LDT -5525 27 APPENDIX A S TEINHART -H ART E QUATION T wo-terminal thermistors have a nonlinear relationship bet ween temperature and resistance. The resist ance verses temperat ure characteristics for a family of similar thermistors is shown in Figure A.
28 LDT -5525 CHAPTER A For the LDT -5525, the S teinhart Hart equation has been simplified to a first order polynomial: 1/T = A' + B' * ln R Equation 2 This equation is easier to solve and provid es adequate result s. T able A.1 also shows that the use of Equation 2 introduc es temperatu re errors of less than 0.
06_07 LDT -5525 29 CHAPTER A Computer Program We have in cluded a computer program called STEIN1 that uses a lea st squares curve fitting routine to dete rmine the values of C1 a nd C2. The program is written in IBM's advanced BASICA. Y ou must create a dat a file for yo ur thermistor that describes the resist ance at various temperatures.

LDT -5525 33 APPENDIX B S ENSING C URRENT AND T HERMISTOR S ELECTION Choosing the right sen sing current depends on the range o f temperature you want to measure and the resolution you require at the highest measured temp erature.
Thermistor Range 34 LDT -5525 CHAPTER B thermistor inputs o f the LDT -5525. The LDT -5525's measurement system will over-range when the input volt age exce eds about 4.5 volt s. Figure B.1 graphically shows the lower temperature a nd upper volt age limits for a typical 10 K thermistor .
Thermistor R ange 06_07 LDT -5525 35 CHAPTER B Temperature Resolution Y ou must also consider measur emen t resolution since the measureme nt resolution decreases as the the rmistor temperature increases. A temperature controller (such as the LDT -5525) has a limited measurement resolution.
Thermistor Range 36 LDT -5525 CHAPTER B generally a good choice for most laser d i ode applications where high sta bility is required near room temperatures. Similarly , 10 K thermistors are of ten a good choice for detector cooling application s where you want to operate at temperatures from -30 o C to room temperature.
LDT -5525 37 APPENDIX C AD590 AND LM335 S ENSOR C ALIBRATION The LDT -5525 T emperature Controller uses two constant s (C1 and C2) f or calibrating linear thermal sen sing devices, such as the AD590, a nd the LM335.
38 LDT -5525 CHAPTER C T d = C1 + ( C2 * T n ) - where C1 and C2 are the const ant s stored by the user in the LDT -5525 T emperature Controller for the AD590. The AD590 measurement is calibrat ed, at the factory , with C2 = 1 and C1 = 0 (nominal values).
06_07 LDT -5525 39 CHAPTER C The LDT -5525 T emperature Controller uses v to determine the nominal temperature, T n , by the formula: T n = ( v / ( 10mV / K ) ) - 273.
40 LDT -5525 CHAPTER C One Point Calibration Method This procedure will work for any linear te mperature sensor . The accuracy of this procedure depends on the accuracy of the known temperature, externally measured. It is used to dete rmine the zero of fset of the device, and it assumes that the gain of fset (slope) is known and is correct.
06_07 LDT -5525 41 CHAPTER C V = (T a1 - T a2 ) / (T d1 - T d2 ), and U = T a1 - (T d1 * V) Then C1 n and C2 n can be determined by th e following: C1 n = U + (V * C1) and C2 n = V * C2 6 Replace C1 with C1 n by selecting the C1 parameter and entering the new C1 n value.
