10 En About Home Theater Y ou can use two sets of speak ers with the A V receiv er: Speakers A and Speak ers B . Speakers A should be used in your main listeni ng room for up to 5.1-channel playback. * While Speakers B is on, Speakers A is reduced to 2.
11 En Connections Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 5.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need fi ve speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
12 En Connecting the Speaker Cab les Screw-type speak er terminals Using Banana Plugs • If you are using banana plugs, tighten th e speaker terminal before inserting the banana plug. • Do not insert the speaker code directly in to the center hole of the speaker terminal.
13 En Connected ima ge with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read th e manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve comp leted and double-checked all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to mak e good connecti ons (loose connecti ons can cause noise or malfunc- tions).

16 En W ith u (Remote Interacti ve), you can use the follo wing special functions: ■ System On/A uto P ower On When you start playback on a component connected via u , if the A V receiver is on Standby , it will automati- cally turn on and select th at component as the input source.
17 En The A V recei ver supports se veral conn ection formats for comp atibilit y with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the fo rmats supported by your components.

Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute function is ca ncelled when the A V receiv er is set to Standb y . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off aut omatically after a specif ied period.
21 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection.
22 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. 23 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capa bility , and how to record audio and video from different sources. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V recei ver must be turned on for recording.
24 En Using the Listening Modes See “ About Listening Modes” for detailed information about the listening mod es ( ➔ 24 ). 26 En Onky o-Original DSP List ening Modes Note *1 For the Blu-ray Discs, Dolby Digital is used. *2 A V rece i ver can input the DSD signal from HDMI IN . Setting the output setting on the player side to PCM might obtain a better sound according to the player .
27 En Advanced Operations Adv anced Setup Note The on-screen setup menus are displayed when: • There is no video input, or • The video input is 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a con venient way to change the A V rece iv er’ s various settings.
28 En Explanatory No tes Menu HDMI Inpu t If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector . For example, if you connect your Blu-ray Disc/D VD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI2 ” to the “ BD/D VD ” input selector .
29 En Note •W h e n a n HDMI IN is assigned to an input selector in “HDMI Input” ( ➔ 28 ), this input assignment is automatically set to the same HDMI IN . And in addition to the usual inputs (e.g., COAX , etc.), you can also select HDMI inputs.
30 En ■ Left, Center, Righ t, Surround Rig ht, Surr ound Left, Subwoofer ` Specify the dist ance from the each speaker to your lis- tening position. Note • The speaker distance setting cannot be changed while a pair of headphones is connected, or “ A udio TV OUT ” setting is set to “ On ” ( ➔ 31 ) or Speakers B is on.
31 En DTS Setting Neo:6 Music ■ Center Im age ` 0 to 2 to 5 W ith this setting, you can spec ify by ho w much the front left and right channel output is attenuated in order to create the center ch annel. Setting a v alue “0” in the middle is set to hea r a sound.
32 En Note •I f “ On ” is selected and the signal can be output by the TV , the A V receiver will output no sound through its speakers. •I f “ On ” is selec ted, “ TV Sp On ” appears on the display by pressing DISPLA Y . • When “ TV Contr ol ” is set to “ On ” , this setting is fixed to “ Au t o ” .
33 En Note • Do not assign the compon ent conn ected with the HDMI input to the TV/CD selector when you set “ TV Contr ol ” setting to “ On ”.
34 En Music Opti mizer The Music Optimizer function en hances the sound quality of compressed music files. Use it with musi c files that use “lossy” compression, such as MP3.
35 En The digital input si gnal formats are av ailable only for the input sources that you hav e a ssigned a digital input jack ( ➔ 28 ). Normally , the A V receiv er detects the signal format auto- matically .

37 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the music, photo, or mo vie stored on your iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
38 En ■ System Function System On When you turn on the A V recei ver, RI Dock and iPod turn on automatically . In addition, when the RI Dock and iPod are on, the A V receiv er can be turned on by pressing ON/ ST ANDBY .

40 En Contr olling Other Onky o Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote controller (RC-762M) to control your other Onkyo A V components. This section explains ho w to enter the remote control code (with the default underlined) for a component that you want to co ntrol: D VD, CD, etc.
41 En If you want to control an Onk yo component by pointing the remote controller dir ectly at it, use the followin g remote control codes: ` 32900 : Onkyo Blu-ray Disc play er ` 32901 : Onkyo HD-D V.
