Appendix A. Assigning a Static IP in Windo w s PC W hen organizing y ou r local netw ork it’s ea sier to assign each comput er it’s own IP address th an using DH CP. Here we w ill take a look at d oing it in X P, Windows 7, W indow s 8 and W indows 8.
Then when the Network and Sharing Center ope ns, click on Change adapter se ttings . This will be the same on W indows 7 or 8.x. Right-click on your local adapter and select Properties.
In the Local Area Connection Properties window highli ght In ternet Protocol V ersion 4 (TCP/IPv4) then click the Properties button. Now se lect the radio button Use the following IP a ddress a nd enter in th e correct IP, Subnet mask, a nd Default gateway that corresponds with your network setup.
you entered. W hen you’re finis hed click OK. Now close out of the Local Area Connections Properties window . W ind ows 7 will run netw ork diagnostics and verify the connection is good. Here we h ad no problems with it, but if you did, you could run the network troubleshooting w i zard.
Now you can open the command prompt a nd do an ipconfig to see the network adapter settings have been successfully changed. Windows XP In this example we’re using X P SP3 Media Center Edition and changing the IP address of the Wireless adapter. To set a Static IP in XP right-click on My Network Places and select Properties.
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button. Now change th e IP, Subnet mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Server Addresses. W hen you’re finished click OK.
You will need to clos e out of the Network Conn ection Properties screen b ef ore the changes go into effect. Again you can verify the settings b y doing an ipconfig in the command pr ompt. In case you’re not sure how to do this, click on Start then Run.
In the Run box type in cmd and click OK. Then at the prompt type in ipconfig and hit Enter. T his will show the IP address for the network adapter you changed. If y o u h ave a small o ff ice or home network, assigning each computer a sp ecific I P address makes it a lot easier to manage and troubleshoot network connection problems.
