Installing a flash memory or firmware card The syst em board has two connec tions f or an o ptional flash m emor y or fir mware c ard. Onl y one o f each m ay be insta lled, but the connectors are interchangeable.

3 Locate the ap propri ate holes on th e system board wh ere the posts of th e plastic tee will be aligned. Note: If an optional pr inter hard disk is cu rrently ins talled, then remove it firs t. For mo re informat ion, see “Rem oving a prin ter ha rd dis k” on p age 40 .
5 Atta ch th e ISP s oluti on to the system boar d. a Align the post s of the plastic tee to t he holes on the sys tem board. b Hold the edges o f the ISP and guide it t o the opening on th e system board cage, and th en gently allow it to rest on the plastic tee.
6 Connect the ISP solution interface cable into the co lor ‑ coded r eceptac le on the system b oard. 7 Firmly c onnect the ISP s oluti on to th e system boa rd cag e using the two s crews.

To install a printer hard disk onto the ISP: a Usin g a f lat head screw dri ve r, lo ose n the scr ews. b Remov e the screws attache d to the pr inter hard disk m ounting brac ket, and the n rem ove the brack et.
To install a printer hard disk directly on the system board: a Hold the edges o f the pr inted circuit board as sembl y, and then a lign th e stando ffs o f the pr inter har d dis k to the hole s in the system board. Press down on t he print er har d disk u ntil the s tandoffs are in pl ace.
b Use the two prov ided sc rews t o attach the pr inter har d disk m ount ing brac ket. c Insert the plug of the printer hard disk interface cable into the receptacle of the system b oard. Note: The plug s and rece ptacles are co lor ‑ cod ed. 4 Reattach the system board cover.

Configure your computer to use the printer wirelessly To print on a netwo rk p rinter, each Ma cinto sh use r must ins tall a custom printer driver file and creat e a pri nt que ue in the Prin ter Setu p Utilit y or P rint Cente r. 1 Install a printer driver file on the computer: a Obta in a cop y of the soft ware in stalle r pac kage.

Loading paper and specialty media The sele ction and h andlin g of pape r and spec ialty me dia can af fect how r eliably do cument s print . For mo re infor mation , see “Avoid ing jams” on page 255 a nd “Sto ring pap er” on page 8 1.

Loading the optional 550 ‑ sheet special media tray The opti onal 550 ‑ sheet specia l media tray (Tr ay 2) su pports narr ow pa per si zes such as env elope s and A6.

Keep all ot her tray s cl osed un til n eed ed. 1 Pul l the tr ay out . 2 Pull up and sl ide the width guide to th e corre ct posi tion for the paper siz e you are l oading .
4 Push the length guide release latch to raise the length gu ide. Slide the guide to the correct posit ion for the paper size you are loading, and then lock the gu ide. 5 Flex the sheets back and forth to loos en them. Do not fold or crease the p aper.
• Make sure paper does not exceed the maximum paper fill indicator located on the side of the tray. Warn ing —Pot ent ial D amag e: O verloa ding the tray m ay cause p aper jam s and po ssibl e printe r damag e.
Loading the multipurpose feeder The mul tipurpose feede r can hol d approxi mately: • 100 sheets of 75 ‑ g/m 2 (2 0 ‑ lb) paper • 10 envelopes • 75 tran sparen cies Note: Do not add or r emo.

4 Load the paper or specialty media. Sli de the stack into the multipurpose feeder until it comes to a stop. Notes: • Make sure paper o r specialty media does not exceed the maximum p aper fill indicator. • Load on ly one s ize and type of pape r or s pecialt y me dia at a time.
• If you are using a proxy se rver, then tempo rarily disable it to load the Web page correctly. 2 Click Sett ing s > Paper Me nu . 3 Change t he pape r size and type s ettings of the t ray so t hat they do not match th e settings o f any o ther tray, and then c lick Submit .

Paper and specialty media guidelines Notes: • Make su re the paper size , type , and weig ht ar e set co rrec tly on the com puter or on t he pri nter contro l pane l. • Flex, fan, and straighten specialt y media b efore loadi ng it. • The printer may print at a reduced speed to prevent damage to the fuser.
Grain direction Grain ref ers to t he alignm ent of t he pape r fibers in a sh eet of pap er. G rain is e ither grai n long , running the length of the paper , or grain short , runn ing the wid th of t he paper . For 60 to 135 g/m 2 (16 to 36 lb bo nd) p aper, g rain long pape r is r ecomm ended .
• Avoid papers with rough or heavily te xtured surfac es. Use papers pr inted with he at ‑ resistant inks d esigned for use in xerog raphic copiers. The ink mus t be able to with stand tempera tures up to 190°C (374°F) wi thout melti ng or relea sing ha zardous emiss ions.
