Effects of zoom and its advantages A zoom is a lens with a focal length that changes wh en part of lens moves. In t h e case o f t h e I S - 1 , any focal length between 3 5 mm and 1 3 5 mm ca n be selected.
*The five pictures below are samples taken by a photographer using the zoom lens. No tice the dim ensions of the subject a s th e camera zooms in. T he three pictures o n the right were taken without chang- ing t he subject's size. Notice how the background a nd foreground tend to blur at increased focal lengths.
Autofocus (AF) The Autofocus (AF) mechanism automatically adjusts focu s b y measuring the d istance-to-subject. Focusing i s accomplished b y a T T L (through-the- le ns ) phase-difference detection system. More simply, an AF sensor catches t h e l ight reflected of f of the subject, calculates t h e distance, an d activates the lens to focus.
Subjects that are difficult t o focus Although the IS-1 c a n focus on almost any subject, there are certain conditions, such as those shown in th e illustrations, where it may not be possible to obtain correct focus. In su ch c a se s , th e autofocus indicator in th e viewfinder will blink to warn you.
Exposure Automatic exposure mode Exposure refers to t h e amount of the light which strikes th e film and is contr ol led by a combina- tion of aperture size and shutter speed. The correct amount of the light, or correct exposure, is controlled according to the film speed (indicated on t he film package, s u ch as ISO 1 0 0 or ISO 200).
Program chart (p o rtrait mode) Th e chart shown below is a program chart f o r portrait m ode. The shutter speed will automatically adjust up to 172000 second wi t h t he aperture fully opened. As the brightness increases from there, th e aperture will begin to ad j u s t.
Measuring t he amount o f light Light metering Light metering refers to measuring the brightness of certain parts of a pic tur e. The IS -1 employs three meterings: ( 1 ) E S P ligh t metering, ( 2 ) center- weighted average light metering, and ( 3 ) spot metering.
Exposure compensation and film speed Fixed pr ope r exposure Proper exposure refers to the balance of light and dark in a photo. W hen shooting a black an d w hi te wall, t h e exposure will be based on t h e average ratio of black an d w h ite—thus the overall exposure is set f o r gre y.
Flash *Flash s tr en gt h Th e flash o n the IS-1 uses a new exposure control system. This flash system combines advantages o f both "flashmatic", employed in compact cameras and "auto flash" whi ch is e m ployed i n SLRs.
Di r ec t flash Multi flash Normal slow-synchro (Curtain-1 synchro) Bounce (with simultaneous us e of b u ilt-in flash) Follow-synchro (Curtain-2 synchro) — 62 —.
