AVR280 5 English Before making connections Before connecting y our equip ment it is i mportant to think abou t the follow ing points, as these w ill affect your c hoice of co nnections a nd subsequen t use of th e system. Audio Wherev er possible , connect bo th analogue and digita l outputs of digital so urces.
AVR280 6 I nsta l l a t io n Positioning the unit < Place th e receiver on a lev el, rm sur face. < Av oid placing the unit i n direct su nlight or ne ar sources of heat or damp. < Do not p lace the uni t on top o f a power am plier or o ther source of heat.
AVR280 7 English Audio connections < Wherever possible, connect both the analog ue and digi tal outputs of digital sources. Th is enables use of a digital in put for the main zone and the cor responding analogue in put for reco rding onto an anal ogue tape de ck or VCR, and for the Zone 2 output i f used.
AVR280 8 Video connections The A VR280 al lows for co nversion between di fferent vid eo formats. This means that the A VR280 can conv ert betwee n composit e, S-vi deo and comp onent, if r equired.
AVR280 9 English HDMI An HDMI connection between a s ource and y our displa y device o ffers the b est possibl e picture q uality . This con nection ty pe is, howev er , the most limiting i n terms of routing, adv ised cable length and conv ersion.

AVR280 12 Co n g u ri n g t he A V R 2 80 The A VR280 ‘S et-up M enu’ has si x ‘Basic’ a nd ve ‘ Adv anced’ m enu screens that take you thro ugh the con guratio n process. The ‘Basic’ menus enabl e you to match your AVR2 80 to your speakers ; the ‘ Adva nced’ menus allow you to optimis e the oper ation of your syst em.

AVR280 14 HQ Video : Choose be tween RGB o r YUV ; if y ou have a YUV disp lay , set this i tem to YUV , otherwise set it to RGB . Note that this setting has no effect o n the HDMI output.

AVR280 17 English The ‘Advanced’ Set-up Menus ADV 1 – Speaker E q. This all ows ne adj ustment of bass and tr eble in 1dB steps (up t o ±6dB) for each of th e speake rs in the s ystem.
AVR280 18 ADV 4 – Zone 2 Se ttings ZONE2 VOL : Sets the volume for Zone 2. Max Vol 20–83 : Limi ts the maxi mum volume setting fo r Zon e 2. This i s a useful feature to preven t accidenta l overdri ving of low power-ha ndling speak ers, for example.

AVR280 22 Input selection T o select a particular source, pr ess the cor responding button on th e front pan el or on the remote con trol. There a re eight inp uts av ailable: DV D, Sat , AV , AUX, VCR, T ape, CD a nd MCH (DVD -A mul ti-channel) . In addition , AM and FM radio reception ca n be select ed from the built-i n tuner .

AVR280 24 Using the tuner The A VR280’ s r adio tuner can be cont rolled from the upper r ow of front panel butt ons (see di agram, below) o r from the remote cont rol handset . Note that the tuner b ehaviour can be seen only via th e front - panel d isplay , as there is no on-s creen displ ay for the tuner .

AVR280 26 Main Me nu Screen 2 Compress ion : Allows selection of three di fferent comp ression r atios ( OFF , MEDIUM and HIGH ), where th e higher com pression is intended f or ‘late ni ght’ listening . The comp ression eff ect increas es the vol ume of the quiet passa ges and decrease s the vol ume of the louder passa ges.
