14 First Steps Setting Display Language , Date and T i me A language-selection dialog and date menu are displayed the first time the camera is turned on. 1 Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) wi ll light for a moment and the monitor will tu rn on.

21 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode Digital Zoom W h e n t h e c a m e r a i s z o o m e d i n t o t h e maximum magnification (3×), holding down g ( i ) triggers digital zoom. The subject is magni fied up to 4×, for a total magnification of 12×.
22 Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode Step 3 F ocus and Shoot 1 Press the shutter-release button halfway. When people's faces (front view) are recognized: Camera will focus on t he face surrounded by a double border. Once focus has be en locked the double bo rder will glow green.

26 Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode Using the F lash The flash has a range of 0.5-7.7 m (19.7 in.-25 ft. 3.1 in.) when the camera is zoomed out all the w ay. With maximum optical zoom applied, the range is 0.5-4.5 m (19.7 in.-14 ft. 9.1 in.
27 Using the Flash Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode B The W (Off) Indicator Note the following when lighting is poor and the flash is off ( W ): • Place the camera on a flat, level su rface or use a tripod (recommended). • The E symbol is displa yed when the camera automati cally increases se nsitivity.

29 Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode Macro Mode Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as clo se as 15 cm (5.9 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light enti re subject at distances of less than 50 cm (19.7 in.). 1 Press p (macro mode).
30 Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode Exposure C ompensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. 1 Press o (exposure compensation). The exposure compensa tion guide is displayed.
31 Auto Mode Auto Mode Shooting in the Auto Mode In the A (auto) mode, you can set image mode, w hite balance, continuous shooting and color opti ons in the shooting menu , and take pictures. 1 Press the shooting mode button in shooting mode. The shooting-mode selection menu will be displayed.

41 More on Play back T aking a Closer L ook: Pla yback Zoom Pressing g ( i ) during full-frame playback mode ( A 24) zooms the current picture in 3×, with the center of the picture displayed in the monitor. • The guide displayed in the right bottom in the monitor will show which part of the image is currentl y displayed.
42 More on Play back Editing Pic tures Use the COOLPIX L18/ COOLPIX L16 to edit pictures in-camera and st ore them as separa te files ( A 92). The editing features described below are available. C Picture Editing • Pictures taken at an image mode setting of 16:9 ( A 63) can not be edited.
43 Editing Pictures More on Play back Enhancing Brightness and Contrast: D-Lighting D-Lighting can be used to create copies with enhanced brightness and contrast, brightening dark portions of a picture.
44 Editing Pictures More on Play back Creating a Cropped Copy: Crop This function is only available when u is displayed in the monit or with playbac k zoom ( A 41) enabled. Cropped copies are stor ed as separate files. 1 Press g ( i ) in full-frame playback mode to zoom in on the image.
45 Editing Pictures More on Play back g Resizing Pictures: Small Picture Create a small copy of the cu rrent picture. Small copies are stored as JPEG files with a compression ratio of 1:16. 46 Movies Movies Recor ding Movies To shoot movies with s ound recorded via the built-in micropho ne, select shooting mode and follow the steps below. 1 Press the shooting mode button in shooting mode to display the shooting-mode selection menu and use the multi se lector to choose D and press k .
47 Movies The Movie Menu Movie options setting can be changed from the movie menu. Press d in movie mode to display the movie menu and us e the multi selector to modify and apply settings. Selecting Movie Options The movie menu offers the options shown below.
48 Movies Movie Pla yback In full-frame playback mode ( A 24), movies are recognized by the movie options ( A 47) icon. To play a movie, display it in full-frame playback mo de and press k . Use the zoom buttons to adjust playback volume. Playback controls appear at the top of the monitor.

50 Connecting to Televisions, Computers and Printe rs Connecting to a Computer When the camera is connected to a co mputer using the supp lied USB cable, pictures recorded with the camera can be copied (transferred) to the computer for storage u sing the Niko n Transf er software .

If any setting other than Single is applied, flash mode is set to off. Focus, exposure and white balance are fixe d at th e values for the first picture in each series.

For time differences not listed below, set the camera clock to local time ( A 14, 77). The table contains some locations that are no t displayed on the camera’s time zone map.

Auto (defaul t setting) AF-assist illumination will be u sed to assist the focus opera tion when the subject is poorly lit.

91 Technical Notes Technical Notes Optional A cc essories Approved Memory Cards The following memory cards have been tested and approved for use i n the COOLPIX L18/COOLPIX L16. All cards of the designated make and ca pacity can be used, regardless of speed.
