41 Fir st Time Setup This section explains the settings that you need to mak e be fore using the A V receiver/ A V amplifier for the very f irst time. Carry out the settings for th e A V recei ver/ A V amplifier by using the Onscreen Setup Menu. The settings of the A V re ceiv er/ A V amplifier can be changed using the Display .
42 First Time Setup —Contin ued HDMI Input Setup If you connect a video component to HDMI IN, you must assign that input to an input selector . F or example, if you connect your D VD player to HDMI IN 1, you must assign HDMI IN 1 to the D VD input selector .
43 First Time Setup —Continued Component Video Setup If you connect to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN, you must assign it to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2, you should assign it to th e D VD input selector .
44 First Time Setup —Contin ued If you connect a component to a digital input jack, you must assign t hat jack to an in put selector . For e xample, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN1 jack, you should assign that jack to the CD input selector .
45 First Time Setup —Continued If the impedance of any speaker is 4 ohms or more but less than 6, set the minimum speaker impedance to 4 ohms. If you’ ve connected your front speak ers to the FRONT L/R and SURR B A CK L/R termin al posts for bi-amping, you must change the “Spe akers T ype” setting.
46 First Time Setup —Contin ued For the on screen setup menus to display properly , you must specify the TV system used in your area. Note: This procedure can also be performed on the A V recei ver/ A V amplifier by using its [SETUP] button, arrow b uttons, and [ENTER] button.
47 First Time Setup —Continued For AM tuning to work properly , you must specify the AM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting is changed, al l radio presets are deleted. 48 First Time Setup —Contin ued If you connect an u -capable Onk yo MiniDisc recorder , CD recorder , or RI Dock to the T APE IN/OUT or GAME/TV IN jacks, for u to work properly , you must change this se tting. This setting can only be changed on the A V receiver/ A V amplifier.
49 First Time Setup —Continued W ith the supplied calibrat ed microphone, Audyssey MultEQ automatically determines the number of speakers connected, their si ze for purposes of bass management, optimum crossover frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), a nd distances fr om the primary list ening position.
50 First Time Setup —Contin ued 1 T urn on the A V receiver/ A V amplifier and the connected TV . On the TV , select the inp ut to which the A V receiv er/ A V amplifier is connec ted. 2 Place the speaker setup micro- phone at measurement point 1 (page 49), and connect it to the SETUP MIC jack.

52 First Time Setup —Contin ued Error Messa ges While the automati c speaker setup is in progre ss, one of the follo wing error messages may appear: ❏ Ambient noise is too high. This message appears if th e background noise is too loud and the measurements cannot be performed properly .

54 Basic Operations This section explains ho w to select the input source (i.e., the A V compone nt that you want to listen to or watch ). Selecting the Input Sour ce 1 Use the A V receiver / A V amplifier’ s input selector buttons to select the input sour ce .
55 Basic Operations —Continued The multichannel D VD input is for connecting a compo- nent with a 7.1-channel analo g audio output, such as a D VD- Audio or SA CD-capable D VD player , or an MPEG decoder .
56 Basic Oper ations —Continued Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er/ A V amplif ier. Tip : Y ou can specify how mu ch the output is muted with the “Muting Le vel” setting (see page 89). W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiver/ A V amplif ier to turn off aut omatically after a specified period.

58 Listening to the Radio (TX-SR706 only) —Continued Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fa vorite AM/FM radio stations as presets. Note: Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identif ication (see page 87). Its name is di splayed instead of the band and frequency .
59 Listening to the R adio (TX-SR706 only) —Continued RDS only works in ar eas where RDS br oadcasts are ava i la b l e . When tuned into an RDS st ation, the RDS indicator appears. ■ What is RDS? RDS stands for Radio Data System and is a method of transmitting data in FM radi o signals.

87 Adv anced Setup —Contin ued A/V Sync When using your D VD player’ s progressive scanning function, you may find that the picture and sound are out of sync. W ith the A/V Sync setting, you can correct this by applying a delay to the a udio signal.
88 Adv anced Setup —Continued Picture Adjust Using Picture Adjust, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noi se appearing on the sc reen and set it to that ad justment. Use the Up and Down [ q ]/[ w ] buttons to select the set- tings, and use the Left and Right [ e ]/[ r ] buttons to set them.

The main menu appears onscreen. If the main menu doesn’t appear , make sure the appropriate external input is selected on your TV .
96 Adv anced Setup —Continued When an input source is selected, the A V recei ver/ A V amplifier checks the rele v ant audio inputs for the pres- ence of an audio signal a nd automatically select s an input. W ith this setting, you can specify which audio inputs the A V recei v er/ A V ampl ifier will check for sig- nals.
