Safety information Use only the power suppl y and power supp ly cord provid ed with this product or the manufacturer's authorized replacement power supply a nd power supply cord. Connect the power supply cord to a pro perly grounded el ectric al outl et that is near the product and easily accessible.
Getting the printer ready to fax CAUTION: Do not use the fax feature during a lightning storm. Do not set up this product or make any el ectrical or cabling connections, such as the power suppl y cord or telephone, during a lightning s torm.

If your telecommunicatio n s equipment uses a US-style (R J11) telephone line, follow these steps to connect the equipment: 1 Remove the plug from the EXT port on the back of the printer. Note: Once this plug is removed, any country- or region -specific equipment you connect to the printer by the adapter, as s hown, will not fu nction properly.
To connect an answer ing machine or other telecommuni cations equipment to the printer: 1 Remove the plug from the back of the printer. Note: Once this plug is removed, any country- or region -specific equipment th at you connect to the printer by the adapter, as sh own, will not function properly.
Note: Do not remove the plug. If you remove it, other telecommunications devices in your home (su ch as telephones or answering machines ) may not work. Connecting directly to a telephone wall jack Connect the printer directly to a telephone wall ja ck to ma ke copies or to send and receive faxes without using a computer.
4 If you would like to use the same line for both fax an d telephone commun ication, connect a se cond telephone line (not provided) betwe e n the telep hone and t he F slot of an active telephone wall jack.
2 Connect one telephone co rd to the LINE port of the printer, and then plug it into an active telephone wa ll jack. 3 Remove the protective plug from the EXT port of the printer. 4 Connect the other te lephone cord to a telephone, and then plug it into the EXT port of the pr inter.

Receiving a fax manually 1 Make sure the Auto A nswer light is off. 2 To receive the fax if you have not set up a manual answer co de: • Press Start Color or Start Black . or • Press * 9 * on the telephon e after you answer it and hear fax to nes.
7 Press or repeatedly until Manual Pickup Keycode appears. 8 Press . 9 Enter the code you want up to seven ch aracters. Char acters can include nu mbers or the symbols * and #.
4 Press or repeatedly until the setting you want appears. 5 Press , and follow the instructions on th e display. Use this To View View Phonebook entries. Add Create a new Speed Dial or Group Dial entry. Remove Delete a Spe ed Dial or Grou p Dial entry.
Setting the distinctive ri ng using the control panel Distinctive ring is a service pro vided by some telephone comp anies that assigns multiple phone numbers to a single telephone line. If you subscribe to this service, you can pr ogram your printe r to have a dist inctive r ing pattern a nd phone number for incoming faxes.
7 Press or repeatedly until Pick Up On appears. 8 Press . 9 Press or repeatedly until the setting you want appears. 10 Press to save the setting. 11 Make sure the Auto A nswer light is on. When the number of rings you set is de tected, th e printer automatically re ce ives the incoming fax.

Canceling a fax after a document is loaded using the control panel If you have loaded a docume nt into the Automatic Document Feeder (A DF) and the prin ter roller has started pulling it into the printer, but you have not yet initiated your fax job: 1 Pull the control pan el up.

Sending a fax Sending fax while behind a PBX If the printer is being used in a business or office, it may be connected to a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) telephone system. Ordinarily, when dialing a fax nu mber, the printer waits to recognize t he dial tone and then dials the fax number.
Customizing dial settings Adding contacts fr om the Address Book 1 From the Finder desktop, doubl e-click the Lexma rk 5000 Series folder. 2 Double-click the Fax Setup Utility icon. 3 Select the Speed Dials tab. 4 Click . 5 From the Address Book, click and drag the contact that you want to add to your printer's Spe ed Dial list.
Setting up a dialing prefix You can add a p refix to the beginning of ea ch number dialed. The prefix can in clude up to eight numbers, commas, periods, and/or these symbols: * # + - ( ). 1 From the Finder desktop, doubl e-click the Lexma rk 5000 Series folder.

From here You can Send • Select the teleph one dial method you want to use. • Enter a dialing prefix. • Select a dialing volume. • Select the number o f times you want the machine to redial and the time between those attempts if the fax ca nnot be sent on the first try.
From here You can Fax/Report Printing • Choose to reduce an incoming fax to fit to the paper s ize loaded, or pri nt it on two sheets of paper. • Choose whether to print a footer (the date, time , and page number) to appear on each page you recei ve.

Printing Getting started Using the automatic paper type sensor The printer is equipped with an automatic paper type se nsing device. The Paper Type Sensor automatically detects the type of paper that has been loaded into the printer a nd adjusts the setti ngs for you.
Loading greeting cards, index cards, photo cards, and postcards You can load up to 2 5 greeting cards, inde x cards, photo ca rds, or postcards at a time. 1 Load cards with the print side facing you. 2 Make sure: • The cards are loa ded in the center o f the paper support.
• You use full label sheets. Partial sh eets (with areas e xposed by missi ng labels) may cause labels to peel off during printing, resulting in a paper jam. • The labels are loa d ed in the center of the paper support. • The paper guides rest against the edges of the labels.
Loading banner paper You can load up to 20 shee ts of banner pape r at a time. 1 Remove all paper from the paper supp ort before loading the banner paper. 2 Tear off only the number of page s needed to print the ban ner. 3 Place the required stack of ba nne r paper behin d the printer.
Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) paper capacity Load up to Make sure 30 sheets of: • Letter-size paper • A4 paper • Legal-size pape r • The docu ment is load ed facedown.
Learning about the All-In-One software print options Choosing a paper size 1 With a documen t open, click File Page Setup . 2 From the “Format for” pop-up me nu, choose 5000 Ser ies . Note: When you select Any Printe r, your paper size choices are limited.
Collating copies us ing the computer The printer can sort multiple copy jobs. For example, if you print two copie s of a three-page document, an d you choose not to collate them, th e pages print in this order: 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3. If you choose to collate, the pag es print in this order: 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3.
Performing printing and related tasks Printing a document 1 Load paper. 2 With a documen t open, click File Print . 3 From the Printer pop-up men u, choose 5000 Se ries . 4 From the third pop-up menu from the top, select the settings you want to adjust, and adjust the settings.
Printing borderless photos From your software applicat ion, set the page margin s to zero, and then adju st the image on the screen so tha t it covers the entire page. Note: Some applications do not sup port margin setting. 1 Load photo or glossy paper, with the glossy or printable side f acing you.

Printing a banner 1 Remove all paper from the paper support. 2 Tear off only the number of pages needed for th e banner (up to 20 sheets). 3 Place the required stack of banner paper on the top cover. 4 Load only the first p age of banner paper into the pap er su pport with the leading edge of the banner going into the printer.

Load up to Make sure 30 sheets of: • Custom-size pap er • Prepunched paper • Reinforced-edge copie r paper • Preprinted forms • Letterhead pape r • Photo paper • The docu ment is load ed facedown. • The paper guid es rest against the e dges of the paper.
To add an application to the list: 1 Click + . 2 Click Br owse to navigate through the list of applications a v ailable on the computer. Click th e application that you want to add to the Available Applications list . 3 Click OK . 4 From the File Type p op-up menu, ch oose the type of file you want to send to your chosen application.
6 From the Adjustments tab: • Adjust the brightness, contrast, and gamma (color corre ction curve). Move the slid ers to adjust the levels. • Sharpen the image. Mov e the slider to adjust sharpness of your imag e. • Invert colors. Select Invert Colors to reverse the co lors of your image.
From here Go to To Adjustments tab Brightness Adjust the lightness an d darkness of the scanned image. Contrast Adju st the tone of the image as it is set off against a light or dark background. Gamma Increase or decre ase the color co rrection curve.
3 From the All-in-One Center dialog, click Preview/Edit . 4 From the dialog, select Preview . 5 Reload the photo into the ADF, and then click Cl ose on the remin der dialog. Note: Select the check box on the re minder dialog if yo u do not want the dialog to reapp ear until you reopen the application.

Scanning documents or images for e-mailing When you wa nt to scan a new item a nd send it through e-mail: 1 Load an original document facedown into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). 2 From the Finder desktop, doubl e-click the Lexma rk 5000 Series folder.
Scanning over a network Setting a network printer to scan Assigning a name to your comp uter You can assi gn a name to you r computer when you install the printer software for the first time. Choose this name when you scan an item on the network printer and want t o send the scanne d image to your computer.
6 On your keyb oard, press return . 7 From the Network All-in-One Sele ction dialog, select the printer you want to scan to your computer. 8 Click Select . 9 Repeat step 4 to step 8 for every printe r that you want to scan to your computer. 10 When finished, click Done .

• Lexmark Photo Paper —An outstanding "everyday" heavyw eight inkjet ph oto paper designed for us e with Lexmark printers, but compa t ible with all brands of inkjet p r inters. Although inexpensive, it offers excellent image quality and outstanding valu e.
Note: If the computer or printer is turned off wh ile the camera is connected , you must di sconnect and then reconnect the camera. Working with photos Note: To prevent sm udging or scratching, avoid touching the pr inted surface with you r fingers or sharp objects.

Networking the printer Networking overview A network is a collection of devices such as computer s, printers, Ethernet hubs , wireless access points, and routers connected together for communication through cables or through a wireless connection. A network can be either wired, wireless, or de signed to have both wired and wireles s devices.
Installing the printer on additional network computers If you are installing your network printer for use with multiple computers on the ne twork, insert th e i nstallation CD into each additio nal computer, and follow the instructions on the computer screen.

Use the To 3 LINE port LINE Connect the prin ter to an active tele phone line to send and receive faxes. The printer must be connected to this telepho ne line to receive incoming fax calls.

Press To 8 • Cancel a fax, print, co py, or scan job in progre ss. • Clear a fax number or end a fax transmission and return to the fax defa ult screen. • Exit a menu or submen u, and return to the default fax, copy, or scan screen. • Clear current settings or error message s, and return to default settings.
Press To 5 Start Color Start a color fax, copy, or scan, or print job, depending on which mode is selected. Understanding the Fax menu To access and navigate the Fax menu: 1 From the control panel, pr ess Fax Mode . The fax default scree n appears. 2 If you do not want to change a sett ing, ente r the fax number and press Start Color or Start Black . 3 If you want to chan ge a setting, pr ess .

Note: When you choose a value se lection, an asterisk (*) appears next to th e selected setting.
From here You can Defaults Select: • Photo Print Size to choose the size of photo(s) to print. • Set Defaults to change default settings. For more information, see “Saving settin gs” on page 103. Using the Printer Selection dialog The Printer Sele ction dialog appears in Lexmark Setup Assist ant during installation. It lists all available shared and remote pr inters co nnected to your co mputer. It also lets you select a printer you want to use.
From here Choose To Format for The name of your pr inter Format a page for printin g with the printer. Paper Size Choose a paper size from the list. Orientation Choose an orientation. Scale Reduce or enlarge a photo to a percentage of its original size.

Is there a problem with the connections? If the printer is conne cted to an external de vice, the pr oblem m ay be with the device . Check the setup information that came with the device to make sure it is properly installed.
