14 First Steps First Steps Inser ting the Battery Insert a Rechargeable Li -ion Battery EN-EL12 (supplied) into the camera. • Charge the battery before first use or when the battery is runni ng low ( A 16). 1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
15 Inserting the Battery First Steps Removing the Battery Turn the camera off ( A 19) and confirm th at the power-on lamp and the monitor are off before opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. To eject the battery, open the bat tery-chamber/ memory card slot cover and slide the orange battery latch in the direction shown ( 1 ).
16 First Steps Charging the Batter y Charge the supplied Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL12 inserted into the camera, by connecting the suppli ed Charging AC Adapter EH-68P to the camera via the supplied USB Cable UC-E6, and th en plugging the Charging AC Adapter into an electrical outlet.
17 Charging the Battery First Steps 4 Plug the Charging AC Adapter into an electrical outlet. • The camera’s charge lamp slowly blinks green to indicate that the battery is charging. • About 4 hours are requ ired to charge a f ully exhausted battery.
18 Charging t he Batte ry First Steps B Notes on Charging AC Adapter • Do not use the Charging AC Adapter EH-68P with any device th at is not supported. • Be sure to read and follow the warni ngs and cautions of “For Your Safety” ( A ii) thoroughly before using the EH-68P.
19 Charging the Battery First Steps Turning On and Off the Camera Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) will light for a moment and the monitor will turn on. Press the power switch again to turn off the camer a. When the camera turns off, both the power-on lamp and moni tor will tu rn off.
20 First Steps Setting Display Language , Date and T ime A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. 1 Press the power switch to turn on the camera. • The power-on lamp (gr een) will light for a moment and the monitor will turn on.

25 Step 1 Turn the Camera On and Sel ect A (Auto) Mode Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Indicators Displayed in A (Auto) Mode The indicators and photo info displayed during shooting and playback will turn off after a few seconds ( A 123).
26 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 2 F rame a Picture 1 Ready the camera. • Hold the cam era steadily in both hands. Keep your fingers, hair, strap and othe r objects away from the lens, flash, AF-assist il lu minator, microphone and speaker.
27 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the Zoom Rotate the zoom control to activate optical zoom. Rotate in the direction of g to zoom in on the subject. Or rotate in the dir ection of f to have a wider view. A zoom indicator is displayed at the top of the monitor when the zoom control is ro tated.
28 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 3 F ocus and Shoot 1 Press the shutter-release button halfway. • The camera focuse s when the shutt er-release butto n is pressed halfway ( A 13). • Camera automa tically selects the focus area (up to nine areas) containing the subje ct closest to the ca mera.

32 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the F lash The flash has a range of about 0.5 to 8.0 m (1 ft. 8 in. to 26 ft.) when the camera is zoomed out all the way. With maximum op ti cal zoom applied, the range is about 0.5 to 4.0 m (1 ft. 8 in.
33 Using the Flash Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode B Shooting When Lighting is Poor and When the F lash is Disabled ( W ) • Use of a tripod is recommended to stabili ze the camera during shooting an d avoid the effects of camera shake.
34 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode T aking Pic tures with the Self- T imer The camera is equipped with a ten-s econd and two-second timer for self-portraits. When using the self-timer, use of a tripod is recommended. Set Vibration reduction ( A 125) to Off in the setup menu ( A 116) when using a tripod.
35 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Macro Mode Macro m ode is use d for taki ng pictures of ob jects as close as 2 cm (0 .8 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light the entire subject at distances of less than 50 cm (1 ft. 7 in.). 1 Press p (macro mode).
36 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Exposure C ompensation Exposure compensation is used to alter the e xposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. 1 Press o (exposure compensation). • The exposure compensat ion guide and histogram are displayed.

Set Vibration reduction ( A 125) in the setup menu ( A 116) to Off when using a tripod to stabilize the camera during shoo ting.

75 Editing Pictures More on Playback/In-Camera Editing Creating a Cropped Copy: Crop Create a copy containing only the portion visi ble in the monitor when u is displayed with playback zoom ( A 60) enabled. Cropped copies are stored as separate files.
76 Movies Movies Recor ding Movies To shoot movies with s ound recorded via the built-in micropho ne, select shooting mode and follow the steps below. 1 Display the shooting-mode selection menu by pressing the A button in shooting mode, use the rotary multi selector to select D , and then press the k button.
77 Movies The Movie Menu Movie options and Autofocus mode ( A 77) settings can be cha nged in the movie menu. Press the d button in movi e mode to display the movie menu and use the rotary multi selector to modify and apply settings. D Selecting Movie Options The movie menu offers the options shown below.
