30 s ❚❚ Using t he Menus 1 Select an item. 2 Selec t an option. Use the mul ti selector to navigat e the playback, shooting, movie, image pro- cessing, and setup menus. Multi selector Pre ss 1 or 3 to highlight menu items and press 2 to view options for the highlighted item.
31 s 1 Attach the st rap . The AN-N1000 strap supplied with the camera is exclusively f or use on land. Attach the strap securely to the t wo camera eyelets.
32 s 3 Insert the batter y and a memory ca rd. Undo the battery- chamber/memor y card slot cover security lock ( q ) and unlatch ( w ) and slowly open the cover ( e ).
33 s 4 Attach the special-purpose waterpr oof lens. The camera is used with special-purpose waterproof lenses that attach as shown below ( for information on att aching non-waterproof 1 NIKKOR lenses , see page 110). The lens generally used in this manual f o r illustrative purposes is a 1 NIKKOR A W 11–27.

36 s 5 T u rn the camera on. 6 Choose a language. Press the powe r switch to turn t he camera on. The power lamp will briefly light green and the monitor will t u r n o n . B e s u r e t o r e m o v e t h e l e n s cap before shooting. A Tur n i n g t h e C am e r a O f f T o turn the camera off, press the po wer switch again.
37 s 7 Set the clock. Use the multi selector and J button ( 0 22) to set the time and dat e. Note that the c amera us es a 24-hour clock. Press 4 or 2 to hi ghlight time zone and press J . Pres s 1 or 3 to highlight date format and press J . Press 1 or 3 to highligh t dayligh t saving time option and press J .
38 s 8 Read the instruc tions on keeping your camera watertight. Once the clock is set, the camera will display a series of messages on main- taining a watertight seal, which y ou are encouraged to read before using the camera for the first time. P ress 4 or 2 to scroll through the messages.
39 s 9 Check the batter y level and memory card capacity. Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining in the moni- tor ( 0 24). Battery level Exposures rem aining.

41 z 3 Ready the camera. 4 Frame the photograph. Hold the camera securely with both hands, bei ng carefu l not to obstr uct the lens, AF-assist illumin ator , or microphone . Rotate the camera as shown a t lowe r right when ta king pic- tures in “tall” (portrait) orientation.
42 z 5 Focus . Pr ess the shutter-release button halfway to focus. If the subject is poor ly lit, the AF-assist illuminator ( 0 21) may light to assist the focus operation. I f t h e ca m e ra i s a b l e t o f o c us , the selec ted focus area will be highlighted in green and a beep will sound (a beep may not sound if the subject is moving).
43 z 6 Shoot. Smoothly press the shutter- releas e butt on the re st of the way down t o release the shutter and r ecord the photograph. The memory card access lamp will light and the photograph will .

46 z A Fac e Pr i or it y The camera detects and focuses on portrait subjects (face priority). A double ye llow bor- der will be displayed if a por trait subject is detected facing the camera (if multiple faces, up to a maximum of five , are detected, the camera will select the closest subject).
47 z Live Image Control Live image con trols let you adjust set- tings without leaving the shooting dis- play , allowing y ou to preview ho w the changes will affect your photographs. T o view the liv e image contro ls available in auto mode, press 1 ( & ).

50 z Choosing a Mode That Matches the Subject or Situation Choose a creative mode acc ording to the subject or situation: Opti on Description Programmed auto (P) The camera sets shutter speed and aperture for opti- mal exposure ( 0 52). Recommended for snapshots and in other situations in which there is little time to adjust camera settings.
51 z Night por trait ( o ) Capture backgr ound lighting in portraits taken at night or under low light. Each time the shutter- release button is fully pressed , the camera takes a series of shots, some with the flash and some with- out, and combines them; during processing, a mes- sage is displayed and no pictures can be taken.
52 z T aking P hotos in P , S , A , and M Modes P , S , A , and M modes offer varying degrees of control ov er shutter speed and aperture . Choose a mo de and adju st settin gs acco rd- ing to your creative intent.
53 z ❚❚ S Shutter-Priority Auto In shutter-pr iority auto, you choose the shutter speed while the camera automatically selec ts the aper ture that will produce the optimal exposure . Use slow shutter speeds to suggest motion by blurring moving subjec ts, fast shutter speeds to “freeze” motion.
54 z ❚❚ A Aper ture -Priority Au to In aper ture-pr iority auto, you choose the aperture while the camera automatically selec ts the shutter speed that will produce the o ptim al exp osure. Large aper ture s (low f-nu mbers) reduc e depth of field, blurring objects behind and in front of the main subject.
55 z ❚❚ MM a n u a l In manua l mode, you control both shutter speed a nd aper ture. Choosing Shutt er Speed and Aperture Adjust shutter speed and aperture with refer ence to the exposure indicat or (see below). Pr ess 2 to highlight shutter speed or apertur e and use the X and W buttons to choose a value, then repeat f or the remaining item.
56 z A The Exposure Indicator When shutter spe eds other than “Bulb ” ar e selected, the exposur e indicator show s whether the photograph would be under- or over-exposed at current settings.
57 z Backlighting The method used to ca pture details in shaded areas of back-lit subjects depends on the option selec ted f or HDR in the shoot- ing men u ( 0 99). On Details in highlights and shadow s are preser ved using HDR (high dynamic range); Z appears in the display.
58 z Easy Panora ma Follow the steps below to shoot panoramas. During shooting, the camera focuses using aut o-area AF ; face detection is not available. Exposur e compensation can be used, but the built-in flash will not fire. 1 Set focu s an d expo sure.
59 z An example of how to pan the camera is shown below . With- out changing your position, pan the camera in a steady curve either horiz ontal ly or vertically .
60 z ❚❚ Viewing Panoramas Pa noramas can be viewed b y pressing J w h e n a p a n o r a m a i s displayed full frame ( 0 44). The star t of the panorama will be display ed with the smalles t dimension filling the disp lay and the camera will then scroll through the picture in the original pan direction.

62 P • Do not expo se the camera to water co lder than 0 °C (32 °F) or warmer than 40 ° C (104 °F). Do not take into hot sp rings or baths. • Do not dive into the wat er with th e camera, drop it, place it under heavy objects, or otherwise subject it to violent shocks or exc es- sive physical pr essure or for ce.
63 P Have you inserted th e battery a nd memory card ( 0 32)? T o pr event water entry and other damage, remov e any sand , dust, hair , and foreign objects from under the c onnector and batte ry- cha.

73 P T o prevent water falling into the camera when the cov ers are opened, hold the camera so that the co vers open down- wards. 7 Remov e the lens . The O-Ring The camera uses an O -ring to form a water tight seal. Improper handling of the O-ring can produce leaks.
74 P 2 Wa s h t h e O - r i n g . W ash the O -ring thoroughly in f resh water and dr y thor- oughly . Do not use benzene, thinner , alcohol, soap, neutral detergents, or other cleaning products, as these could dam- age or weaken the O-ring. 3 Insp ect t he O- rin g.
75 P 6 Re -inser t the O-ring. After making sure that O-ring and guide are free of f oreign objects, place the O-ring so that it runs evenly at the same level all the way round the O- ring guide, without undue stretching and without prot ruding from the guide.
76 P D Maintenance Observe the following pr ecautions when cleaning the camera and lens after under water use. • Never remove the lens or open the connector or battery-chamber/ memory card slot cover under wate r.
77 y y Recording and Vie wing Movies The camera can r ecord h igh- d efinition (HD) movies with an aspect ratio of 16 : 9 and slow-motion movies with an aspect ratio of 8 : 3. Mo vie record ing is available in the shooting modes listed below (movie r ecording is not a vailable in best moment capture and Motion Snapshot modes).

80 y T aking Photographs During HD Movie R ecording Press the shutter-r elea se button all the way down to take a photograph without interrupting HD movie recor ding. Photo- graphs taken during movie recording have an aspect r atio of 3 : 2. A T aking Photographs During Movie Recording Up to 20 photog raphs can be taken with each movie shot.

86 y D Recording Movies Flicker , banding, or distortion may be visible in the display and in the final movie under fluorescent, mercury vapor , or sodium lamps or if the camera is panned horizontally.
87 t t More on Photograph y This section des cribes other f e atures you can use when taking pictures. In continuous (burst) mode, the camera takes pictures while the shutter-release button is pressed all the way down. 1 Display r elease mode o ptions.
88 t D Continuous Mode The maximum number of shots that ca n be taken in a single burst var- ies with the release mode. At frame rates of 30 and 60 fps, the maxi- mum number of shots that can be taken in a single burst is 20.
89 t The self-timer is used to delay shutter release until 10, 5, or 2 sec- onds after the shutter-release button is pressed all the way down. 1 Display r elease mode o ptions. 2 Select the desir ed self-ti mer option . 3 Mount the camera on a tripod.
90 t Note that th e timer may not star t or a photograph may not be taken if the camera is unable to focus or in other situations in which the shutter can no t be released .

The flash fires with every shot, but before it fires , the red-eye reduction lamp lights t o h e l p r e d u c e “ r e d - e y e .
93 t D Raising the Flash When using the flash, be sure it is fully raised as shown at right. Do not touch the flash dur- ing shooting. A Lowering the Built-in Flash T o s a v e p o w e r w h e n t h e f l a s h i s n o t i n u s e , press it gently downward until the latch clicks into place.
94 t A Using the Built- in Flash The built-in flash can not be used with live image control ( 0 47 ) and will not fire during c ontinuous shooting at frame advance rate s faster than 5 fps ( 0 87) or when On is selected for HDR in the shooting menu ( 0 57).
