9 Installation Unpac king 1. Open the pac kaging , remove the f ax machine and its accessories and place them on a sta ble surfa ce. 2. Chec k the package contents carefully .

11 Connecting to P o wer and T elephone Netw o rk 1 . Insert the telephone line cable plug into the line jack (“LINE”) on the left-hand side of the machine. 3. Plug the ac po wer cable into the r ear panel socke t on your OKIF AX 740, and the other end into a suitable ac power socket .
12 Connection of T elephone (Optional) If you intend to use a normal telephone in conjunction with y our fax machine, follo w the ste ps in this section. Otherwise skip to the ne xt section. T her e are two methods by w hich a telephone ma y be connected: s e r ial tele phone connection and parallel tele phone connection.
13 Connection of Parallel T e lephone This method in volves the use of a tw o-way tele phone jack adapter (not supplied). 1. W ithdr a w the telephone line jack from the telephone network socket.
14 Installing the Ink Cartridge 1. Pr ess do wn the cover release ta b and lift the top cover to the fully upright position. 2. Slide the ink cartr i d ge carrier to wards the centre of its tr av e l, and then slightl y to the left, opposite the loading tab (1).
15 Installing P aper Y our fax machine uses plain pa per to pr int incoming messages. An y paper suitable f or use in a standard ink jet printer may be used.
16 3. Flush the sheets into a neat stack. 5. Adjust the pa per width le v e rs (1) & (2) to either LETTER or A4 as ap p r op riate. 4. Pull the paper feeder tow a r ds the fr ont of the f ax machine to open the feeder chute. 6. Insert the stac k , shor t edg e fi r st, into the feeder .

18 COPY/ST A R T Key This ke y starts the r equired oper a tion, s uch as transmitting, manual recei ving or copying a document. ST OP Key T his key stops the cur r ent operation, such as transmitting , recei ving or copying a document. It is also used to cancel an alarm signal after a malfunction.
19 MEMOR Y Ke y This key selects memory transmit operation. Documents may be scanned into memory for immediate or later transmission. CLEAR K e y T his k ey is used to delete entr ies for va rious machine settings or stored numbers.
20 TEL, TEL/F AX & T AD Lights T hese three lights indicate the selected r ecei ve mode . T he a v aila ble modes are: Fax Normal dedicated fax mode with auto-answe r . T el Man ual v oice/fax r ecei ve without auto-ans wer . T el/F ax V oice/f ax r ecei v e with auto-ans wer and audible indication.
21 Initial Settings 1. Ensur e tha t the ac po wer socket, if switched, is turned on. 2. Set the ac po wer on/of f switch (1) on y our OKIF AX 740 to ON. Th e ne xt task is to adjust a number of settings in y our OKIF AX 740 memory . These settings will be stored, ev en after power is turned of f .
22 Sender ID (Function 25) This item holds your name or compan y name if you wish this information to be printed at the top of each page. The entry may be up to 32 characters long, including spaces. 1 . Press [FUNCTION] [2] [5]. SENDER ID? Y/N 2. Press [YES].
23 CSI/TSI (Function 26) Y our fax tele phone number (Calling Sta tion ID / T ransmitting Sta tion ID) entered here a ppear s on the remote machine during f ax communication. T o set the n umber: 1 . Press [FUNCTION] [2] [6]. CSI/TSI? Y/N 2. Press [YES].
24 Speak er V olume (Function 41) Y our OKIF AX 740 has a built-in speaker to allo w monitoring of call progr ess dur ing dialling. The volume setting ma y be set to one of eight lev els, from silent to loud, as follo ws : 1 . Press [FUNCTION] [4] [1].
25 Print Quality (Function 43) The print quality of your OKIF AX 740 may be set to either Draft (f aster speed , ink conser v a tion) or Letter (slower speed , best pr int quality). T o select y our pr efer ence: 1 . Press [FUNCTION] [4] [3]. SET QUALITY? Y/N 2.
26 Reduction (Function 45) It is possible to reduce the v er tical siz e of incoming fax messages so that an over-sized messa ge ma y f it on a single page, a voiding paper wasta ge.
27 T ransmission Prepare to Send 1. Ensur e the OKIF AX 740 is in standby mode (display reads READ Y). 2. Select the resolution required: Fine Photo LE D LED Resolution A pplication Of f Of f Standard O r dinary , c lear , b lack & white te xt or line dra wings.
28 T ransmission After V oice This method of transmission is used if you have been in con v er sa tion with the remote party , and y ou then wish to send a fax bef or e hang ing up. 1. Load your document f ace do wn, top f irst, into the document feeder .
29 The call is placed automatically . When the remote fax machine answers, the message “TRANSMITTING” is displayed and your document is sent. During the transmission the remote identifica tion (name or telephone number) is displayed. When transmission is complete, y our OKIF AX 740 returns to standb y automatically .
30 The call is placed automatically , and tr ansmission begins when the remote f ax machine answers . At completion y our OKIF AX 740 will r eturn to standby . On-Hook Dialling This function enables one-handed dialling with audible progress monitoring (if you ha ve the v olume setting abo ve minim um).
31 P olling T ransmission (Function 10) Y our OKIF AX 740 can be set to automa tically send a document to a calling machine w hile unattended . This might be used, for example, w hen y our head office calls during the night to collect a report .
32 Dela y ed T ransmission (Function 11) Y ou may set a document for tr ansmitting una ttended a t a later time up to 24 hours ahead. This is useful for tr ansmitting during the night to take ad vantage of of f-peak call charges. T o set up a delayed transmission: 1.
33 Memor y T ransmission Using this fea tu r e your OKIF AX 740 can stor e a document in its internal memory for subsequent transmission, either immediately or at a later time. Y ou may scan y our document into memory , then ret riev e it lea ving your fax machine to place the call and send the document.

35 Reception Y our OKIF AX 740 pr ovides four modes for call rec e ption: • TEL mode • F AX mode • TEL/F AX mode • T AD mode Each mode is selecta ble at an y time by pr essing [RECEIVE MODE] . Y ou may also set the machine’ s def ault mode (the mode adopted b y your OKIF AX 740 when it is switched on) by programming function 47.
36 For this a pplica tion you will r equire a voice telephone ans wering machine to be connected on the same line. The an s wering machine may be connected via the TEL socket on your OKIF AX 740 (if a vailable in your country), or via a two-way telephone ada pter .
37 P olling Reception This f e a ture enables your OKIF AX 740 to call other f a x machines and r equest a document from them. The remote machines must, of course, be set for polling transmission. This application is useful if , for e xample, you wish to collect re ports or other documents from eac h of your branch of fices.
38 Setting P olling Reception (Function 10) T o set your OKIF AX 740 for polling re c e ption: 1. Ensur e that you ha ve set the corr ect ID code to match the remote machine(s) — see Setting the ID Code . 2 . Press [FUNCTION] [1] [0] . POLL MODE? Y/N 3.
39 Cancellation of Receiv e Polling (Function 62) When polling reception has been programmed, a polling file, containing the time and remote fax number , is set up in memory to recei v e the incoming tr ansmission. T o cancel recei ve polling, this f ile m ust be deleted .
40 Deleting a File in Memor y (Function 61) F iles stor ed in memor y occupy reduce the amount of a v aila ble memory f or other documents. It is a good idea to print them and then delete them as soon as con venient. T o delete a file: 1 . Press [FUNCTION [6] [1] .
41 Using Y our OKIF AX 740 as a Copier Y our OKIF AX 740 ma y be used as a con venience local copier . When making a single copy your original document is pr inted as it is scanned. F or multiple copies, the document is fi rst scanned into memor y and then pr inted the r equir e d number of times.
42 Printing Reports & Lists Y our OKIF AX 740 can print fi ve reports and lists: • Acti vity Repor t • User P arameter List • T elephone Number List • Recei v e Polling List • Memory File List Activity Report (Function 30) This report lists information about each transaction.
43 Receive P olling List (Function 33) This repo rt prints a list of all currently pr ogr ammed r ecei v e polling f iles. 1 . Press [FUNCTION] [3] [3] .

48 Restricted Access Y our OKIF AX 740 has a special security fe ature which you can utilise to prev ent unauthorised use. Using this feature, you can allocate a password which must be entered before anyone can dial out. T o apply passwo rd protection, two steps are requir ed: 1 .
49 User Setup (Function 47) Ma n y of the adjustments on your OKIF AX 740 can be set up to default to the settings you p re fer . T his means tha t these settings will be automatically adopted by your OKIF AX 740 eac h time you switch it on.
50 ECM T urns ECM mode (error corr ection) on or of f. ECM mode is helpful in o ver coming noisy tele phone line conditions, but does requir e the r emote machine to support the same communication standard. The user parameters are accessed in sequence.

58 4. Gently push the top of the ink cartr idge t ow ar ds the rear of the machine until its snaps free. 6. T o clean the cartridg e, use a lightl y damped, c lean, lint-free cloth to gently wipe clean the copper areas, including the contacts (1) and the ink nozzles (2) on the under side.
59 8. Place your thumb on the loading tab and your f ing er behind the top of the cartridge, then gently squeeze the tab and cartridge together until the ink cartridge snaps into place. NEW INK? Y/N 10. Press [YES] or [NO] as appropriate. 11. Run a nozzle test to chec k the pr int quality .
60 Cleaning the Ink Carrier Contacts The ink carrier contacts are located inside the ink cartridge carri e r . T o clean them it will be necessary to again remo ve the ink cartridge. 1. Remo ve the ink cart ridge (see pa ges 49-50) . 2. Use a clean dry cloth to reach into the ink carrier and wipe the contacts clean.
