12 En Connections Connecting the AV Controller The A V controller is designed to be us ed with a separate multich annel po wer amplifier . Y ou connect the A V controller’ s PRE OUT jacks to the amplifier’ s inputs, a nd connect your speakers to the amplif ier’ s speakers terminals.
13 En Connecting a P ower Amplif ier via XLR Jac ks Y ou can connect the A V controller to a multichannel power amplif ier via balanced XLR jacks b y using sev eral XLR audio cables.
14 En Speaker Configurat ion The following table indicate s the channels you should use dependin g on the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many spea kers you use, 2 powered subwoofers are recommen ded for a really powerful and solid bass.
15 En Using Powered Subwoofers ■ Connection via RCA Jacks You can connect the powered subwoofers to SW1 PRE OUT and SW2 PRE OUT respectively. The lev el and distance can be se t indi vidually for each output. If you’re using only one s ubwoofer , connect it to SW1 PRE OUT .
16 En Bi-amping the Front Speakers Bi-amping provides improved bass and treble performance. When bi-amping is used, the AV controller is able to drive up to a 7.

18 En Connecting AV componen ts • Before making any AV connections, read the manuals supplied with your AV components. • Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed and double-check ed all AV connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good connect ions (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions).
19 En Note • The AV controller does not suppor t SCART plugs. • The AV controller’s optical digital jacks have shutter-type covers that op en when an optical plug is inserted and close when i t’s removed. Push plugs in all the way. Cautio n • To prevent shutter damage, hol d the optical plug straight wh en inserting and removing.
20 En Note • When listening to an HDMI component through the AV controller, set the HDMI component so that its video can be seen on the TV screen (on the TV, select the input of the HDMI c omponent connecte d to the AV controller).
21 En Connect your components to the appropri ate jacks. The default i nput assignments are show n below. See “Connection Tips and Video Signal Path” for more information ( ➔ page 95 ). ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ page 51 ). Connecting Your Components The on-screen menus appear only on a TV that is connected to the HDMI OUT MA IN .
22 En Note *1 Do not connect the AV controller’s USB port to a USB port on your com puter. Music on your computer can not be played throug h the AV controller in this way. *2 Connect a turntable (MM) that has a built-in phono preamp to TV/CD IN , or conne ct it to PHONO IN with the phono preamp turned off.
23 En With u (Remote Interactive), you can use the following special functions: ■ Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connected via u while the AV controller is on Standby, the AV controller will a utomatically turn o n and select that component as the input source.
24 En This section explains how to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The AV controller won’t pick up any ra dio signals without any an tenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner.
25 En Turning On & Basi c Operations Turning On/Off the AV Controller Tip • For details on power m anageme nt settings, see “Auto Standby” ( ➔ page 68 ). Turning On 1 (European and As ian models) Set % POWER to the ON position ( ^ ) on the front panel.

27 En Note • The buttons you can use will diff er depending on the devices and media used for playback. This section descri bes icons that appear on the display during media playback. This section explains how to play music/video files on the iPod/iPhone.
28 En Extended Mode (Musi c) control The music conten t information is displayed (lists are displayed), and you can control the music content while looking at the screen. Top screen list: Playlists, Artists, Albums, Genres, Songs, Composers, Shuffle Songs, Now Playing.
29 En Listening to Ot her Internet Radio To listen to other interne t radio stations, insert the following step after step 1 in the “ Listening to vTuner Internet Radio” section. Registering My Favorites *1 You can add the currently playing song or station to the “ My Favorites ”.
30 En This section explains how to play mu sic files on a computer or media server through the AV controller (Server Playback). Windows Med ia Player 11 Setup This section explains how to configure Windows Media Player 11 so that the AV controller can play the mus ic files stored on your computer.
31 En Using Remote Playb ack Using the Tuner With the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. You can store your favo rite stations as pr esets for quick selection.
32 En ■ Tuning into stati ons by frequency You can tune into AM and FM stations directly by entering the appropriate frequency. Presetting AM/FM Stations You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite AM/FM radio stations as presets. Note • You can name y our radio p resets for easy i dentification ( ➔ page 60 ).
33 En ■ Displaying Radio Text (RT) ■ Finding Stations by T ype (PTY) You can search for radio stations by type. ■ Listening to Traffic News (TP) You can search for stations that broadcast traffic news. RDS program types (PTY) 1 Press RT/PTY/TP once.
34 En Using Basic Functions With the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey MultEQ ® XT32 automatically d etermines the number of speakers connected, their size for purposes of bass management, op timum crossover frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distanc es from the primary listening position.

40 En Dolby Pro Logic IIx *3 Dolby Pro Logic II Dolby Pro Lo gic IIx expands any 2-channel source for 7 .1-channel playback. It provides a very natural and seamless surrou nd-sound experi ence that fully envelops the listener. As well as music and movies, video games can also benefit from the dramatic spatial effects and vivid imaging.
41 En DTS-ES Discrete *7 This mode is for us e with DTS-ES Discrete soundtracks, which use a discrete surround back chann el for true 6.1/7.1-channel playback. T he seven totally separate audio channels pr ovide better spatial imaging and 360- degree sound localization, perfect for so unds that pan across the surround channels.
42 En THX Founded by George Lucas, THX develops stringent standards that ensure movies are reproduced in movie theat ers and home theaters just as the director intended. THX Modes carefu lly optimize the tonal and spatial characteristics of the soundtrack for repr oduction in the home-theater environment.
43 En Note *1 Pure Audio cannot be selected when Zone 2 is active . Besides, if you activate Zone 2 while Pure Audio is sel ected, the listening mode will automatic ally switch to Direct. *2 Based on the audio channel signal contained in the so urce, the cor responding speak ers will output the sound.
44 En The Home menu provides you qu ick access to frequently used menus without having to go throu gh the long standard menu. This menu enab les you to change settings and view the current information. Note *1 For the PORT input selector, the name of Universal Port Option Dock will be displayed.
45 En You can adjust the brightness of the AV controller’s display. You can display various info rmation about the current input source as follows. (Components connected to the UNIVERSAL PORT jack are excluded.) The following information ca n typically be displayed.
46 En You can temporarily mute the outpu t of the AV controller. By using ACTIVITIES in Easy macro mode, you can sequentially opera te Onkyo components via simple commands from a single-butt on press. These commands are user-definable. See “Using Norm al Macros” ( ➔ page 85 ).
47 En Changing the Source Compone nts You can change the source components activated by the Easy Macro mode. Examples: If you wished to use MY MOVIE to start the playback component assi gned to VCR/DVR of REMOTE MODE , you would press and hold down MY MOV IE for about 3 seconds while pressing down VCR/DVR of REMOTE MODE .
48 En Advanced Operations Advanced Setup The on-screen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a convenient way to change the AV controller’s various settings. Settings are organized into 9 categories on the main menu . Carry out the settings by using the on-screen display.
49 En Main Menu Input/Output Assign Monitor Out On the “ Monitor Out ” settings, you can select whether or not to ha ve the video source s’ images output through the HDMI output.
50 En Tip •T h e “ Resolution ” setting is set respectively of main, sub, and analog. • To view the TV picture while setting, press ENTER . Note • Depending on the incoming vid eo signal, the video playback may not be smooth or the vertical resolution may be lowered.
51 En Component Video Input If you connect a video component to a component video input, you must assign that input to an input selector. For example, if you connect your Blu-ray Disc/DVD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 , you must assign “ IN2 ” to the “ BD/DVD ” input selector.
52 En ■ Subwoofer Input Sensitivity ` 0dB to 15dB in 5 dB steps. Some DVD players output th e LFE channel from their analog subwoofer output at 15 dB higher than normal. With this setting, you can change the AV controller’s subwoofer sensitivity to match your DVD player.
53 En Speaker Con figuration With these settings, you can spec ify which speakers are connected and a crossover fr equency for each speaker . Specify “ Full Band ” for sp eakers that can output low frequency bass sounds adequa tely, for example, speakers with a good sized woofer.
54 En ■ Subw oofer Phase ` 0 º ` 180 º: Mov es the subwoofer phase. Note •I f t h e “ Subw oofer ” setting is set to “ No ”, this setting cannot be selected. ■ Wireless Subw oofer ` Yes : The audio is output from the speakers connected to the wireless unit.
55 En Equalizer Settings With the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of speakers individually with a 7-band equalizer. The vo lume of each speaker can be set. ■ Equalizer ` Manual : You can adjust the equalize r for each speaker manually. Continue with the following procedure: ` Off : Tone off, response flat.
56 En Main menu Audio Adjust With the Audio Adjust functions and settings, you can adjust the sound and listening modes as you like. Multiple x/Mono ■ Multip lex Input Channe l ` Main ` Sub ` Main/Sub This setting determi nes wh ich channel of a stereo multiplex source is output.
57 En ■ Dolby Volum e ` Off ` On Dolby Volume automatic ally adjusts the difference in volume levels which can occu r between different conten ts or source components, freeing the user from having to make volume adjustments. Also, by adjusting the frequency balance according to the playback volume, it recreates the origina l so urce audio.
58 En LFE Level ■ Dolby Digital *1 , DTS *2 , Multich PCM, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DSD *3 ` – Q dB , –20dB , –10dB , or 0dB With these settings, you can set the level of the LFE (Low Frequency Effects) channel individually for each input sources.
59 En Note •“ Listening Mode ” is only available when the input signal matches the setting of “ Sound Program ”. •“ Music Optimizer ” is only availa ble when “ Stereo Source 1 ”, “ Stereo Source 2 ” or “ Stereo S ource 3 ” is sel ected.
60 En ■ Dynamic Volume ` Off ` Light : Activates Light Compression Mode. ` Medium : Activates Medium Compression Mode. ` Heavy : Activates Heavy Compression Mode. This setting affects volume the most. It quiets the loud parts, such as explosions, and boosts the quiet parts so they can be heard.
61 En To correct a character: Tip • To name a radio preset, use TU NER to select AM or F M, and then select the preset ( ➔ page 32 ). • To restore a custom name to its def ault, erase the custom name by entering an empty white spac e for each letter.
62 En W ith “ Picture Mo de ”, you can change the follo wing settings to be suitable for the movie or game screen by one operation: “ Game Mode ”, “ Film Mode ”, “ Edge Enhancem ent ”,.
63 En ■ Brightness *1*3*5 ` –50 to 0 to +50 With this setting you can adju st the picture brightness. “ –50 ” is the darkest. “ +50 ” is the bright est. ■ Contrast *1*3*5 ` –50 to 0 to +50 With this setting you ca n adjust contrast. “ –50 ” is the least.
64 En Note • The setting is stored individually f or each input selector. • This setting can be made only for the input source that is assigned as HDMI IN , COAX IAL I N , or OPTICAL IN . •T h e “ Audio Selector ” settings cannot be used with the NET , USB and PORT (with connected compon ent) input selectors.
65 En ■ 2ch Source With this setting, you can sp ecify the listening mode used when 2-channel (2/0) stereo digital sources, such as Dolby Digital or DTS, are playe d.
66 En ■ BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, GAME, PC, AUX, TUNER, TV/CD, PHONO , PORT, NET, USB ` Off : No trigger signal is output. A 12-volt trigger signal is output when the connected component is selected.
67 En HDMI ■ HDMI Control(RIHD) ` Off ` On Turn this setting on to allow p -compatible components connec ted via HDMI to be controlled by the AV controller ( ➔ page 98 ). Note • When the setting is set to “ On ” and the menu is closed, the names of connected p -compatible components and “ RIHD On ” are displayed on the AV controller.
68 En ■ Audio Return Channel ` Off ` Auto : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT MAIN of the AV co ntroller. The audio return channel (ARC) function allows an ARC capable TV to send the audio stream to the HDMI OUT MAIN of the AV controller.
69 En ■ Proxy URL To use a Web proxy, enter its URL here. ■ Proxy Port If you’re using a Web proxy, enter a prox y port number here. ■ Network C ontrol ` Enable ` Disable This setting enables or disabl es control over the network.
70 En With this pref erence, you can protect you r settings by locking the setup menus. Main menu Lock Setup ■ Setup ` Locked ` Unlocked When “ Locked ” is selected, th e setup menus will be locked and you cannot change any setting. You can change various audi o settings from the Home menu ( ➔ page 44 ).
71 En Dolby Volume ■ Dolby Volum e See “Dolby Volume” of “Audio Adjust” ( ➔ page 57 ). Note • This setting ca nnot be use d in either of the following cases: – Pure Audio or Dir ect listening mode is selected. – the multichannel analog input is selected.
72 En Re-EQ With the Re-EQ function, you can compensate a soundtrack whose high-frequenc y content is too harsh, making it more suitable for home theater viewi ng.
73 En Multi Zone In addition to the main listen ing room, you can also enjoy playback in the ot her roo m, or as we call Multi Zone. And, you can select a different source for each room. Zone 2/3 speakers must be connected to individual amplifiers in Zone 2/3.
74 En ■ Operating on th e AV controller ■ Operating on the remote controller To control Zone 2/3, you must press the remote controller’s ZONE firs t.
75 En Adjusting the T one and Balance of Zones Note • Only analog input sources ar e output by th e ZONE 2/3 PRE/LINE OUT terminals. Digital input sources are not output. If no sound is heard when an input source is selected, verify that the source is connected to an analog input.
76 En To control the AV controller with the remote controller while you’re in Zone, you’ll need a commercially available multir oom remote control kit for ea ch zone.
77 En Controlling Other Compon ents iPod/iPhone Playback via Onkyo Dock UP-A1 Dock With the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the music, photos, or movies stored on your Apple iPod/iPhone through the AV controller and enjoy great sound. You can use the AV controlle r’s remote controller to operate your iPod/iPhone.
78 En ■ Status Messages If either of the following mess ages is not displayed on the AV controller’s display, ch eck the connection to your iPod/iPhone. • PORT Readin g The AV controller is checki ng the connection with the dock. • PORT Not Supp ort The AV controller do not support the connected dock.

80 En Controlling Other Components You can use the AV controll er’s remote controller to control your other AV compon ents, including those made by other manufacturers . This section expl ains how to enter the remote control code for a component that you want to control: DVD, TV , CD, etc.
81 En You’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • Though the provided remote contr ol codes are correct at the time of printing, they are subject to change. 12 When you searched for the mod el, a message “Successful” will appear .
82 En Onkyo components that are connected via u are controlled by pointing the remote controller at the AV controller, not the component. This allows you to control components that are out of view, in a rack, for example.
83 En Note • With some components, certain butto ns may not work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : Available buttons *1 When you pres s 8 SOURCE , the related component is turned on (or off). *2 The p function is not suppor ted. 84 En The AV controller ’s remote controller can learn the commands of other remote c ontrollers. By transmitting, for example, the Pla y command from your CD player’s remote controller, the supplied remote controller can learn it, and then reproduce the ex act same command when its 1 is pressed in CD remote mode.
85 En You can program the remote controller ’s ACTIVITIES to perform a sequence of re mote control actions. Example: To play a CD you typically ne ed to perform the following actions: 1. Press RECEIVER to select the Re ceiver remote controller mode.

92 En Firmware Update To update the firmware of the AV controller, you can choose from the following two methods: update via network, or update via USB storage. Choose the one that best suits your envi ronment. Before proceeding with the update, please read the co rresponding explanations carefully.
93 En Troubleshooting Case 1: If “ No U pdate ” is displayed on the front display of the AV controller, it means that the fir mware has already been updated. You do not need to do anything further. Case 2: If an error occurs, “ Error!! *- ** ” is displayed on the front display of the AV controller.

95 En Connection Tips and Video Signal Path The AV controller supports several connection formats for co mp atibility with a wi de range of AV eq uipment. The format you choose will depend on the fo rmats supported by your components. Use the follow ing sections as a guide.
96 En ■ “Monitor Ou t” set to “Analog” Video input signals flow th rough the AV controller as shown, with composite video, S-Video, and PC IN (Analog RGB) sources being upconverted for the component video output. 98 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV, Player, or Recorder p , which stands for Remote Interactive over HDMI, is the name of the system control function found on Onkyo components. The AV controller can be us ed with CEC (Consumer Electronics C ontrol), which allows system control over HDMI and is part of the HDMI sta ndard.

100 En About HDMI Designed to meet the inc reased demands of digital TV, HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a new digital interface standard for conne cting TVs, projectors, Blu -ray Disc/DVD players, set- top boxes, and other video components.
101 En Network/USB Features The following diagram shows how you can connect the AV controller to your home networ k. In this example, it’s connected to a LAN port on a router, which has a 4-port 100Base-TX switch built-in. ■ Ethernet Networ k For the best results, a 100B ase-TX switched Ethernet network is recommended.
102 En ■ Server playback The AV controller can play digital music files stored on a computer or media server and supports the following technologies: • Windows Media Player 11 • Windows Media Player 12 • Windows Media Connect 2.
103 En For server playback and playback from a USB device, the AV controller supports the following music file formats. Variable bit-rate (VBR) fi les are supported. However, playback time may not be display correctly. Note • With remote playback, the AV controller does not support the following music file fo rmats: FLAC and Ogg Vorbis.
