1 About This Manual This manua l provides a comp rehensive use r’s guide and installation manual for A DSL USB modems. It has been organized in such a way to make it easy to follow by users worldwide.

3 Chapter 1: Overview About ADSL Asymmetr ic Digital Subscrib er Line (ADSL) t e chnolog y provide s hig h-speed da ta access a cross regular phone lines (co pper wire s) by making use of previous ly unused freq uency bandwidth above the voice band.
4 Features The ADSL USB Modem provides the following features: • Compliant with Universal Serial Bus Spec ification Revision 1 .1 • US B bu s- powe red ; an ex tern al power supply is not required • Compatible with all T1.
5 Chapter 2: ADSL USB Modem Installation and Software Setup Be sure to follow the instructions pr ov ided for your PC’s operating system. The following information may be required for so ftware installation. Co ntact you r DSL service provider before proceeding wi th software installation.
6 Modem Installation 1. Insert the rectangu lar end of the USB cable into the USB por t of your P C . 2. Insert the square end of the U SB cable into the USB port of the Alcatel ADSL USB Modem. Software Setup Note: For Windows 98/98SE applications, you may need the Windows 98/98SE CD ROM to com plete the installatio n.
7 2. Insert the Drivers CD into the CD-ROM drive and double click Setup.exe to start the installation procedure. A notificati on m essage will appear indicating that the se tup process has begun. 3. Setup program will auto matically detects your windows syste m’s language version, then displays corresponding la nguage scr een.

9 Chapter 3: ADSL Control and Status ACCESSING CSA The User Interf ace to t he ADSL Modem is provided by the Control and Status Application (CSA). Y ou ca n access t he C SA by double -clicki ng on t he CSA icon in t he System T ray , loca ted near the clock on the task bar .
10 CSA USER SCREEN Modem Perfor mance The Modem P erformance displays performance information. The primary purpose is to display the instantaneous throughput rate f or both transmit and receive path s of the modem. Th is rate is calculated based on the poll period (generally 2 seconds) and the num b er of bytes passed during that time.
11 • ADSL Modem not available Connect/ Disconnect Button The CO NNEC T/ DIS CON NEC T bu tton p er form s t h e connection/disconne ction o peration. If the ADSL Modem is unav ailable, the button is disabled. T his occurs when the ADSL modem driver is disabled or fails to communica te correctly .
12 Chapter 4: Uninstall Software Remove the ADSL Modem drivers by performi ng the f ollowing steps. Note: The USB cabl e sho uld not be unplu gged un til after the unins tall process has been c ompleted. 14 4. The “Gateway ” tab allows you to add or remove gateways. Consult with your network administrator to determine the appropriate addresses for your individual needs. $ To add a new gateway, type the address in the new gateway field and click Add .

29 Appendix B: Connector Pin-out The ADSL modem is equipped with a RJ-11 jack f or connection to the ADSL data port. The center two pins, pi ns 2 and 3, are used for ADSL data. F or the modem to make a proper ADSL connection, the installed ADSL data port should also use pins 2 and 3 for data.

31 Appendix D: Abbreviations AAL A TM Adaptation Layer . A function performed during A TM cell processing to adapt traditional IP or Eth ernet traf f i c for tr ansmission through an A TM network. ADSL Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. A method for modulating data to achieve high bit rates ov er common twisted-pair copper wire.
32 VCI Virtual Circuit Identif ier . A 1 6-bit value that is included in an A TM cell header to identify the destination virtual circuit. VPI Virtual P ath Identif ier . An 8-bit value that is included in an A TM cell header to identify the destination virtual path.
