in MP4. Audio will be recorded in stereo. 1 St art recording by pressing the motion picture button.
- 40 - Basic • When a mot ion picture is recorded in a high tempe rature environ ment or is recorded continuously , the record ing may stop after [ ] is displayed t o protect this unit. • The available re c ordin g time display ed on the screen may not de crease regularl y .
- 41 - Basic • If you end moti on pictu re recording after a sh ort time whe n using [Miniature Ef fect] of the Creativ e Control Mode, the camera may go on record ing fo r a certain period. Ple ase continue to hold the camera unti l the recording f inis hes.

- 46 - Basic Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictu res cannot be recovered. • Pictures on t he built- in memory or the card t hat are being played back will be dele ted. • Pictures th at are not in the DCF st andard or thos e that are prot ected cannot be de leted.
- 47 - Basic • Picture group s are treated as a single pictu re. (All the pictures in the select ed picture group will be del eted.) (P4 4) • Do not turn the came ra off while deletin g. Use a batt ery with suf ficient battery power or the AC adaptor (opt ional).
- 48 - Basic Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you t o choose the settings for taking pictures and playing them back jus t as you like and menus that enable y ou to have more fun with the camera and us e it more easily .

- 53 - Basic • When you conn ect the camera to a TV , the volu me of the TV speakers does not change. Also, when connected , no sound is output from the camera spe akers. • Some subjec ts may appe ar differently from actu ality on the LCD monitor .
- 54 - Basic • The brightnes s of the pictures displayed on the LCD monitor is increa s ed so some subjects may appear dif ferent from real l ife on the LCD monitor .
- 55 - Basic • When the recorded picture an d the histogram do not match each other under the following conditions, the histogram is displayed in orange.

- 64 - Recording Using the Zoom Appl ica ble m odes : Y ou can zoom in to make people and object s appear closer or zoom out to record landscapes in wide angle. ∫ Screen display Example of display when Extra Optical Zoom (EZ), Intelligent Z oom and Digital Z oo m are used together .
- 65 - Recording This function works when any of the picture sizes (P96) indicated with is selected. Y ou can zoom in further than you can with t he Opti cal Zoom without deteriorating the image quality . Maximum magnification: 10.5 k (This includes th e optical zoom magnification .
- 66 - Recording T aking Pictures Using the Built-in Flash Appl ica ble m odes : Set the flash to match the recording. 1 Press 1 [ ‰ ]. 2 Press 3 / 4 to s elect the ite m and th en press [MENU/SET]. ¢ 1 This can be set only whe n Inte lligent Auto Mode is set.

- 69 - Recording T aking Close-up Pictures ([AF M acro]/[Macro Zoom]) Appl ica ble m odes : This mode allows you to take close-up pictures of a s ubject, e.g. when taking pictures of flowers. 1 Press 4 [ # ]. 2 Press 3 / 4 to s elect the ite m and then p ress [MENU/SET].

- 71 - Recording Compensating th e Exposure Appl ica ble m odes : Use this function when you cannot achieve appr opriat e exposure d ue to the difference in brightness between the subject and the background. • EV is an abbrevi ation of [ Exposure V alue], a unit indicating the amount of expo sure.
- 72 - Recording T aking Pictures Using Auto Brack et Appl ica ble m odes : In this mode, 3 pic tures are automatically r ecorded in the selected exposure compensation range each time the shutter button is pressed. - 73 - Recording T aking picture b y setting the expo sure manually (Ma nual Exposu re Mode ) Recording Mode: Determine the expos ure by manually s etti ng the aperture value and the shutter speed. The Manual Exposure Assistance appears on the lower portion of the screen to indicate the exposure.
- 74 - Recording ∫ Manual Exposure Assistance • The Manual Exposure Assist ance is an appr oximation. We recommend c hecki ng the pictures o n the playback sc reen. • The brightnes s of the LCD monitor an d the recorde d pictures may dif fer . Check the picture s on the playback sc reen.
- 75 - Recording T aking Pictures with different ima ge effect s (Creative Control Mode) Recording Mode: This mode records with additional image ef fects. Y ou can set the effects to add by selecting example images a nd checking them on the screen. 1 Press [MO DE].
- 76 - Recording ¢ These pic tures are e xamples t o show the e ffect. This effect emphasizes the color t o make a pop art picture. This effect gives a faded image. This effect adds a bright, airy and soft feel to the overall im age. This effect adds a dark and relaxing feel t o the over all i m age and enhances bright parts.
- 77 - Recording This ef fect creat es a sepia image. This effect gi ves a higher contrast to create an impressive black and white picture. This effect gi ves your photo a dramatic contrast look. This effect produces the optimum brightness for b oth dark and b right part s.
- 78 - Recording This effect gi ves your photo a dramatic color look. This effect reduces peripheral brightness to give th e impression of a t oy camera.
- 79 - Recording This effect blurs the overall image t o produce a s oft feel. This effect transforms pin-points of light into a star effect. This effect l eaves one selected color to emphasize impressiveness . [Sof t Focus] • Display of the recording scre en will be delayed more than usual and the screen will look as if frames are drop ping.
- 80 - Recording T ake the Outdoors Scene Expres sively Recording Mode: By setting the Recording Mode to [ ], [ ], [ ] or [ ] pictures can be taken more effectively matching the conditions such as sports, snow , beach & snorkeling. • T one of the colour of th e image may c hange when pict ure is ta ken with unmat ched usage.
- 81 - Recording This is optimal f or taking pictures underwat er and at the beac h. Depth meter will automat ically operate. It can be a rough indica tion of how deep you have gone underwater . Y ou can use [Color Reproduction] (P1 15) in the [Rec] menu and take pictures underwater without losing the red tinge.
- 82 - Recording ∫ About the white balance Y ou can adjust the hue to your pref erred setting using [WB A djust.] (P101) . ∫ T o beautif ully r ecord the un derwater red tinge (Unde rwater colou r reproducti on) Subjects appear blue in pictures taken underwate r .
- 83 - Recording This is optimal f or taking pictures underwat e r deeper than 13 m (43 feet) by t h e use of the marine case (DMW-MCFT5: optional). Y ou can use [Color Reproduction] (P1 15) in the [Rec] menu and take pictures underwater without losing t he red tinge.
- 84 - Recording T aking panorama pictures (Panorama Shot Mo de) Recording Mode: Pictures are recorded continuously while moving the camera horizontally or vertically , and are combined to m ake a single panorama p icture. 1 Press [MO DE]. 2 Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to selec t [Panorama Shot], and the n press [MENU/SET].
- 85 - Recording 7 Press th e shutter b utton fully an d record a picture while mo ving the camera in a small circle in the direction selected in Step 3 . 8 Press th e shutter b utton once ag ain to end the sti ll picture r ecordi ng. • Recording can also be ended b y keeping the camera still while recordi ng.
- 86 - Recording • The zoom posit ion is fixe d to Wide. • [S tabilizer] is fixed to [OFF]. • The focus , white balanc e, and exposu re are fixed at the opti mum values for th e first pictu re.
- 87 - Recording T aking pictures that match the sc ene being recorded (Scene Mode) Recording Mode: When you se lect a Scene Mod e to match t he subject and recording situation, the camera sets the optimal exposure and hue to obtain the desired pi cture.
- 88 - Recording When taking pictures of people outdoors during t he day , this mode allows you to improve the appearance of the persons and mak e their skin tones look healthier . ∫ T echnique for Portrait Mode T o mak e this mode more ef f ective: 1 Press and hold down the zoom button as far as possible to T ele.
- 89 - Recording This allows you to take pictures of a per son and the background with near real-life brightness. ∫ T echnique for Night Portrait Mode • Use the flash. ( Y ou can set to [ ‹ ].) • Ask the subj ect not to move while ta king a picture.
- 90 - Recording Y ou can combine several pictures with different levels of exposure into a single picture with ri ch gradation. Y ou can minimise the loss of gradati ons in bright areas a nd dark areas w hen, for example, the contrast between the background and the s ubject is large.
- 91 - Recording This takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When you use the flash, the light from it is weaker than usual. It is possible to set di fferent birthdays and names for [Baby1] and [Baby2]. Y ou can select to have these appear at the time of playback, or have them stamped on the recorded image using [T ext S tamp] (P160) .
- 92 - Recording Select this when you want to t ak e pictures of a sunset view . This allows you to take vivid pictures of the red colour of the sun. This mode minimises the jitter of the subjects, and enables you to take pictures of these subjects in dimly lit rooms.
- 93 - Recording Pictures are recorded continuously while moving the camera horizontally , and two pictures selected automatically are combined to make a single 3D picture. T o view 3D pictures, a television that supp ort s 3D is r equired. (This unit w ill play back in 2D) Refer to P217 for det a ils about the playback method.
- 94 - Recording Entering T ext It is possible to ent er babies’ and pets’ names and the locations when recording. When a sc reen that looks like the one on t he right is displayed, you can enter characters. (Only al phabetical characters and symbols can be entered.
- 95 - Recording Using the [Rec] Menu For det ails o n [Rec] menu settings, r e fer to P48 . Appl ica ble m odes : This allows you to select th e aspect ratio of t he pictures to suit printing or the playback met hod. • The ends of th e record ed pictures may be cut at prin ting so check before pr inting.
