b Gently pull the cover and system board away from the printer, and then remove it. 2 Use the illustration below to lo cate the approp riate connector. Warning: System board electrical comp onents are ea sily damaged by static electricity. Touch something metal on the printer before touching any s ystem board electronic co m ponents or connectors.
An optional memory card can be purcha sed separately and attached to the system board. To install the memory card: 1 Access the system board. 2 Unpack the me mory card. Note: Avoid touching the connection po ints along the edge of the card. 3 Open the memory card con nector latches.

An internal print server allows con nection from the printer to the lo cal area network (LAN). An optional port interface card expands the ways the printer can co nnect to a computer or external print server. 1 Access the system board. 2 Unpack the in ternal print serv er or port interface c ard.
Note: This operation requires a #2 Phillips screwdriver. 1 Gently insert the system board into the printer. 2 Replace the co ver screws, and then turn them clockw ise. 3 Tighten the screws firmly. Attaching cables Connect the printer to the computer using a USB cable or Ethernet cable.

Loading paper and specialty media This section explains ho w to load the 520-, 850-, and 1 1 50 -sheet trays, and the multipurpose feeder. It also includes information ab out paper orientation, setting the Paper Size and Paper Type, and linking and unlinking trays.
2 Squeeze the width gui de tabs together as shown, and move the wid th guide to the correct position for the pap e r size being loaded. 3 Squeeze the length g uide tab inward as sh own, and sli de the guide to the correct position for the paper size being loaded.
Long-edge orien t ation Short-edge or ientation 6 Make sure the pape r guides are secure agai nst the edges of the pa per. 7 Align the tray, and insert it. 8 If a different type of pa per was loaded than the type previously l oaded in the tray, change the Paper Type setting for the tray fro m the control panel.
Loading the 867- and 1133-sheet trays Although the 867-sheet tray and the 1 133 -sheet tray are different in appearance, they suppo rt the same paper sizes and types and require th e same process for loading paper. Use these instructions to load paper in either tray: 1 Grasp the han dle, and op en the tray.
4 Load the paper stack with the re commended print side fa ceup. 5 Make sure the pape r guides are secure agai nst the edges of the pa per. 6 Insert the tray into the printer. 7 If a different type of pa per was loaded than the type previously l oaded in the tray, change the Paper Type setting for the tray fro m the control panel.
3 Stack height limiter 1 Pull the multipurpose feeder tray down. 2 Grasp the exte nsion, and g ently pull it out until it is fully extended. 3 Prepare the paper for loadin g. • Flex sheets of paper back and forth to loosen them, a nd then fan them. Do not fold or crease the pa per.
4 Load the pape r, and then adjust the paper guid es so that they lightly touch the edg es of the paper sta ck. • Load letter, A4, and transpare n cies with the reco mmended print side facedown and the long edge of the paper entering the printer first.
Configuring Universal paper settings The Universal Paper Size is a user-defined setting that lets you print on paper sizes that are not preset in the printer menus. Set th e Paper Size for the spec if ied tray to Universal when the size you want is not availab le from the Paper Size menu.
Changing a Custom Type <x> name You can use the Embed ded Web Server or MarkVision TM to define a name ot her than Custom Type <x> fo r each of the custom paper types that are l oaded. When a Custom Type <x> name is changed, the menus di splay the new name instead of Custom Type <x>.
Paper and specialty media guide Paper guidelines Paper characteristics The following paper characteristics affect pr int quality and re liability. Consider these char acteristics when eval uating new paper stock. Weight The printer can automatica lly feed paper weights from 60 to 220 g/m 2 (16 to 58 lb bond) grain long .
Unacceptable paper The following pape r types are not recommen ded for use with the printe r: • Chemically treated pape rs used to make copies wi thout carbon pa per, also known as carbonless papers.
Lexmark consistently tests its printers with recycled pa per (20–100% post-consumer wa ste) and a variet y of test paper from arou nd the world, using cha mber tests for diff erent temperature and humidi ty conditions.

• Use transparencies that a re 0.12–0.14 mm (4 .8–5.4 mil) in thickn ess or 161–179 g/m 2 in weight. Print quality and durability depend on the transparencies used. • To prevent print quality problems, a void getting fingerprints on the transparencies.
• Use full label sheets. Part ial sheets may cause labels to peel off during printing, resulting in a jam. Partial sheets also contaminate the printer and the ca rtridge with adhesive, and could vo id the printer and cartridge warra n ties. • Do not use labels with exposed adhesive.

Copying using the scan ner glass (flatbed) 1 Place an original do cument facedown on the scanner g lass in the upper left corne r. 2 On the home scree n, touch Copy , or use the keypad to enter the number of copies. The copy screen appears. 3 Change the co py settings as needed.
3 On the home scree n, touch Copy . 4 Touch Copy fro m , and then identify the size of the orig inal document. 5 Touch Copy to , and then touch the tray that contains letterhe ad. Note: If you do not see Letter head as an option, load letterhead in the multipurpose feeder, and then touch Multipurpose Feeder.
Copying a document that co ntains mixed paper sizes Use the ADF to copy an original docu ment that contains mixed paper sizes. Depending on the paper sizes loaded and the “Copy to” and “Copy from” settings, each copy is ei th er printed on mixed paper size s (Example 1) or scaled to fit a single paper size (Example 2).
4 From the Sides (Dup lex) area, t ouch the button that looks the way you wa nt your copies duplexed. The first number represents sides of the or iginal docum ents; the second number repr esents sides of th e copy. For example, select 1-sided to 2-sided if you have 1- sided original documents and yo u want 2-side d copies.
Collating copies If you print multiple cop ies of a document, yo u can choose to print ea ch copy as a set (co llated) or to print th e copies as groups of pages (not collated). Collated Not collated By default, Collate is set to On. If you do not want to collate your copies, change the setting to Off.
Notes: • The Pap er Size must be set to Le tter, Legal, A4, o r B5 JIS. • The Copy Size must be set to 100%. 1 Load an original document faceup and short edge fi rst into the ADF or facedown on the scanner glass.
9 Load the next document faceup, sh ort-edge first into th e ADF or facedown on the scanner gl ass, and then touch Scan the Automatic Document Feede r or Scan the flatbed .
Placing an overlay message on each page An overlay message can be placed on ea ch page. The me ssag e choices are Urgen t, Confidential, Cop y, or Draft. To place a messa ge on the copies: 1 Load an original document faceup , short-edg e first into the ADF or facedown on the scanner glass.
Copy to This option opens a screen where you ca n enter the size and type of paper on which yo ur copies will be p rinted. • Touch a paper size button to select it as the “Cop y to ” setting. The copy screen appea rs with your new setting displayed.
Paper Saver This option lets you prin t two or more sheets of an original do cument together on the same pa ge. Paper Saver is also called N-up printing. Th e N stands for Number. For ex a mple, 2-up would print two pages of your document on a single page , and 4-up would print four pages o f your document on a single page.
• Color —Use this setting to copy the original document in colo r. • Gray —Use this setting to copy the original document in grayscale. Advanced Duplex This option controls whether the documents are one-side d or two-sided, what orientati on your original d ocuments have, and how your docu ments are bound.
E-mailing ADF Scanner glass Use the ADF for multiple -page documents. Use the scanner glass for single pa ges, small items (such as postcards or photos), tran sparencies, photo paper, or thin med ia (such as magazine clippings). You can use the pr inter to e-mail scanned documents to one o r more recipients.

Orientation This option tells the printer whether the o riginal document is in po rtrait or landscape orientation and then changes the Sides and Bin ding settings to matc h the original document orientation. Binding Tells the printer whether the original d ocument is bound on the long -edge or short-edge side.
• Edge Erase —Eliminates smudges or in formation around the e dges of a document. You can choose to elimina te an equal area a round all four sides o f the paper, or pi ck a particular edge. Edg e Erase will erase whatever is within the a rea selected, leaving nothing printed on that portion of the paper.

Getting the printer ready to fax The following connection me thods may not be applicable in all countries or regio n s.

If your telecommunicatio n s equipment uses a US-style (R J11) telephone line, follow these steps to connect the equipment: 1 Remove the plug from the EXT port on the back of th e printer.

Note: Do not remove the plug. If you remove it, other telecommunications devices in your home (su ch as telephones or answering machines ) may not work.
4 If you would like to use the same line for both fax an d telephone communication, connect a se cond telephone line (not provided) betwe en the telephone and t he F slot of an active telephone wall jack.
3 Remove the protective plug from the EXT port of the printer. 4 Connect the other te lephone cord to a telephone, and then plug it into the EXT port of the printer. Connecting to an answering machine Connect an answering m achine to the printer to receive both incom ing voice messages and faxes.

5 Click Fax Shortcu t Setup . 6 Type a unique name for the shortcut, and then enter the fax number. To create a multiple-number shor tcut, enter the fax numbers for the group. Note: Separate each fax number in the gr oup with a semicolon (; ). 7 Assign a shortcut number.
Using the address book Note: If the address book feature is not enabl ed, contact your syst em support person. 1 Load an original document faceup , short-edg e first into the ADF or facedown on the scanner glass.

Canceling a fax after the original documents have been scanned to memory 1 On the home scree n, touch Cancel Jobs . The Cancel Jobs screen app ears. 2 Touch the job or jobs you want to cancel. Only three jobs appea r on the screen; touch the down a r row until the job you want appears, and then touch the job you want to cance l.
Advanced Options Touching this bu tton opens a screen where you can change Delayed Send, Advanced Imagi ng, Custom Job, Transmission Log, Scan Preview, Edge Erase, and Advanced Duplex settings. • Delayed Send —Lets you send a fax at a later time or date.

Creating an FTP dest ination shortcut using the touch screen 1 On the home scree n, touch FTP . 2 Type the address of the F TP site. 3 Touch Save as Shortcut . 4 Type a unique name for the shortcut. Understanding FTP options Original Size This option opens a screen where yo u can choose the size of the documents you are goin g to copy.
Advanced Options Touching this bu tton opens a screen where you can chan ge Advanced Imaging, Custom Job, Transmission Log, Scan Preview, Edge Erase, and Darkness settings.

• JPEG —Each page of th e output is saved in a separate one-page fi le. When multiple pages are scanned, the output is a series of on e-page files. Compression This option sets the fo rmat used to compress the scann ed output file. Default Content This option tells the printe r the original document type.
• Contrast —Touch to increase t he contrast, or touch to decrease the contrast. • Shadow Detail —Touch to increase the visible detail in the shadows, or touch to decrease the visible detail in the shado ws.
Printing This chapter covers printing, printer reports, and job c ancellation. Selection and handli ng of paper and specialty media can affect how reliably documents print. For more info rmation, see "Avoiding jams" and "Storing print media.
Job type Descrip tion Confidential When you send a Confiden tial print job to the printe r, you must crea te a PIN in Print Properties. The PIN must be fo ur digits using the nu mbers 0–9. The job is held in printer memory until you enter the PIN from the control panel and choose to print or d elete the job.
3 From the radio grou p, select your job type (Confidential, Reserve, Re pea t, or Verify), and then assign a user name. For a confidentia l job, also enter a four-digit PIN. 4 On the home scree n, touch Held jobs . 5 Touch your user name. Note: A maximum of 500 results ca n be displayed for he ld jobs.
Notes: • Hi-Speed USB devices must su pport the Full-spee d standa rd. Devices supporting only USB Low-speed capabilities are not supported. • USB devices must suppor t the FAT ( File Allocation Tables ) system. Devices formatted with NTFS ( New Technology File System ) or any other file system are not supported.

Canceling a print job There are several method s for canceling a print job. The fo llowin g sections explain how to cancel a print jo b from the control panel or from a computer (dependin g on the operating system ).
Printing in black and white To print all te xt and graphics using on ly the black toner cartridge, set the printer to Black Only. Note: The printer driver is capable of overriding this setting. 1 Make sure the printe r is on and Ready app ears. 2 On the home scree n, touch .
Clearing jams Avoiding jams The following hints can help you avoid jams: • Use only recommended pa per or specialty media. For more information, see the Card Stock & Label Guide available on the Lexma rk Web site at www.lexmark.com/public ations .

Cleaning the scanner glass Clean the scanner gl ass if you encounte r print qua lity problems, such as streaks on copied or scanned images. 1 Slightly dampen a soft, lint-free cloth or paper to wel with water. 2 Open the scanner cover. 3 Wipe the scanner gla ss until it is clean and dry.
