3 Precautions 1. Recording Copyright —Unless it’ s for personal use only , recording copyrighted material is illegal with- out the permission of the copyright holder . 2. A C Fuse —The AC fuse inside the unit is not user - serviceable. If you cannot turn on the unit, contact your Onkyo dealer .

B ST ANDBY indicator (30) This indicator lights up when the A V receiver is in Standby mode, and it flashes while a signal is being receiv ed from the remote controller .

Indi- cator B lights up when speaker set B is on. 2 MUTING indicator (38) This indicator flashes when the A V receiver is muted.
8 Front & Rear P anels —Continued A DIGIT AL IN OPTICAL & CO AXIAL These optical and coaxial jacks can be used to con- nect a CD or D VD player and other components with digital audio outputs. B AM ANTENNA These push terminals are for connecting an AM antenna.
9 Bef ore Using the A V receiver Notes: • The batteries should last for about six months, although this will vary with usage. • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries or dif ferent types of batteries.
10 Remote Contr oller Including the A V receiver, the remote controller can be used to control up to six different components. The remote controller has a specific operating mode for use with each type of component. Modes are selected by using the five REMO TE MODE buttons.

A ST ANDBY b utton This button sets the CD player or MD/CD recorder to Standby . B ON button This button is used to set the CD player or MD/CD recorder to On or Standby .
14 Remote Controller —Continued T APE mode is used to control an Onkyo cassette recorder connected to the A V receiver via . To set the remote contr oller to T APE mode, press the [RECEIVER] REMO TE MODE button. For twin cassette decks, only deck B can be controlled.
15 Connecting Y our Speakers Y ou can use two sets of speakers with the A V receiv er: speaker set A and speaker set B. Speaker set A should be installed in your main listening room and can be used with Dolby Digital and DTS surround material.
16 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued F or the best surround-sound e xperience, you should con- nect six speakers and a po wered subwoofer . The following table sho ws which channels you should use based on the number of speakers that you ha ve.
17 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued Note: When speaker set B is turned on, speaker set A is reduced to 2.1-channel playback. Using a suitable cable, connect the A V receiver’ s SUB- WOOFER PRE OUT to an input on your po wered sub- woofer , as shown.
18 Connecting Antenna This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connect commercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiver w on’t pick up an y radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
19 Connecting Antenna —Continued If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.
20 Connecting Y our Components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve completed and double-checked all A V connections.
21 Connecting Y our Components —Continued By connecting both the audio and video outputs of your D VD player and other A V components to the A V receiver, you can select both the audio and video simultaneously simply by selecting the appropriate input source on the A V receiver.

31 Fir st Time Setup To enjoy Dolby Digital and DTS, you must connect your D VD player to the A V receiver by using a digital audio connection (coaxial or optical).
32 First Time Setup —Continued This section explains ho w to specify which speakers are connected and their sizes. For speakers with a cone diameter larger than 6-1/2 inches (16 cm), specify Large . For those with a smaller diameter , specify Small .

35 Playing Y our A V Components —Continued The multichannel input is for connecting a component with individual 5.1-channel analog audio output jacks, such as a D VD player or MPEG decoder .
36 Using the T uner W ith the built-in tuner , you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your favorite stations as presets for quick selection. AM Frequency Step Setup Here you can specify the AM frequency step used in your area. When this setting is changed, all radio presets are deleted.

38 Common Functions This chapter explains functions that can be used with an y input source. W ith this function, you can adjust the brightness of the display . Y ou can adjust the bass or treble for the front speakers except when the Direct listening mode is selected.
39 Common Functions —Continued W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiver so that it automatically turns off after a set period. To cancel the sleep timer , press the [SLEEP] button repeatedly until the SLEEP indicator disappears. To check the remaining sleep time, press the [SLEEP] b utton.

42 Using the Listening Modes —Continued About the Listening Modes W ith its built-in surround-sound decoders and DSP pro- grams, the A V receiver can transform your home listen- ing room into a movie theater or concert hall. Direct The selected input source is output directly with minimal processing for a pure sound.
43 Using the Listening Modes —Continued DTS-ES Matrix This is DTS with an added surround back channel for 6.1 surround sound. Use it to provide 6.1 channel surround playback with program material recorded in DTS 5.1 format. Since DTS 5.1 program material contains surround back channel informa- tion, all channels can be reconstructed for 6.
44 Adjusting the Listening Modes W ith the Late Night function, you can reduce the dynamic range of Dolby Digital material so that you can still hear quiet parts ev en when listening at low v olume lev els—ideal for watching movies late at night when you don’t w ant to disturb anyone.
45 Adjusting the Listening Modes —Continued The Audio Adjust functions are explained belo w . Input Channel Settings ■ Multiplex This setting determines which channel is output from a stereo multiplex source. Use it to select audio channels or languages with multiplex sources, multilingual TV broadcasts, and so on.
46 Recor ding This chapter explains ho w to record the selected input source to an A V component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from tw o different sources. Y ou can record only to A V components that are con- nected to the T APE OUT or VIDEO 1 OUT jacks.
47 Ad v anced Setup Crosso ver Frequency To get the best bass performance from your speaker sys- tem, you need to set the crossov er frequency according to the size and frequency response of your subwoofer and other speakers (front, center , and surround).
48 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Distance To get the best from surround sound, it’ s important that the sound from each speaker reaches the listener at the same time. T o achieve this, you need to specify the dis- tance from each speaker to the listening position.
49 Adv anced Setup —Continued Note: •A quicker way to adjust the speak er lev els is to press the remote controller’ s [TEST TONE] b utton to output the test tone, use the [LEVEL–] and [LEVEL+] but- tons to adjust the lev els, and use the [CH SEL] button to select the speakers.
50 Tr oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the A V receiv er, look for a solution in this section. If you can’t resolv e the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer . Can’t turn on the A V receiver? • Make sure that the po wer cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet.
