2 I NSTALLING THE S WITCH This chapter contains the informat ion you need to install and set up the Switch 4400. It covers the follo wing topics: ■ Package Contents ■ Choosing a Suitable Site ■ Rack-mounting ■ Placing Units On T op of Each Other ■ The Power -up Sequence WARNING: Safety Information.
20 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH Package Contents ■ Switch 4400 ( 24-port) (3C17203) or Sw itch 4400 ( 48-port) (3C17204) ■ CD-ROM ■ Getting Started Guide (this gu ide) ■ Implementation .
Rack-mount ing 21 If the Switch is installed in a 19-inch rack or closed assembly its local air temperature may be greater th an room ambient temperature. ■ The air is as free fr om dust as possible. ■ The unit is installed in a clean, air conditioned environment.
22 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH Y ou must use the screws supplied with th e mounting brackets. Damage caused to the unit by using incorrect screws invalidates your warranty . 4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other side of the Switch. 5 Insert the Switch into the 19-in ch rack and secure with suitable screws (not provided).
The Power-up Sequence 23 Using the Expansion Module slot at the rear of the Switch, you can stack Switch units together in two ways: ■ The SuperStack 3 Switch Cascade Stacking Kit (3C1722 7) consists of two Cascade Modules and a Cascade Cable. This kit allows you to connect two Switch 4400 units together .

3 S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT Y our Switch can operate in its default state, that is, you can install it and it will work straight away (plu g-and-play). However , to make full use of the features of fered by the Switch, and to change and monitor the way it works, you have to access the management sof twar e that resides on the Switch.
28 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT Setting Up Overview This section gives an overview of what you need to do to get your Switch set up and ready for management when it is in its default state. Detailed procedural steps ar e contained in the sections that follow .
Setting Up Overview 29 Automatic IP Configuration By default the Switch tries to configure itself with IP information without requesting user intervention. It tries to obtain an IP address fr om a DHCP or BootP server on the network. If neither server is found, the Switch w ill configure itself with an IP address in the range 169.
30 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT Pr eparing for Management Once your Switch ’ s initial set up is complete you can set up your chosen management method as described in “ Methods of Managing a Switch ” on page 39.
Manual Setup 31 Manual Setup Y ou can set up a Switch manually in the following ways: ■ Connecting to a front panel port — Connect a workstation using an Ether net cable to a front panel port of the Switch. Y ou can then manually enter IP information using the web interface.
32 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT T o connect the c able: a Attach an RJ-45 connector at one end of the Eth ernet cable to the Network Interface Card (NIC) in the workstation. b Connect the RJ-45 connector at the other end of the c able to one of the front panel ports on the Switch.
Manual Setup 33 Connecting to the Console Port T o set up your Switch manually you can alter natively make a con nection to the console port (this example describes a local connection to the console port, rather than a remote one via a modem).
34 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT b T ighten the retaining scr ews on the cable to pr event it from being loosened. c Connect the other end of the cable to one of the serial por ts (also known as a COM port) on your works tation.
Manual Setup 35 Figure 7 Example top-level command line interface menu 3 At the Select menu option prompt enter the protocol ip basicConfig command. At the Enter configuration method prompt enter manual . The scre en prompts you to enter IP information.
36 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT Automatic Setup Y ou can set up the Switch automatically whilst it is connected to a network in either of the following ways: ■ Using 3Com Network Supervisor — This application will auto-discover the Switch and display the automatically allocated IP information assigned to the Switch.
Automatic Setup 37 ■ As u i t a b l ec a b l e : ■ A standard null modem cable — if yo u are connecting directly to the console port, or ■ A standard modem cable — if you are connecting to the co nsole port using a modem. Y ou can find pin-out diag rams for both cables in Appendix B on pag e 57 .
38 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT Viewing IP Information via the Console Port Y ou a r e now ready to view the automatically allocated IP information using the command line interface. 1 Connect your Switch to the network using an Ether net cable.
Methods of Managing a Switc h 39 The initial set up of your Switch is now complet e and the Switch is ready for you to set up your chosen management method.
40 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT Web I nt e rf a ce Management Each Switch has an internal set of web pages that allow you to manage the Switch using a We b br owser re motely over an IP network (see Figure 12). Figure 12 Web interface management over the network Refer to “ Setting Up Web Interface Management ” on page 42.
Setting Up Command Line Interface Management 41 Setting Up Command Line Interface Management This section describes how you can set up command line interface management using a local console port connect ion or over the network.
42 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT If the login prompt does not display immediately , press Return a few times until it starts. 6 If you have logged on correctly , the top-level menu of the command line interface for the Switch you wish to manage is displayed as shown in F i g u r e7o np a g e3 5 .
Setting Up SNMP Management 43 If you get an error message, check that your IP information ha s been entered corr ectly and the Switch is powered up. 3 Open your web br owser and enter the IP address of the Switch that you wish to manage in the URL locator , for example, in the following format: http:// xxx.
44 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U PF O R M ANAGEMENT Default Users and Passwords I fy o ui n t e n dt om a n a g et h eS w i t c hu s i n gt h ew e bi n t e r f a c eo rt h e command line interface, or to change the default p asswor ds, you need to log in with a valid user name and passwor d.
4 P RO B L E M S OLVING This chapter helps you to diagnose and solve problems you may have with the operation of your Switch. There is also an explanation of IP addressing.
46 C HAPTER 4: P ROBLEM S OLVING Solving Problems Indicated by LEDs If the LEDs on the Switch indicate a problem, r efer to the list of suggested solutions b elow . The Power LED does not light Check that the power cable is firmly connected to the Switch and to the supply outlet.
Solving Hardware Problems 47 The Unit LED is flashing green The Switch unit phys ically forms a stack with other S witch 4400 units, but cannot be managed as part of that stack because one or more units have not been upgraded to software version 2.0 or later .
48 C HAPTER 4: P ROBLEM S OLVING Solving Communication Problems If you experience communication problems with the Switch, ensure that: ■ The Switch IP ad dr ess has been c onfigur ed as desc ribed in Ch apter 3.
Solving Communication Problems 49 How do you obtain a r egister ed IP Addr ess? The IP registration system ensur es that every IP address used is unique; if y o ud on o th a v ear e g i s t e r e dI Pa d d r e s s ,y o um a yb eu s i n ga ni d e n t i c a l address to someone else and your network will not oper ate correctly .
