6 Chap ter 1: The basics Using a USB cable If you ar e connecting your printer to a PC with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) cable, follow the instructions belo w . 1 Make sure your computer and prin ter are turne d off . 2 Connect the USB cable t o the port on the bac k of your computer .

19 Printer drive rs 2 Printer driver s Included with your printer is a compa ct disc (CD) containing printer dri vers and utilities for W indows 95, W indows 98, W indows NT 4.0, W indows 3.1x, Macintosh, OS/2 and DOS operating sy stems. Refer to the CD booklet for information about launching the CD pr ogram for your operating system.

23 Paper ha ndlin g 3 P aper handling Y ou r printer has two standar d paper sourc es: an automatic paper feeder , wh ich holds up to 150 sheets of plain paper and a single sheet man ual feeder . Use the automatic paper fe eder for the print jobs you do most often.
24 Chapter 3 : Paper ha ndlin g P ap er types and sizes Selecting the right paper type r educes printing pr oblems. For best prin t quality , use 20 lb (7 5 g/m2) xer ographic paper . If the paper has a pr eferr ed print side, load it with the print side faci ng you.
25 Paper types and s izes Pa p e r Load A4, A5, B5, letter head, legal and executiv e-size paper one at a time f rom the manual feeder or load up to 150 sheets in the automa tic paper feeder . Prepri nted papers such as letter head must be able to withstand temperatur es up to 190 ° C (374 ° F) without melting or r eleasing hazar dous emissions.
26 Chapter 3 : Paper ha ndlin g Load envelopes in the center of the manual feeder or automatic paper fe eder and slide the paper guides snugly against the sides of the e nvelopes. When printing on e nvelopes: • T ry a sampl e of any envelopes you are considering using with the printer bef ore buying large quanti ties.
27 Paper types and s izes • Load envelopes vertic ally , flap side down so the stamp ar ea is in the top l eft corner . • Adjust the left and rig ht paper guides to fit the width of the envelopes. Labels For occasional la bel printing, use paper labels desig ned for lase r printer s.

32 Chapter 3 : Paper ha ndlin g Cle arin g pape r jams If you get a paper jam, the Paper Jam i ndicator light pr ompts you to clear the paper path. If the paper has just s tarted to feed fr om the paper feeder when the jam occurs: 1 Pull the pa per straigh t up out of the paper feeder .
33 Clearing paper jams 5 Grasp the paper on both sides and pull the paper toward yo u. 6 Make sure ther e is no more paper in the print er . 7 Re-i nser t the p rint cartr idge . 8 Close the pr inter cover to resume print ing. Note: If the paper jam is in the fuser , tr y open ing and closin g the cover .
