7 s The Electronic Viewfinder Use the viewfinder when bright ambient lighting conditions make it difficult to see the display in the monitor . The view- finder display turns on w hen you p ut your eye to the viewfinder and is identical to that shown on page 4; the monit or turns off automatically .
z 8 z Still Image Mode Still image mode is the mode generally used f or taking photos. 1 Select still image mode. T aking Photos in Still Image Mode Rotate the mode dial to C . Mode dial A Automatic Scene Selection ( h S cene auto selector) At default settings, the camera will auto- matically analyze the subject and select the appropriate scene .
9 z 2 Ready the camera. 3 Frame the photograph. Remove the lens cap and hold the camera securely with both hands , being careful not to obstruc t the lens, AF-assist illuminator , or microphone. Rotate the camera as shown at lower right when taking pictures in “tall” (por trait) orientation.
10 z 4 Focus . Press the shutter-r elease button half- way to focus. If th e subject is poorl y lit, the AF-assist illuminator ( 0 2) ma y light to assist the focus operation. I f t h e c am e r a i s a b l e t o f oc u s , the selected focus area will be highlighted in green and a beep will sound (a beep may not sound if the subject is moving).
11 z A Fac e - P ri o ri t y AF The camera detects and focuses on portrait subjects (face-prior ity AF). A doubl e yellow border will be displayed if a p ortrait subject is detected facing the camera (if multiple faces , up to a maximum of five, are detected, the camera will s elect the closest subject).
12 z A Usin g a Zoo m Len s Use the z oom ring to zoom in on t he subject so tha t it fills a la rger ar ea of the frame, or z oom out to incr ease the area vis ible in the final photo- graph (select longer focal lengths on the lens focal length scale to zoom in, shor ter focal lengths to zoom out).
13 z ❚❚ Choosing a Shutter T ype T o choose the shut ter type for still image mode, pr ess & and use the multi selector and J button to choose from the follow- ing shutter types ( 0 40): mecha.

15 z Deletin g Pictures T o delete the current picture, press O . A confirmation dialog will be display ed; press O again to delete the picture and return to playback, or press K to exi t without deleting the picture. Note that once deleted , pictures can not be recovered .
8 16 8 Smar t Photo Selec tor Mode Choose Smart Photo Selector mode for ph otos that captur e a fleeting expression on the face o f a portrait subjec t or other hard-to-time shots such as group photos in par ty scenes.
17 8 3 Begin buffering photographs. Press the shutter-re lease button half- way to focus ( 0 10). An icon will be displayed as the camera begins recording images to the memor y buffer .
18 8 4 Shoot. Smoothly pr ess the shutt er-relea se button the r est of the way down. The camera will compare shots rec orded to the buffer both before and after the shutter-r elease button was pr essed, and select five to copy to the memor y card. Note that some time ma y be required .

9 30 9 Motion Snapshot Mode Choose Motion Snapshot mode to recor d brief movie vignettes with your photo graphs. Each time the shutter is released, the camera records a still image and about a second of movie foot- age.
31 9 3 Begin buffering. 4 Shoot. Smoothly press the shutter-release button t he res t of the way d own. T he came ra wi ll reco rd a ph otograp h, together with ab out a second of movie footage beginning bef ore and ending after the time the shutter- release button was pressed.

A confirmation dialog will be display ed; press O again to de lete the photo and movie and return t o play- back, or pre ss K to exit without deleting the file . Note that once deleted, Motion Snapshots can not be recov ered .
t 34 t More on Photograph y The self-timer and optional ML -L3 remote contr ol ( 0 45) can be used to reduce camera shake or for self-portraits. The following options are available: 1 Mount the camera on a tripod. Mount the camera on a tripod or place the camera on a sta- ble, level surf ace.
35 t 3 Select the desir ed option. 4 Frame the photograph and shoot. Self- timer m ode : P ress the shutt er- release button halfway to focus , and then press the button the rest of the way down . The self-timer lamp will star t to blink and a beep will begin to sound.

When mounted on the Nikon 1 V1, it su pports i-TTL and manual flash control. A Guide Number T o calculate the range of th e flash at full po wer , divide the Guide Number by the aperture .
45 n Remote controls ( 0 34) Wireless Remote Control ML -L3 : The ML -L3 u ses a 3 V CR2025 battery. Pressing the battery- chamber latch to the right ( q ), insert a fingernail into the gap and open the batter y chamber ( w ). Ensure that the battery is in the correct orientation ( r ).
46 n Tri p od adapters Trip od Adapter T A-N100 : P rev ents large le nses from coming into contact with the tripod head when the camera is mounted on a tripod.
47 n Approv ed Mem ory Card s The following car ds hav e been tested and appro ved for use in the camera. Cards with class 6 or faster writ e speeds are recom- mended for mo vie record ing. Recor ding may end unexpectedly when cards with slower write speeds are used.
48 n Attaching a Pow er Connector and AC Adapter T urn the camera off before attaching an option al power connec- tor and AC adapter . 1 Ready the camera. Open the battery-chamber ( q ) and power connector ( w ) c overs . 2 Inser t the EP-5B power c onnector .
49 n 4 Connect the AC adapter . Connect the AC adapter power cable to the A C socket on AC adapter ( e ) and the EP-5B po wer cable to the DC socket ( r ). A P icon is displayed in the monitor when the camera is powered by the AC adapter and po wer connector .

53 n Do not drop : The pr oduct may malfunc- tion if subjec ted to strong shocks or vibration. Keep dry : This product is not water- proof , and may malfunction if immersed in water or exposed to high levels of humidity . Rusting of the internal mech anism can cause irreparable damage.
54 n Cleaning : When cleaning the camera body , use a blower to gently remove dust and lint , then wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. After using the camera at the beach or seaside, wipe off any sand or salt using a cloth light ly dampened in pure water and then dr y the camera t horoughly.
55 n Lines : Noise in the form of lines may in rare cases appe ar in pictures of extremely bright or backlit subjects . Batteries : Batteries ma y leak or explode if improperly handled. Observe the following precautions when handling batterie s: • Use only batt eries appro ved fo r use in this equipment.
56 n • Do not use the battery at ambient temperatures belo w 0 °C/32 °F or above 40 °C/104 °F; failure to observe this precaution could dam- age the battery or impai r its per for- mance.

59 n Shooting (All Exposure Modes) Movies The camera takes t ime to turn on : Delete files or format the memor y card. The shutter-release is disabled : • The battery is exhausted. • The memory card is locked or full. • The camera is not in focus.
