Online tips an ticipate questions you might have in a dialog box, pr ovide shortcuts for using th e dialog box, or give you other useful information.

Using the navigator When you work with most applications, th e navigator on the front panel of your handheld makes it easy for you to naviga te among and select your entries.

23 CHAPTER 3 Entering Data on Y our Handheld This chapter explains seve ral ways to enter data on your handheld, and it covers the following topics: ■ Using the onscreen keyboar d ■ Using Graffiti.

When a keyboard is open, you can tap the ab c, 123, or Int’l boxes to open any of the other keyboards, including the international keyboard. After you finish, tap Done to close the onscr een keyboard and place the text in the re cord.
Using Graffiti 2 wr iting to enter data 25 ■ The heavy dot on each s hape shows where to begin th e stroke. Certain characters have similar shapes but dif ferent beginning and end points. Always begin the stroke at the he avy dot. (Y ou sh ould not create the heavy dot; it is there only to show you where to begin the stroke.

When you lift the sty lus from the scr een, your handheld r ecognizes your stroke and pr ints the lett er at the insertion point on the screen.

Chapter 3 Enteri ng Data on Y our Handheld 30 Accented characters When writing letters with accent marks, first w rite the letter stro ke on the left side (or aligned with the division marks for uppe rcase letters) of the Graffiti 2 writing area. Then quickly write the accent stroke on the right side of the Graf fiti 2 writing area.
Using Graffiti 2 wr iting to enter data 31 When Punctuation Shift is active, an up arr ow symbol appears in the lower - right corner of the handheld s creen. If you accidentally activate Punctuation Shift, another Punctuation Sh ift str oke will cancel it.

T o use gestures, draw the following strokes on the left (letter) side of the Graf fiti 2 writing area: Graffiti 2 ShortCuts Graffiti 2 Short Cuts make entering comm only used words or phrases quick and easy .

Beaming data 35 4. When the Beam Status dialog box appe ars, point the IR port dir ectly at the IR port of the r eceiving devic e. For best results, Palm handhelds should be between 10 centimeters (approximately 4 inche s) and 1 meter (appr oximat ely 39 inches ) apart, and the path between the two handhelds must be clear of obstacles.

Using File Link The File Link feature enables you to import Address Book and Memo Pad information, such as a company phone list, to your handheld fr om a separate external file on your W indows computer .

41 CHAPTER 4 W orking with Applications This chapter explains how to open and switch between applications on your handheld, how to cha nge application settin gs so they are personalized to your work methods, and how to categorize app lications so you view them in related groups.
Chapter 4 W orking wi th Applications 42 T o open an application on your handheld: 1. T ap the Home icon . 2. T ap the icon of the application that you want to open. If you have many applications installed on your handheld , tap the scroll bar to see all your applications.

Switching between applications When working with any application, se lect the Home icon or press an application button on your handheld to switch to another application.

Y ou can assign an application to a category and then display a single category or all your applications.

Do one of the following: – T ap the Home icon repe atedly to cycle through all your categories. – T ap the pick list in the upper- right corner of the screen, and select the category you want to display .

Using menus 49 Choosing a menu The menus and menu commands that a re av ailable depend on the application that is currently open. Also, the menus an d menu commands vary depending on which part of the application you’r e currently us ing. For example, in Memo Pad, the menus ar e differ ent for the Memo list screen and the Memo recor d screen.
Chapter 4 W orking wi th Applications 50 The Command toolbar displays context-se nsitive menu comman ds for the active scree n. For example, if text is selected , the menu icons displayed may be Undo, Cut, Copy , and Paste.

In Date Book only: Se lect start and end times for yo ur appointment, and tap OK. 4. Enter text for the r ecord. 5. (Optional) T ap Details to select attribut es for the recor d.

In Palm W eb Browser Pr o, the delete command is available fr om the V iew Saved Pages dialog box.

P erfor ming common tasks 55 Categorizing records Y ou can categori ze recor ds in the Addr ess Bo ok, T o Do List, Note Pad, V oice Memo, Memo Pad, and Expense applicatio ns so that they are gr ouped logically into categories and a re easy to review .

TIP Y ou can group the records w ithin two or more categories into one category by giving the categories the same name.

A note can be up to seve ral thousand characters long. For example, for an appointment in Date Book, you can attach a note with directions to the location.

If a No symbol appears when you attempt to drag a file onto a file list, that file is not supported on that destination. The status bar shows the number of files sele cted and their total size.

77 CHAPTER 5 Using Address Book Addres s Book enables you to keep names, addr esses, phone numbers, and other information about your personal or business contacts. Use Addr ess Book to do the following: ■ Quickly look up or enter names, ad dresse s, phone numbers, and other information.

91 CHAPTER 7 Using Card Info Card Info enables you to r eview ge neral information about an expansion card. Use Car d Info to do the following: ■ Review card contents. ■ Rename a card. ■ Format a card. Revie wing Card Information Y ou can view the car d name, type, availa ble storage space, and a summ ary of its contents.
