All of these custom design attri butes work in concert to provide smooth, quie t and consistent tran sport operatio n.

1-9 Nº51 Media Player Getting Started Installation Considerations The Nº51 Media P layer requires sp ec ial care during instal lation to ensure optimal performance. Pay parti cular attention to instruc- tions included in this sectio n and to precautions i ncluded throughout this owne r’ s manual.

DO select a dry , well-ventilated location ou t of direct sunlight. DO allow at least 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10cm) of cl earance above each component for prop er heat dissipation.
1-11 Nº51 Media Player Getting Started 2. Using a Phillips screwdriver , remove the two screws from the battery compartment cover , then remove the cover . 3. Remove the old ba tteries in the battery compartment. 4. Insert two AAA alkaline batteries.
1-12 Getting Started Mark Levinson Power Requir ements When shipped, the medi a player is configu red for 100, 120, 2 20 or 230-240V AC power operation at 50 or 6 0Hz. Before operati ng the media player , make sure the ~ac mai n s connecto r label indic ates the correct operating voltage for the current location.
1-13 Nº51 Media Player Getting Started When power returns, it is recommended to allo w the media player and other audio components to stabilize for about 2 minutes. The media player will require a brief warm-up a nd break-in peri od (not the full 300 h ours).
1-14 Getting Started Mark Levinson Discs to Avoid The Nº51 Media Player is compat ible wi th 5-inch (12 cm) and 3-inch (8 cm) conventio nal, round discs. Do no t attempt to load discs with other size and shape char acteristics. All disc s must align with one of the cir cular guid es inside the disc drawer .

3-1 Setup Menu Setup Menu The front-panel or remote-control setup button provides convenient access to the Setup menu, whi ch is used to configure Audio , Video, Disc and General media player sett ings to suit individual preferences. 3-15 Nº51 Media Player Setup Menu Digital HDMI The highest resolution that prod uces the cleanest and sharpest images over a n all-digi tal interface is achieved v ia the HDMI outp ut port. HDMI is a digital interface as well as a mode for the Nº51 Media Player .
3-16 Setup Menu Mark Levinson Analog and Component SD Interlaced Analog standard d efinition vide o has a resoluti on of 480i or 576 i, and is available on the Comp osite Video, S-Video, or Component Video (YPbPr) output ports.
3-17 Nº51 Media Player Setup Menu Film Mode In terms of sour ce video material, there are two types of DVDs— video DVD and film DVD. In video DVDs, the original sour ce video is shot using a video camera with a frame ra te of 60Hz interlaced for NTSC and 50Hz interlaced for P AL/SECAM.
3-18 Setup Menu Mark Levinson Deinterlacing Standard DVDs are normally encoded as either i nterlaced 60Hz ( i.e. 480i@60Hz for NTSC) or inte rlaced 50Hz (i. e. 576i@50Hz for P AL). Interlaced video c an display many annoy ing video artifact s, such as flickering, combing (referred to as “feathering”), etc.
3-19 Nº51 Media Player Setup Menu Noise Reduction This parameter applie s a special filter t o suppress cross-color artifacts, where high-frequenc y luma might improperly display as “false colors”. Noise Reduction shou ld only be used if cross-color artifacts are obvious.
3-20 Setup Menu Mark Levinson Edit Display Pr ofile: HDMI Out HDMI output parameters control the v ideo format when the N º51 Me di a Pl ay er is using the HDMI output connector , and the vi de o output switch (on rear panel) is set to HDMI . When the video output switch is set to HDMI, all analog video outputs are disabled.

3-29 Nº51 Media Player Setup Menu Befor e Using T est Images Before using the test images, be sure the associated di splay and any other devices in the path betwee n the Nº51 Med ia Player an d the display are in dependently calibrated.
3-30 Setup Menu Mark Levinson T e st Images (continued) “converging” at the same point, th e red, green, and blue com ponents combine exactly to produce white. When the RGB guns are misaligned, the white lines appear to have “ghosts” or “halos”, or in extreme cases, separate into individual red, green, and blue lines.

4-1 Playback Contr ols 4 Navigating Disc Menus Most discs include on-screen displa y menu s that can be used to select disc settings, control playback, or view information about the disc. The descriptions that begin below provid e a general overview o f disc menus available for each format.
4-2 Playback Controls Ma rk Levinson Disc Menu Navigation The table below provides descripti ons of remote contro l commands that can be used to navigate disc menus.
4-3 Nº51 Media Player Playback Controls Selecting Disc Settings Some disc menus can be used to selec t disc settings such as audi o track (audio language and output format), su btitle language and camera angle. In some cases, certain re mote control buttons can also be used to select these settings without navi gating thro ugh the disc menu .
4-4 Playback Controls Ma rk Levinson camera angle Some DVDs contai n multiple angles o f a particular scene. The rem ote control angle butt on opens the angle status menu, which is used to select the desired c amera angle. Camera angle selection is ava ilable for scenes recorded from multiple camera angles.
4-5 Nº51 Media Player Playback Controls zoom ratio Press ing the remo te cont rol ratio button opens the ratio statu s bar , which is used to select a video zoom ratio. When the stat us menu opens, press the ratio button again to cycle through the avail able zoom ratios.
4-6 Playback Controls Ma rk Levinson Playback Modes The media player offers a range of pl ayback mod es that can be used to control the playback of a loaded disc. The following t able indicates the playback modes availabl e for each disc format. However , these modes might not be available for a ll discs within each format .
4-7 Nº51 Media Player Playback Controls Pause The front panel and remote cont rol pause button can be us ed to activate Pause mode, which pauses playback at the current playback time. Activating Pause mode creates a st ill-frame ima ge on the assoc iated display device sc reen.
4-8 Playback Controls Ma rk Levinson T o deactivate Resume mode: •P r e s s play ( ) to deactivate Resume mod e and activ ate playback a t the current playback time. • When in Resume mode, press stop ( ) to a ctivate Stop mode. When Stop mode is activated, pla yback ca nnot be reactivated at the current playback time.
4-9 Nº51 Media Player Playback Controls T o deactivate fast search: • Press play ( ) to deactivate fas t search and act ivate regular playback speed at the c urrent playback ti me. • Press stop ( ) once to activate Resume mode or twice to activate Stop mode.
4-10 Playback Controls Ma rk Levinson Sear ch The remote control se ar ch button can be used to activate Search mode, which activates playba ck of a specific title, chapter , track or time on the loaded disc. The table on page 4-6 indicates the Sea rch modes a vailable for each disc format.
4-11 Nº51 Media Player Playback Controls • T o enter a playback time of 1 6 minutes and 20 seconds, press the number 1 button, the number 6 b utton, the number 2 butt on, then the number 0 button. • Press the remote control delete button to clear an incorre ct search value.
4-12 Playback Controls Ma rk Levinson • Press the remote control next ( )button to skip to the beginning of the next randomly selected track. T o deactivate random playback: Press random to deactivate ra ndom playback.
4-13 Nº51 Media Player Playback Controls 3. When the status bar opens, press the re p e a t button again to cycle through all Repeat modes available for the loaded disc. • If playlist playback was acti vated when the rep e a t button was pressed, repeat playlist playback is available.
4-14 Playback Controls Ma rk Levinson Playlist The remote control playlist button initiates Playlist mode which is used to create a playlist for a loaded CD, save a playlist, or act ivate the playback of an existing playlist. • A playlist is a user-def ined playback order of t racks.

When a CD is loaded, press the re mote control playlist button to initiate playlist mode. • The on-screen d isplay opens to display a split window . The left side of the split window contains a l ist of tracks that are available for adding to the playli st.

4-17 Nº51 Media Player Playback Controls Manual and Automatic Bookmarks Manual Bookmarks The remote control mark button is u sed to create a manual bo okmark at the current playback time. Later , disc playback can be started from the bookmarked playback time.
4-18 Playback Controls Ma rk Levinson T o start DVD or CD p l ayback using a manual bookmark (Option 1): 1. Load the bookmarked DVD or CD. 2. When the DVD or CD is loaded, press the rec a l l b utton to star t playback from the bookmarked playback time.
4-19 Nº51 Media Player Playback Controls Info Mode The remote control Info button is used to act ivate or deactivate an Info status bar that provides information about the loaded disc, or general status information. The type of disc-specific informat ion displayed depends on the disc fo rmat.

5-2 Troubleshooting & Maintenance Mark Levinson No Main Output 1. Examine audio ca bles to ensure a solid connection between the Nº51 and associated components. 2. Make sure master volume is set to an a udible leve l. 3. Make sure mute is deactivated.
