- 9 - Preparation Preparation Charging the Battery Use the dedicated AC adaptor (supplied), USB connection cable (supplied) and batt ery . • The battery is not c harged when the ca mera is shipped. Charge the battery before use. • Charge t h e batter y only when it is inserte d in th e ca mera.

- 15 - Preparation Inserting and Removin g the Card (optiona l) • Check that t his unit is turned of f. • We rec ommend using a Panaso nic card. Slide t he releas e lever in the direction of the arrow and open the card/battery door .
Preparation - 16 - About the Built-in Memory /the Card • Y ou can copy the recor ded picture s to a card. (P96) • Memory size: Approx. 70 MB • The access time for the built -in memory may be l onger than th e access time for a card. The following cards, which conform to the SD video standard, can be used with this unit.

Preparation - 18 - ∫ About the display of the numb er of recordable pictures and available recording time ∫ Number of recordable pictures • [ i 9999 9] is displayed if there are more than 100, 000 pictures remaining.
- 19 - Preparation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the camera is shi pped. Slide t he REC/PLA Y sw itch to [ ! ] and then tu rn the camera on. • If the langua ge select screen is not di splayed, proceed t o step 4 . Press [MENU/SET] .
Preparation - 20 - Select [Clock Set] i n the [ Rec] or [Setu p] men u, and press [MENU/SET ]. ( P37) • The clock can be reset as show n in steps 5 and 6 . • The clock setting is maint aine d for 3 months using the built-in clock battery even without the battery .
- 21 - Preparation Tip s for t aking good pictures Hold the camera gently with both hands, keep yo ur arms still at your side and st and with your fee t slightly ap art. • T o prevent dropping, be sure to attach t he supplied strap and fit it to your wrist.
Basic - 22 - Basic Selecting the Recordin g Mode ∫ List of Recording M odes Note • When the mode has been switched fr om Playback Mode to Recor ding Mode, t he previously set Recording Mod e will be s et. Slide t he REC/PLA Y sw itch to [ ! ]. Press [MODE].
- 23 - Basic Recording Mode: T aking pictures using the autom atic function (Intelligent Auto Mode) The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the subject and the recording conditions so we recom mend this m ode for beginners or those who want to leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .
Basic - 24 - When the camera identifies the optimum scene, the i con of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 seconds, after which its color c hanges to the usual red. Basic - 26 - Recording Mode: T aking pictures with your favor ite settings (Normal Picture M ode) The camera automatically sets the shutt er speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various settings in the [Rec] menu.
- 27 - Basic Focusing Aim the AF area a t the subj ect, and then press the s hutter button halfway . • The AF area may be d isplayed la rger for cert ain zoom magnif ications and in dark places. ∫ About f ocus range The focus range is displayed when operating the zoom.
Basic - 28 - ∫ When the subject is not in focus (such as when it is not in the center of the composition of the picture you want to take) 1 Aim the AF area at the su bject, and press the shutter b utton h alf way to fix the focus and exposure. 2 Press and hold the shutter button half way while movin g the camera as you compose the picture.

Basic - 34 - Playing Back Motion P ictures This unit was designed to play motion pictures using the MP 4 and QuickT ime Motion JPEG form ats. Press 2 / 1 to select a picture with a Motion Picture icon (such as [ ]), and then press 3 to play ba ck.
- 35 - Basic Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • Pictures on the built-in memor y or the card that are being play ed back will be delete d . • Picture s that are not in th e DC F sta ndard or those that ar e protected cannot be deleted.
Basic - 36 - Note • Do not turn th e camera of f while deletin g. Use a battery with suff icient batt ery power . • Depending on th e number of pictures to be deleted, it may take s ome time to delet e them. T o delete multiple pi ctures (up to 50) or all th e pictures Press [ ].
- 37 - Basic Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you to choose the settings for taking pict ures and playing them back just as you like and menus that enable you to have more fun with the camera and use it more easil y .

Basic - 40 - • The numb er of d ays that hav e pas sed s ince t he de parture date can b e printed out using the “ PHOT OfunSTUDIO ” bu ndled soft ware on the CD-ROM (sup plied). • The tra vel date is calculat ed using the date in the c lock se tting and the de parture date yo u set.

Basic - 44 - • Refer to P32 for informatio n about how to play back pictur es. • When you pla y back pic tures on a PC, they canno t be displa yed in the rotate d directio n unless the OS or software is comp atible with Exif. Exif is a file format for still pictures which allows recording informati on etc.
- 45 - Basic • The S tabiliz er functio n is switched be tween [On] and [Of f] every time [MENU/SET] is pr essed during the [S tabilizer Demo.]. • In Playback Mode, [ S tabilizer Demo.] canno t be displayed. • [S tabilizer Demo.] is an approximation.
Recording - 46 - Recording About the LCD Monitor Press [DISP .] to c hange. A LCD monitor • When the men u screen appears , the [DI SP .] button is n ot activate d. During Pl ayback Zoom, while p laying b ack motion pi ctures and duri ng a slide show , you can only select “ Normal display H ” or “ No display J ” .
- 47 - Recording Applicable modes: Using the Zoom Y ou can zoom in to make people and objects appear closer or zoom out to record landscapes in wide angle. Setting the number of pixels to 10M or less will operate the Extended O ptical Zoom to take zoomed pictures wit hout affecting quality .
Recording - 48 - ∫ Screen display • When using the Z oom fu nction, an estimate of the focus range w ill appear in conjunction with the zoom displ ay bar . [Example: 0.5 m (1.6 ft.) – ¶ ] Note • The indic ated zoom magn ificatio n is an approxi mation.
- 49 - Recording Applicable modes: T aking Pictures Using the Built-in Flash Set the flash to match the recording. Press 1 [ ‰ ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct the item and then p ress [MENU/SET]. ¢ 1 This can be set only when Intellige nt Auto Mode is set.
Recording - 50 - ∫ A vailable Flash S ettings in R ecordi ng Mode The available flash settings depend on the Recording Mode. ( ± : Available, —: Not available, ¥ : Scene Mode initial setting) ¢ [ ] is displayed. • The flash se tting may chan ge if the Recording Mode is cha nged.

Recording - 52 - Applicable modes: T aking Close-up Pictur es ([AF Macro]/[M acro Zoom] ) This mode allows you to take c lose-up pictures of a s ubject, e.g. when taking pictures of flowers. Press 4 [ # ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct the item and then p ress [MENU/S ET].
- 53 - Recording Applicable modes: T aking Pictures with th e Self-timer Press 2 [ ë ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct the item and then p ress [MENU/S ET]. Note • When you pres s the shutt er button on c e fully , the subject is automatically focus ed just before recording.
Recording - 54 - Applicable modes: Compensating the Exposure Use this function when you c annot achieve appropriate expos ure due to the difference in brightness between the subject and the background. Look at t he following examples. Note • EV is an abbrevia tion of [Exposure V alue], a unit i ndicating the amount of exposure.
- 55 - Recording Recording Mode: Record pictures that lo ok like dioramas (Miniature Effect Mode) By creating areas that are blurred and areas that are not, the picture will look like that of a miniature model. Motion pict ures can also be recorded wit h diorama effects that appear to be played back in fast forward.
Recording - 56 - Recording Mode: T aking pictures that match the s cene being recorded (Scene Mode) When you select a Scene Mode to match t he subject and r ecording situation, the cam era sets the optimal exposure and hue to obtai n the desired picture.
- 57 - Recording When taking pictures o f people outdoors during the daytime, this m ode allows you t o improve the appe arance and make their skin t ones look healthier . ∫ T echnique for Por trait Mo de T o make t his mode mo re effective: 1 Rotate the zoom lever as far as possible to T ele.
Recording - 58 - Pictures are recorded continuous ly while moving the camera horizontally or vertically , and are combined to make a single panorama picture. 1 Press 3 / 4 to se lect the record ing direction and then press [MENU/SET]. 2 Af ter confirming the recording direction, press [MENU/SET ].
- 59 - Recording Note • The zoom posit ion is fixe d to Wide. • The focu s, w hit e bal anc e, an d e xpos ure are f ixe d at the opti mum val ues for the fi rst pict ure . As a result, if t he focus or brightness changes subs tant ially during recordi ng, the enti re panora m a picture may not be recorded at the suit able focus or brightn ess.
Recording - 60 - Setting for when you want to take pi c tures of sports scenes or other fast-moving events. Note • Shut ter s pee d may slow do wn for up to 1 seco nd. • This mode is suit able for t aking pict ures of subjec ts at dis tance s of 5 m (16 feet) or more.
- 61 - Recording This takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When you use the flash, the light from it is weaker t han usual. It is possible to set different birthdays and names for [Baby1] and [Baby2].
Recording - 62 - Select this when you want to t ak e pictures of a pet such as a dog or a cat. Y ou can set your pet’s birthday and name. For information about [Age] or [Name], refer to [ Baby1]/[Baby2] on P61 . Select this when y ou want to take pictures of a sunset view .
- 63 - Recording Recording Entering T ext It is possible to enter babies’ and pets’ names and the nam es of travel des tinations when recording. (Only alphabet ical characters and sym bols can be ent ered.) Displa y the ent ry screen. • Y ou can display th e entry scree n via the foll owing operations.
Recording - 64 - Using the [Rec] Menu For details on [Rec] m enu settings, refer to P37 . Applicable modes: Set the number of pixels. The higher the n u mbers of pixels, the finer t he detail of the pictures will appear even when they are printed ont o large sheets.
- 65 - Recording Applicable modes: This allows the Sensitivity to light (ISO sensit ivity) to be set. Setting to a higher figure enables pictures to be taken even in dark plac es without the re sulting pictures coming out dark.
Recording - 66 - Applicable modes: In sunlight, under incandescent lights or in ot her such conditions where the color of white takes on a reddish or bluish tinge, this item adjusts to the color of whit e which is closest to what is seen by the eye i n ac cordance with the light source.
- 67 - Recording ∫ Auto White Balance Depending on the conditions prevailing when pictures are taken, the pictures may take on a reddish or bluish tinge. Furthermor e, when a m ultiple number of light s ources are being used or there is nothing with a color close t o white, Auto Wh ite Balance m ay not function properly .
Recording - 68 - Applicable modes: This allows the focusing method that suit s the positions and number of the subjects to be selected. ¢ [ Ø ] will be used during motion pict ure recordin g. Note • The fo cus se tting is fixe d to [ Ø ] in Miniatur e Effect Mode.
- 69 - Recording ∫ Setting up [ ] ([AF T racking]) Align the subject with the AF tracking frame, and then press 4 to lock onto the subject. A AF t rack ing fra me • AF area will be display ed in yellow when a subject is recogn ized, and focus will automat ically adjust continuously follo wi ng the subject’ s moveme nt (Dyn amic tra cking).
Recording - 70 - Applicable modes: Contrast and expos ure will be adjusted autom atically when there is a big difference in brightness between the background and subject, to bring the i mage close to real life. Setti ngs: [ON ]/[OFF] Note • [ ] in the screen t u rns yellow when [i.

Recording - 72 - Note • Burst Mode is not cancele d when the camera is switched of f. • If you take pictur es in Burst Mode with the built-in memory , it will take time to write the picture data. • The settin g is fixed t o [OFF] in [Panor ama Shot] and [Photo F rame] in Scene Mode.
- 73 - Recording Applicable modes: Sets various color ef fects, including making the picture sharper , brighter , or applying a sepia tone. ¢ 1 This can be set only when Intellige nt Auto Mode is set. ¢ 2 This can be set only during Normal Picture Mode.
Recording - 74 - Applicable modes: AF assist lamp will illuminat e the subject when the shutter button is pressed halfway , making it easier for the camera to focus when recording in l o w light conditions. (Larger AF area is displayed depending on the recording conditi ons.
- 75 - Recording Applicable modes: Using one of these modes, jitt er during picture taking is detected, and the camera automatically compensates the jitter , enabling jitter-free images to be taken. Setti ngs: [ON ]/[OFF] Note • S tabilizer is fixed to [O FF] in [Panor ama Shot] in Sc ene Mode.
Recording - 76 - Using the [Motion Pictur e] Menu For det ails on [Moti on P ictur e] menu set tings, refer to P37 . In [Panorama Shot] in Scene Mode, the [Moti on Picture] menu will not be displayed. Applicable modes: This sets up the picture quality of motion pictures.
- 77 - Playback/Editing Playback/Editing V arious meth ods of playback Y ou can play back the recorded pictures in various methods. Slide t he REC/PLA Y sw itch to [ ( ], and then pr ess [MODE]. Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select item, and th en press [MENU/SET].
Playback/Editing - 78 - Y ou can p lay back the pictures you have taken in syn chronization with music, and you can do this in sequence while l eaving a fixed interval between each of the pictures.
- 79 - Playback/Editing ∫ Changing the slide sh ow settings Y ou can change the settings for Slide Show Playback by selecting [Effect] or [Setup] on the slide s how menu screen. [Effect] This allows you to select the screen ef f ects or music effects when switching from one picture to the ne xt.
Playback/Editing - 80 - The images s orted into the cat egory or images set as favorite are play ed back. ∫ About the categories to be sorted It will be sorted as following when [Category Selection] is set.
- 81 - Playback/Editing Y ou can display pictures by recording da te. Note • The recor ding date of the pic ture s elected in the playbac k scre en becomes the date selected when the calendar screen is firs t displayed. • If the re are multipl e pictur es with the same recording date , the first pictur e recorded on t hat day is displayed.
Playback/Editing - 82 - Playback/Editing Having Fun with Record ed Pictures The brightness and color of the pictures t aken can be balanced. • With [Aut o Retouch] , a new edited pi cture is cre ated. Check that th ere is free sp ace on the built- in memory or the card.
- 83 - Playback/Editing Apply effects similar to t hat of aesthetics or makeup to brighten up any face. • With [Beaut y Retouc h], a new edite d picture is cre ated. Check that there is free space on the built- in memory or the card. [Beauty Retouch] ca nnot be used if the card’ s Write-Prot ect switch i s set to [LOCK ].
Playback/Editing - 84 - After fi ni shi ng t he pi ctu re edit in g, p re ss [M ENU /SE T]. • Confirmati on screen is displayed. Selecting [Y es] disp lays images before applicatio n and aft er application . Press [MENU/SET] . • Confirmati on screen is displayed.
- 85 - Playback/Editing Using the [Playback] M enu Y ou can set up pictures to be uploaded to image sharing sites and perform ac tions like cropping recorded pictures, as well as set up the protection of recorded images, etc. • With [T ext S tamp ], [Resiz e] or [ Cropping], a new edited pic ture is c reated.
Playback/Editing - 86 - ∫ Upload to the image sharing sites An upload tool built into the camera, “LU MIX Image Uploader, ” is automat ically copied to the card when you set up [Upload Set]. Perform the upload operation after connecting the camera to a PC (P102) .
- 87 - Playback/Editing Y ou can stamp the recording date/time, name, location or travel date onto the recorded pictures. Select [T ext S tamp] o n the [Playbac k] menu. (P37) Press 3 / 4 to sele ct [SINGLE] or [MUL TI] and then press [MENU/SET]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct [Set], and then press [MENU/SET].
Playback/Editing - 88 - Press [ ]. Press 3 to selec t [OK], and then press [MENU/SET]. • Confirmati on screen is displayed. It is executed when [Y es] is selected.
- 89 - Playback/Editing Recorded motion picture can be divid e d in two. It is recommended for when you want to div ide a part you need with a p art you do not need. It cannot be resto red once d ivided. Note • [Vide o Div ide] may no t be performed on motion pict ures recor ded with other eq uipment.
Playback/Editing - 90 - T o allow easy posting to web pages, attachment to email etc., picture size (number of pixels) is reduced. Select [R esize] on t he [Playback] me nu. (P37) Press 3 / 4 to sele ct [SINGLE] or [MUL TI] and then press [MENU/SET]. Note • Y ou can set up to 50 p ictures at one time in [ MUL TI].
- 91 - Playback/Editing Y ou can enlarge and then clip the import ant part of t he recorded picture. Select [Croppi ng] on the [Playback] m enu. (P37 ) Press 2 / 1 to sele ct the picture, and then pres s [MENU/SET]. Use the zoom lever and press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select the p arts to be croppe d.
Playback/Editing - 92 - Y ou can do the following if a mark has been added to pictures and they have been set as favo rite s. • Play back onl y the pictures s e t as favo ri tes. ([Favo rite ] in [Filte ring Play]) • Play back th e pictures set as fa vorites o nly as a Slide Show .
- 93 - Playback/Editing DPOF “Digital P rint Order Format” is a system t hat allows the user to select which pictures to print, how many copies of each picture to print and whether or not to print the recording date on the pictures when using a DPOF compatibl e photo printer or photo printing store.
