16 PREP ARA TION SETTING THE D A TE AND TIME 1 Press the button. The monitor tur ns on. 2 Press the button. The monitor sho ws the Pla y menu. 3 Select [SETUP] using the / b uttons and press the button. 4 Select [ ] using the / b uttons and press the button.
17 PREP ARA TION SETTING THE DA TE AND TIME 5 Select the date format “Y-M-D (Y ear -Month-Day)”, “M-D-Y (Month-Day-Y ear)” or “D-M-Y (Day-Month-Y ear)” using the / b uttons, and press the button. The monitor shows date setting screen. 6 Set the first figure using the / buttons and press the b utton.
18 T AKING PICTURES Note Clear images can not be obtained if the camera shak es when the shutter b utton is pressed. Hold the camera correctly , and press the shutter b utton gently . 19 T AKING PICTURES Green lamp AF target mark T AKING PICTURES Y ou can use either the viewfinder or the monitor . Whiche v er you choose , y ou can take pictures simply b y pressing the shutter button. When you tak e pictures, the images are recorded on the Smar tMedia card in the camera.
20 T AKING PICTURES T AKING PICTURES T AKING PICTURES USING THE MONIT OR 1 Open the lens barrier . 2 Press the button. The monitor tur ns on. Press the button again to turn the monitor off . 3 Determine the image composition b y observing y our subject in the monitor .
21 T AKING PICTURES T AKING PICTURES Note • It is recommended that you look through the monitor when shooting a subject at distances of 50 cm-1.5 m/1.6 ft-4.9 ft. • With the vie wfinder , the area of the image actually shot is larger than the area obser ved in the vie wfinder .
22 T AKING PICTURES THE FUNCTION OF THE GREEN LAMP AND THE ORANGE LAMP If the green lamp or the or ange lamp on the right of the vie wfinder lights, goes off or b links , it indicates the f ollo wing. Lamp status Camera oper ation What y ou can/can not do Green lamp lights.
23 T AKING PICTURES FOCUS LOCK If your subject is not within the AF target mark, y ou can bring it into f ocus b y f ollo wing the f ocus loc k procedure belo w . 1 Open the lens barrier . The camera tur ns on in the Record mode. 2 Look into the viewfinder and position the AF target mark over the subject.
24 T AKING PICTURES SUBJECTS THA T ARE DIFFICUL T T O FOCUS ON USING THE A UT OFOCUS The autof ocus ma y not work proper ly f or the f ollo wing subjects. If this happens , lock the f ocus on an object with high contrast that is at the same distance from the camer a as the subject, then aim at the subject to tak e the picture .
25 PLA YING BA CK PICTURES PLA YING BACK PICTURES CHECKING RECORDED IMA GES (PLA YB A CK) Y ou can pla y bac k images one b y one on the monitor . 1 Press the button with the lens barrier closed. The monitor tur ns on in the Pla y mode and shows the last picture y ou took.
26 PLA YING BA CK PICTURES QUICK VIEW (DOUBLE-CLICK PLA YBA CK IN THE RECORD MODE) Y ou can pla y bac k the image y ou hav e just tak en, with the lens barr ier open. After y ou chec k the image, y ou can return immediately to the Record mode. 1 Press the button twice (double c lic king).
27 PLA YING BA CK PICTURES ERASING AN IMA GE 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button. The camera tur ns on in the Pla y mode. 2 Press the / buttons and pla y back the ima ge y ou want to erase . See “Chec king recorded images” ( p . 25). 3 Press the button f or more than 1 second.
28 PLA YING BA CK PICTURES PR O TECTING IMPOR T ANT IMA GES Impor tant images can be protected against accidental erasure. 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button. The camera tur ns on in the Pla y mode. 2 Press the / b uttons to display the ima ge y ou want to protect.

30 RECORDING FUNCTIONS FLASH The flash is designed to fire automatically when the flash setting is A UT O (def ault setting) and you tak e pictures under low light conditions or against strong bac klight. Y ou can change the flash mode to suite diff erent shooting situations .
31 RECORDING FUNCTIONS Ey es ma y appear red Note • Y ou can set the flash mode by selecting [ ] on the Camer a menu. • The flash wor king distance is appro ximately 0.2 m ~ 3.5 m/ 0.7 ft ~11.5 ft. • All the flash settings returns to A UT O mode (def ault setting) when the clear settings value is [RESET] and the lens barrier is closed.
32 RECORDING FUNCTIONS Caution • Because of the pre-flashes, it tak es about 2 seconds before the shutter is actually released. Hold the camera securely during this per iod to pre v ent camera shak e.
33 RECORDING FUNCTIONS NIGHT SCENE/RED-EYE ( ) Use this mode when photogr aphing people against a night bac kground. The flash fires first while the shutter speed is reduced to capture the surrounding lighting conditions. The red-e ye phenomenon is minimized by the pre-flash.
34 RECORDING FUNCTIONS 3 When the current Macr o mode displa y indicates [OFF], press the b utton once again. The Macro mode is set and the monitor tur ns on. 4 T ake a picture b y composing the subject using the monitor . Note The Macro mode is canceled when the clear settings v alue is [RESET] and the lens barrier is closed.
35 RECORDING FUNCTIONS DIGIT AL TELE MODE This mode enab les you to enlarge the image to magnifications 1.6 × , 2 × , 2.5 × , 3.2 × , 4 × and 5 × . The image quality needs to be set to SQ2 to magnify 3.2 ×, 4 × or 5 × . See “ Image quality ” ( p .
36 RECORDING FUNCTIONS EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION Although the camera ’ s e xposure is set automatically , y ou can v ar y it to change the image brightness in the range of ±2 stops in 0.5-stop steps . Note • Use this function to obtain correct brightness (e xposure) when there is significant contrast (diff erence in br ightness) in the image.
37 RECORDING FUNCTIONS 5 Adjust the exposure compensation setting using the / b uttons and press the button. Press [ – ] to darken image or [+] to br ighten image. The e xposure compensation setting is no w completed. Press the b utton again to e xit the menu.
38 RECORDING FUNCTIONS SELF-TIMER Y ou can shoot images using the self-timer function. Fix the camera securely on a tripod, etc., before shooting. The self-timer is useful f or taking commemorativ e pictures including the photog rapher . 1 Open the lens barrier .
39 RECORDING FUNCTIONS SELF-TIMER 6 Press the shutter b utton. The self-timer lamp on the front of the camera lights up f or 10 seconds and then blinks f or 2 seconds, bef ore the picture is tak en. Note • The self-timer is canceled automatically after the picture is tak en.
40 RECORDING FUNCTIONS SEQ UENCE MODE The Sequence mode allo ws you to tak e a rapid succession of still images b y pressing and holding the shutter b utton (up to 8 images at appro x. 1.2 frames per second). Y ou can choose the best image from a series of sequential shots .
41 RECORDING FUNCTIONS 6 T ake pictures. (Press the shutter b utton and keep it pressed. Recor ding will stop when the shutter button is released.) Note • The sequence mode is canceled when the clear settings v alue is [RESET] and the lens barrier is closed.
42 RECORDING FUNCTIONS FIXED FOCUS This function is useful f or shooting distant scenes that are difficult to br ing into f ocus , such as taking pictures of large fire work displa ys . T o achiev e more eff ective image at night, set the flash to the Night Scene mode in addition.
43 RECORDING FUNCTIONS SPO T METERING MODE Y our subject may appear dark when it is against a bright bac kground. In this case , change the meter ing setting to SPO T . The camer a calculates the e xposure using only the lighting inf or mation at the center of the vie wfinder without it being aff ected b y the bac kground light.
44 RECORDING FUNCTIONS WHITE BALANCE This camera incorporates electronic circuitr y to automatically adjust color hues so that the y appear more natural (auto white balance control circuit). If the auto white balance does not produce accur ate results due to weather or lighting conditions , you can control the white balance man ually .
45 RECORDING FUNCTIONS 5 Select [A UT O], [ ], [ ], [ ] or [ ] using the / b uttons and press the b utton. The white balance setting is now completed. Press the button again to e xit the menu.
46 RECORDING FUNCTIONS IMA GE Q U ALITY Set the image quality bef ore shooting. Note Image quality settings * The ter m “ pixel ” stands for “ picture element ” .
47 RECORDING FUNCTIONS 5 Select [SHQ], [HQ], [SQ1] or [SQ2] using the / buttons and press the button. The image quality setting is now completed. Press the b utton again to e xit the menu.
48 RECORDING FUNCTIONS SHARPNESS Use this function when y ou want to soften the contours of the subject or alter nativ ely when y ou want to emphasiz e the contours to achie ve a sharper image . Note Sharpness settings HARD: The outline of the subject is emphasized.
49 RECORDING FUNCTIONS 5 Select [HARD], [NORMAL] or [SOFT] using the / b uttons and press the b utton. The shar pness setting is now completed. Press the button again to e xit the menu. 6 T ake a picture. Note The shar pness setting retur ns to NORMAL (def ault setting) when the clear settings v alue is [RESET] and the lens barrier is closed.
50 RECORDING FUNCTIONS CONTRAST Use this function when y ou want to emphasiz e , or alternatively reduce , the contrast betw een the bright areas and the dar k areas of the subject. Note Contrast settings HIGH: The diff erence between the br ight and dark areas is enhanced to giv e the image a higher contrast eff ect.
51 RECORDING FUNCTIONS 5 Select [HIGH], [NORMAL] or [LO W] using the / b uttons and press the b utton. The contrast setting is no w completed. Press the button again to e xit the menu. 6 T ake a picture. Note The contrast setting returns to NORMAL (def ault setting) when the clear settings v alue is [RESET] and the lens barrier is closed.
52 PLA YBA CK FUNCTIONS PLA YBACK FUNCTIONS INDEX PLA YB A CK The pla ybac k can be changed from the Single-image pla yback to the Inde x pla ybac k. This mode is useful when y ou are looking f or a par ticular image. 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button.
53 PLA YBA CK FUNCTIONS CHANGING THE NUMBER OF IMAGES IN INDEX PLA YBA CK Select the number of images in the Inde x pla yback (y ou can select 4, 9 or 16 images). 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button. The camera tur ns on in the Pla y mode. 2 Press the button.
54 PLA YBA CK FUNCTIONS CLOSE-UP PLA YB A CK Images can be pla y ed bac k in 4 le vel s of magnification: 1.5 × , 2 × , 2.5 × and 3 × . This function is con v enient when you w ant to chec k details in the picture tak en. 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button.
55 PLA YBA CK FUNCTIONS A UT O PLA YB A CK Y ou can view images stored on the card automatically in their stored order as a “ slide show ” . This function is useful when y ou want to view images in sequence. 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button.
56 PLA YBA CK FUNCTIONS ERASING ALL IMA GES 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button. The camera turns on in the Play mode. 2 Press the button. The monitor sho ws the Pla y menu. 3 Select [SETUP] using the / b uttons and press the button. 4 Select [ ] using the / buttons and press the button.
57 O THER FUNCTIONS OTHER FUNCTIONS RECORDING AND PLA YING B A CK MO VIES Y ou can take mo vies as well as still pictures with this camer a. Movies can be pla y ed bac k or sa ved separ ately as still pictures using the Inde x function. RECORDING MO VIES 1 Open the lens barrier .
58 O THER FUNCTIONS 6 Record mo vies by looking at the monitor . Press the shutter button to start recor ding. Press the shutter button a gain to stop recor ding. The remaining recordab le time is displa yed in seconds on the monitor . Note • The flash and Digital tele can not be used in the Mo vie mode .
59 O THER FUNCTIONS RECORDING AND PLA YING BACK MOVIES CHANGING THE QU ALITY AND SIZE OF A MO VIE There are tw o image quality settings (HQ and SQ) f or recording movies . Note Image quality settings 1 Select Mo vie mode and press the button. The monitor shows the Camer a menu.
60 O THER FUNCTIONS PLA YING B A CK MO VIES 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button. The camera tur ns on in the Play mode. 2 Press the / b uttons to display the movie y ou want to see (indicated by a symbol) and press the button. The monitor sho ws the Pla y menu.
61 O THER FUNCTIONS RECORDING AND PLA YING BACK MOVIES P A USING MO VIE PLA YB ACK AND REVIEWING SPECIFIC MO VIE FRAMES Y ou can temporar ily stop a mo vie at any fr ame during pla yback b y pressing any b utton on the arrow pad (pause status).

63 O THER FUNCTIONS P ANORAMA MODE The Olympus CAMEDIA brand cards suppor t the P anorama mode. Y ou can link se v er al images to mak e a connected panorama image on a computer using the CAMEDIA Master software included. P anor ama images can not be merged on this camer a.
64 O THER FUNCTIONS 6 Specify the desired direction f or mer ging using the / / / b uttons. The arrows indicating the direction f or merging are displa yed on the monitor . 7 T ake pictures so that the edges o verlap. A maximum of 10 images can be connected.
65 O THER FUNCTIONS COMPOSITE IMA GES Y ou can compose an image from two images taken in succession and sa ve it as a single image. 1 Open the lens barrier . The camera tur ns on in the Record mode. 2 Press the button. The monitor shows the Camer a menu.
66 O THER FUNCTIONS COMPOSITE IMAGES 5 Select [2 IN 1] using the / b uttons and press the button. The composite mode is no w set. The monitor tur ns on automatically . 6 While viewing the monitor , take the fir st image . The subject is positioned on the left.
67 O THER FUNCTIONS EDITING IMA GES MONOCHR OME (BLA CK AND WHITE) IMA GES Y ou can tur n selected images into monochrome images and sav e them separately . 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button. The camera tur ns on in the Play mode. 2 Display the ima ge you want to turn into a monochr ome image on the monitor and press the button.
68 O THER FUNCTIONS SEPIA IMA GES Y ou can tur n selected images into sepia images and sa v e them separately . 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button. The camera turns on in the Play mode. 2 Display the ima ge y ou want to turn into a sepia image on the monitor and press the button.
69 O THER FUNCTIONS EDITING IMAGES RESIZING Y ou can change the size of a selected image to 640 × 480 or 320 × 240 and sa v e it separately . Use this function when you w ant to reduce the image data v olume , f or e xample: when y ou send an e-mail with an image attached.
70 O THER FUNCTIONS R O T A TING Y ou can rotate a selected image 90 degrees cloc kwise or countercloc kwise and sa v e it separ ately . This function is useful f or tur ning a ver tical image into a horizontal position. 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button.
71 O THER FUNCTIONS MUTING THE BEEP T ONES This function enab les y ou to tur n off the beep tones. 1 Open the lens barrier . The camera tur ns on in the Record mode. 2 Press the button. The monitor shows the Camer a menu. 3 Select [SETUP] using the / b uttons and press the button.
72 O THER FUNCTIONS FORMA TTING A NEW CARD This function enab les y ou to f or mat the Smar tMedia card. Any images on the card can be erased when the card is f or matted.
73 O THER FUNCTIONS 5 Select [ FORMA T] using the / buttons and press the button. 6 Select [ FORMA T] using the / buttons and press the button. The card is formatted. Once star ted, f or matting can not be cancelled. Note Y ou can also format a card from the Camera menu.
74 O THER FUNCTIONS REC VIEW After each picture is tak en, the image is displa yed on the LCD monitor f or a f e w seconds for y ou to vie w . 1 Open the lens barrier . The camera turns on in the Record mode. 2 Press the button. The monitor sho ws the Camera menu.
75 O THER FUNCTIONS CLEAR SETTINGS Y ou can choose to keep the shooting-related settings, such as the flash mode and image quality settings, as the y are f or the ne xt picture or retur n to the def ault settings when the camera is tur ned off .
76 O THER FUNCTIONS CLEAR SETTINGS CLEAR SETTINGS V ALUE [RESET] When the camera is tur ned off , the shooting-related settings are deleted and the camera re v er ts to the def aults (def ault settings). [HOLD] The settings remain, e v en if the camer a is turned off.
77 O THER FUNCTIONS DISPLA YING IMA GE INFORMA TION This function enab les y ou to displa y or not to displa y the image inf or mation on the monitor while the image is pla y ed back. If you select [ON], the inf ormation is displa yed f or 3 seconds .
78 O THER FUNCTIONS MONIT OR BRIGHTNESS If the monitor is hard to see , y ou can adjust it to suit the surrounding br ightness . 1 Close the lens barrier and press the button. The camer a tur ns on in the Pla y mode . 2 Press the button. The monitor sho ws the Pla y menu.
79 O THER FUNCTIONS PRINT RESER VE This function enab les y ou to set and store the desired print setting of the images recorded on the Smar tMedia card for printing at photoshops with DPOF-compatib le printer . Note • The image to be pr inted is marked with the symbol.
80 O THER FUNCTIONS PRINT RESERVE 6 Select the print reserve item using the / buttons and press the b utton. 7 Press the b utton to e xit the print reserve menu and press the button. Note • Print reser ve items [ ] : Chec ks the current print reser v e data.
81 O THER FUNCTIONS PRINT RESERVE 9 When you finish c hecking the settings or making any necessary changes, press the b utton. 10 Press the b utton to exit the print reser ve menu and press the button. SINGLE IMA GE 7 Specify the image and the number of prints.

7 Windows INST ALLING THE DRIVER (FIRST TIME ONL Y) If you are using Windows 98, install the dr iv er software required b y f ollowing the procedures e xplained belo w . If you are using Windows Me/2000, these procedures are not necessar y as the driver will be installed automatically .
