12 Remote Contr oller Notes: • If the remote controller doesn ’ t w ork reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don ’ t mix ne w and old batteries or dif ferent types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remov e the batteries to prev ent damage from leakage or corrosion.
13 Remote Controller —Continued The remote controller can be used to control different components including the A V receiv er. The remote con- troller has a speci fi c operating mode for use with each type of component. Modes are selected by using the six REMO TE MODE buttons.

18 Connecting the A V Receiver • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don ’ t connect the po wer cord until you ’ v e completed and double-checked all A V connections.
19 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Speaker Configuration For the best surround sound e xperience, you should con- nect fi ve speakers and a po wered subwoofer . The following table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve.
20 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Speaker Connection Precautions Read the following before connecting your speak ers: • Only connect speakers with an impedance of 6 ohms or higher .
21 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and ho w to connect commercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiv er won ’ t pick up an y radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
22 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Connecting an Outdoor FM Antenna If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.
23 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued By connecting both the audio and video outputs of your D VD player and other A V components to the A V receiv er, you can select both the audio and video simultaneously simply by selecting the appropriate input source on the A V receiv er.

26 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Hooking Up the Multichannel D VD Input If your D VD player supports multichannel audio formats such as D VD-Audio or SA CD, and it has a multichannel analog audio output, you can connect it to the A V receiv er ’ s multichannel D VD input.

37 T urning On the A V Receiver • Connect the A V receiv er ’ s po wer cord to a suitable wall outlet. Notes: • Befor e connecting the power cord, connect all of y our speakers and A V components. • T urning on the A V receiv er may cause a momentary power sur ge that might interfere with other electrical equipment on the same circuit.
38 Fir st Time Setup The onscreen setup menus are displayed on the connected TV and pro vide a con venient way to change the A V recei ver ’ s settings (The onscreen menus do not appear on a TV that ’ s connected to the HDMI OUT). About the Onscreen Setup Menus Menu ------------------------ 00.
39 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a component to a digital input jack, you must assign that jack to an input selector . F or example, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN2 jack, you should assign that jack to the CD input selec- tor .
40 First Time Setup —Continued HDMI Video Setup If you connect a video component to HDMI IN 1 or 2, you must assign that input to an input selector . F or exam- ple, if you connect your D VD player to HDMI IN 1, you must assign HDMI IN 1 to the D VD input selector .
41 First Time Setup —Continued Component Video Setup If you connect to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN, you must assign it to an input selector . F or example, if you connect your D VD player to COMPONENT IN 3, you should assign it to the D VD input selector .
42 First Time Setup —Continued W ith these settings, you can specify which speakers are connected and a crossov er frequency for each speaker . The following crosso ver frequencies can be speci fi ed: Full Band, 40 Hz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 80 Hz, 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 150 Hz, 200 Hz.
43 First Time Setup —Continued Low-P ass Filter f or the LFE Channel W ith this setting, you can specify the cutoff frequenc y of the LFE channel ’ s lo w-pass fi lter (LPF), which can be used to fi lter out unwanted hum. The LPF only applies to sources that use the LFE channel.
44 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect an -capable Onkyo MiniDisc recorder , CD recorder , or next generation HDD-compat- ible component to the T APE IN/OUT or VIDEO 3 IN jacks, for to work properly , you must change this setting. This setting can only be changed on the A V receiv er.

46 Basic Operations —Continued The multichannel D VD input is for connecting a compo- nent with a 5.1-channel analog audio output, such as a D VD-Audio or SA CD-capable D VD player , or an MPEG decoder .
47 Basic Operations —Continued Y ou can adjust the brightness of the display . Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiver. W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off automatically after a speci fi ed period.
48 Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjo y AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vorite stations as presets for quick selection. Listening to the Radio T uning into Radio Stations ■ A uto T uning Mode When tuned into a station, the TUNED indicator appears.

50 Listening to the Radio —Continued RDS only works with European models and only in areas where RDS broadcasts are av ailable. When tuned into an RDS station, the RDS indicator appears. ■ What is RDS? RDS stands for Radio Data System and is a method of transmitting data in FM radio signals.

59 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The A V receiver ’ s listening modes can transform your listening room into a movie theater or concert hall, with high fi delity and stunning surround sound.
60 Using the Listening Modes —Continued Onky o Original DSP Modes Mono Movie This mode is suitable for old movies and other mono sources. The center speak er outputs the sound as it is, while rev erb is applied to the sound output by the other speakers, gi ving presence to ev en mono material.
61 Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the current input source and how to dub audio onto your video recordings. Notes: • The surround sound and DSP listening modes cannot be recorded. • Copy-protected D VDs cannot be recorded. • Y ou cannot record from the D VD analog multichannel input.
62 Ad v anced Operations W ith the Late Night function, you can reduce the dynamic range of Dolby Digital material so that you can still hear quiet parts ev en when listening at low v olume lev els — ideal for watching movies late at night when you don ’ t w ant to disturb anyone.
63 Ad v anced Setup Speaker Distance Here you can specify the distance from each speaker to the listening position so that the sound from each speaker arri ves at the listener ’ s ears as the sound designer intended. Notes: • The Center and Subwoofer distances can be set up to 5 ft.
64 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Level Calibration Here you can adjust the lev el of each speaker with the built-in test tone so that the v olume of each speaker is the same at the listening position. Note: The speakers cannot be calibrated while the output of the A V receiv er is muted or while a pair of headphones is connected.
65 Adv anced Setup —Continued SW Input Sensitivity Some D VD players output the LFE channel from their subwoofer output at 15 dB higher than normal. Y ou can change the subwoofer sensiti vity to match your D VD player . Note that this setting only af fects signals con- nected to the SUBWOOFER input jack of the multi- channel D VD input.
66 Adv anced Setup —Continued The Audio Adjust functions are explained below . Input Channel Settings ■ Multiplex This setting determines which channel is output from a stereo multiplex source. Use it to select audio channels or languages with multiplex sources, multilingual TV broadcasts, and so on.
67 Adv anced Setup —Continued Y ou can assign a default listening mode to each input source that will be selected automatically when you select each input source. For e xample, you can set the default listening mode to be used with Dolby Digital input signals.
68 Adv anced Setup —Continued Y ou can set the input lev el for each input source. This is useful if some of your A V components are louder or qui- eter than others. While this menu is shown onscreen, you can select each input source and set the lev els while listening to and comparing them.
69 Adv anced Setup —Continued Maximum V olume W ith this preference, you can prev ent the volume being set too high by specifying a maximum volume le vel.
70 Adv anced Setup —Continued W ith this preference, you can protect your settings by locking the setup menus. When the setup menus are locked, you cannot change any setting.
71 Adv anced Setup —Continued When using progressiv e scanning on your D VD player , you may fi nd that the picture and sound are out of sync. W ith this setting, you can correct this by delaying the audio signals. Y ou can set it from 0 to 100 milliseconds (ms) in 10 millisecond steps.
72 Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er ’ s remote controller (RC-651M) to control your other A V components, including those made by other manufacturers. This sec- tion explains ho w to enter the necessary remote control code for the component that you want to control (e.
73 Controlling Other Components —Continued Onkyo components that are connected via are con- trolled by pointing the remote controller at the A V receiv er, not the component. This allo ws you to control components that are out of view , in a rack, for example.

(Y ou must select the appropriate r emote control mode fi rst.) With some A V components, certain buttons may not work as expected, and some may not work at all.

77 T roub leshooting —Continued The subwoof er produces no sound • When you play source material that contains no infor- mation in the LFE channel, the subwoofer produces no sound.
