Networking the printer General networking Networking overview A network is a collection of devices such as computer s, printers, Ethernet hubs , wireless access points, and routers connected together for communication through cables or through a wireless connection.
Scenario 1: Laptop and printer connected wirelessly with Internet • A computer is conn ected to a wire less router by an Ethernet cable. • A laptop and a prin ter are conne cted wirelessly to the router. • The network is conn ected to the Inte rnet th rough a DSL or a cable modem.
Scenario 3: Computer, laptop, and printer connected wirelessly without Internet • A computer, a laptop, and a printer are connected wirel e ssly to a wireless access point.
Printing a network setup page A network setup page lists your network configuration settings. Note: You can print a network setup page only when an inter nal wireless print server is installed in the printer. To print a networ k setup page: 1 From the control panel of t he printer, press or repeatedly until Setup is highlighted.
A wireless network where each device communicates with others through a wire less access point (wireless router) is set up in infrastructure mode. A ll devices must have valid IP addresse s and shar e the same SSID and channel. In addition, they mu st share the same SSID and channel as the wireless access p oint (wireless rout er).
Networking the printer Installing and configuring a printer for use on a network lets users at differe nt computers print to a common printer. There are two method s for networking this printer: • Configure a wir eless network conne ction for the printe r.
Installing the printer on addi tional network computers If you are installing your network printer for use with multiple computers on the ne twork, insert th e i nstallation CD into each additio nal computer, and follow the instructions on the computer screen.
If you are us ing Do thi s All-in-One Center a From the Finder d esktop, double-click the Lexmar k 4800 Series folder. b Double-click the Lexmark 4800 Series Center icon. c From the menu, choose Advanced Network Scan Access . The Network Scan Access dia log appears.
3 Double-click Printer Setup Utili ty . The Printer List dialo g appears. 4 From the menu bar, click Add . The Printer Browser dialog appea rs. 5 Select XXXX Series <M AC:nnnnnn> , and then click Add . The Printer Browser closes, and the printer is displ ayed in the Printer List dialog.
Advanced wireless setup Creating an ad hoc wire less network using Mac The recommended way to set up your wireless network is to use a wireless access poi nt (wireless router).
Printing Getting started Loading paper 1 Make sure: • You use paper designed for inkjet printers. • If you are using photo, glossy, or heavyweight matte paper , you load it with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the printable side, see the instructions th at came with the pape r.
Loading envelopes You can load up to 10 env elopes at a time. Warning: Do not use envelop es that have metal cl asps, string ties, or metal folding bars. 1 Load envelop es in the center of the pap er support with the stamp location in the upper l eft corner.
Loading greeting cards, index cards, photo cards, and postcards You can load up to 2 5 greeting cards, inde x cards, photo card s, or postcards at a t ime. 1 Load cards with the print side facing you. 2 Make sure: • The cards are loa ded in the center o f the paper support.
Loading custom-size paper You can load up to 100 sheets of custom-size pa per at a time. 1 Load paper with the p rint side facing you. 2 Make sure: • The paper size fits within these d imensions: Width: – 76.0–216.0 mm – 3.0–8.5 inches Length: – 127.
Choosing compatible specialty paper types • Heavyweight matte pap e r —A photo p aper with a matte finish used for printing high-quality graphics. • Lexmark PerfectFinish TM Ph oto paper —A high-quality photo paper specifically desig ned for Lexmark inkjet printers, but compatible wi th a ll inkjet printers.
Choosing a print quality 1 With a documen t open, click File Print . 2 From the Printer pop-up men u, choose 4800 Se ries . 3 From the third pop-up menu from the top, choose Quality & Media . 4 From the Print Quality menu , select the appropriate print quality for the document: • Automa tic —Default selection.
Resetting All-In-One soft ware settings to defaults 1 From the Finder desktop, doubl e-click the Lexma rk 4800 Series folder. 2 Double-click the Lexmark 4800 Series Center icon.

10 Load the second page of the original document face down on the scanne r glass, and then press . 11 Repeat step 9 to step 10 until all the pages you want to cop y have been saved to the printer memory.

Editing the Customize list The list of applications in the Customize list is generated when you in stall the All-In-One software. You can expand this list to a maximum of 50 applications. You can add, remove, or m odify an application in the Customize list.
5 From the Settings tab: • Select a preset scan setting co rrespon ding to your document. • If you are not satisfied with a preset setting, custo mize the scan settings by adjusting color depth and resolution, and choosing a descreening option if you need to remove wavy patterns from images scanned from magazines or newspapers.
The Scan dialog has three ma in sections: the Setti ngs tab, the Adjustments t ab, and the Preview area . From here Go to To Settings tab Scan Settings Select a preset scan setting according to the color and document type of your scan. Note: Select Custom Settings to customize the scan setting manually instead of using a preset scan setting.
From here Go to To Adjustments tab Brightness Adjust the lightness an d darkness of the scanned image. Contrast Adju st the tone of the image as it is set off against a light or dark background. Gamma Increase or decre ase the color co rrection curve.
5 If you are satisfied with the cropped image, click . If you are not satisfied with the cropped i mage, make adjustments. a Use any of these methods to make adjust ments: • Move the slider. Note: The slider adjusts the file size, width , and heig h t of the image.
Selecting the All-In-One Center Preferences setting When scanning from the contro l panel, you have two options: • You can indicate th at you want the Scan dia log to open on the compu ter screen when you press on the control panel.
4 Press . 5 If your printer is connected to more than one computer: a Press or repeatedly un til the computer to wh ich you want to scan is highlighted. b Press . If you set a PIN during network setup and are being asked for it: 1 Enter the PIN using the and to select a digit location an d the and to select a value for that digit.

Scanning clear images from magazines or newspapers Descreening helps to remove wavy patterns from imag es scanned from maga zines or newspa pers. 1 Make sure the printer is co nnected to a compute r, and both the pr inter and the compute r are on. 2 Load an original document facedown on the scann er glass in the lower right corner.
4 From the “What is be ing scanned?” menu, se lect a document type other than Photo. 5 From the “How will the scanned im age be used?” menu, choose To be viewed on monitor/we b page . 6 From the “Send sca nned image to” menu, choose an appl ication.

Working with photos Notes: • For best results wh en printing phot os or other high-quality images, use Lexmark Photo Paper or Le xmark PerfectFinish Photo Paper. Do not use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper. Yo ur print cartridges are not compatibl e with this type of pape r.
Warning: Do not touch cables, any network a dapter, the memory card, o r the printer in the area shown while actively printing, reading, or writin g from the memory card. A loss of data ca n occur. Also, do not remove the memory card while actively printi ng, reading, or writing from it.
Note: The prin ter recognizes one active m edia device at a ti me. If you insert more than one medi a device, a message appears on the displa y prompting you to design ate the device yo u want the printer to recog n ize.
Working with photos using the control panel Note: To prevent sm udging or scratching, avoid touching the pr inted surface with you r fingers or sharp objects. For best results, re move each printed sh eet individually from th e paper exit tray, and allow the prints to dry at least 24 hours before stacking, displaying, or storing.
Printing all photos from a memory device 1 Load photo paper wi th the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is th e printable side, see the instructions that came with the paper.) 2 Insert a memory card or flash drive. 3 From the control panel, pr ess .
8 Press again. One or more proof sheets print. 9 Follow the instructions on the proof sheet to select which ph otos to print, the number of copies per photo, red - eye reduction, page layout, prin t options, and paper size. Note: When making selections, make sure to fill in the circles completely.
Notes: • Make sure the PictBrid ge-enabled digital camera is set to the correct USB mode. If the camera USB selection is incorrect, the camera will be de tected as a USB storage device, or an error me ssage will be displayed on the control panel of the printer.
7 Press or to preview the photos. 8 Press to print. Note: To prevent smudgin g or scratching, avoid touching t he printed su rface with your fingers or sharp objects. For best results, remove each printe d sheet individually from the paper e xit tray, and allow th e prints to dry at least 24 hours before stacking, d isplaying, or storing.
15 If you want to adjust the print settings: a Press . b Make your selections using the control panel bu ttons. c Press to save your selections, and then go back to the print preview scre en. 16 Press to print. Note: To prevent smudgin g or scratching, avoid touching t he printed su rface with your fingers or sharp objects.
Transferring photos from a memory device to the com puter using the control panel If the printer is connected directly to a computer, or co nnected to a computer thro ugh a wireless network connection, you can transfer photos from a me mory card or flash drive to the computer.

Continue thi s for every page you want to scan. 11 Click Do ne when you are finished scanning all items. Notes: • You can also select Prompt to name each page if you want to save each scanned item under a differen t file name.

If you are not satisfied with the cropped i mage, make adjustments. a Use any of these methods to make adjust ments: • Move the slider. Note: The slider adjusts the file size, width , and heig h t of the image. If the dashed border seems to disappear, the cro p area is set beyond the size of the image.
8 Press to preview the output . 9 Press to adjust the settings. 10 Repeat step 8 to step 9 as needed. 11 Press to save your settings temporarily. 12 Press .
Wait for the Network Ca rd Reader dialog to appear. 6 Select the images you want to save. 7 Click Save . 8 Choose the fol der where you want the selected images to be saved.

3 Choose the printer and the printer driver for your operating syst em. 4 Follow the instructions on the computer screen to do wnload the driver and install the printer softwa r e.
The Page Setup dial og appears. 2 Adjust the settings. From here Choose To Settings Page Attributes Choose a paper size, orientation, or scaling value for a photo. From here Choose To Cover Pa ge Note: This option is available only in Mac OS X version 10.4 or later. Print Cover Page Choose any of these op tions: • None • Before document • After document Co.
These buttons ar e at the bottom of the Prin t dialog: Click To Go to the Help Center to find more information. Preview Get a full view of a photo, and see addit ional options for viewing or reviewing it prior to printing. Save as PDF (in Mac OS X version 10.

You can customize the setti ngs on the All-In-One Center dialog according t o the type of pr oject you want to create.

Maintaining the printer Print cartridges Installing print cartridges 1 Remove the used prin t cartridge or cartridges. For more information, see “Removing a used print cartrid ge” on page 96.
5 Close the color cartri dge carrier lid. 6 Close the scanne r unit, making sure to keep your hands out from un derneath the scan ner unit. The control panel d isplay will prom pt you to load paper and press to print an alignment page . Note: The scanner unit must be clo sed to st art a new scan, print, or copy job.
3 Press down on the cartridge carrier la tch to raise the cartridge carrier lid. W F I I P R I N T IN G 4 Remove the used print ca rtridge. Note: If you are removing both cartri dges, repeat step 3 a nd step 4 for the second cartrid ge.
3 Press . 4 Press repeatedly until Align Cartridges is highlighted. 5 Press . An alignment page prints. If you aligned the cart ridges to improve print q uality, prin t your document again. If print quality h as not improved, clean the print cartridge nozzles.
4 Using another clean section of the cloth, gently hold th e cloth against the con t acts for about thre e seconds, and then wipe in the d irection shown. 5 With another clean sectio n of the cloth, re peat step 3 and step 4. 6 Let the nozzles and contacts dry completely.
