First Steps 9 Fi rst S teps Charging the Ba tter y The camera uses a rechar geable EN-EL5 Li-ion batt er y (supplied). Char ge the batter y with the supplied MH-61 batter y charger bef ore first use or when the batter y is runnin g low . 1 Plug the char ger in Connect the power cable to the charger ( c ) and then plug it into a po wer outlet ( d ).

First Steps 11 Removing the Ba tter y T urn the camer a off be fore removi ng or i ns er t ing batteries. T o eject the batter y , open the batter y- chamber/mem or y card slot co ver and slide the bat- ter y latch in the di rection shown. The batter y can then be remov ed by hand.

T o turn the camer a off , press the power switch again. P ress and hold the G button to turn the camer a on in playback mode ( B 22).

C Vibra tion Reduct ion When vibration r educ tion is on (the default setting), the camera co mpensates f or slight hand moveme nts that can blur pi ct ures at slow shutter speeds or high zoom ratios .

When tak ing pi ctures in por t rait orientation with the camera rotated 90 °, hold the cam- era with the flash upper most.

The AF-assist illuminator ma y light or the flash may fire if the subject is poorly lit ( B 24 – 25).

Scene Mode 29 S cene Mode The camera off ers a choice of six teen sc enes . Camera settings are automatically optimized f or the selected subject type.
30 Scene Mode The f ollowing scenes ar e av ailable: K Fa c e - P r i o r i t y A F F rame portrait shots of from one to thr ee subjects from the wai st up ( B 34). The camer a automatically detec ts and focuses on the faces of the subjects. • Digital zoom is not available.
