The functionality of three uni ts is identical, except for the number o f ports . Where appr opriat e, differ ences be tween the two units are noted. Overview of this User’s Guide Chapter 1, Introd uction . Describes the Switc h and its features. Chapter 2, Unpacking and Installation .
I NTRODUCTION This chapt er describes th e features of the Swi tch and som e background informati on abou t Ethernet/ Fast Ethernet switching technology. Fast Ethernet Technology The gr owin g importanc e of LANs and th e increasing complexity of de sktop computing applic ations are fueling the need for high perfor mance netw orks.
Switching Technology Anot her app roach t o pushing b eyond the li mits of Eth ernet technology is the devel opment of s witching t echnology. A switch bridge Ethernet packet s at the MAC address le vel of the Ethern et protoc ol trans mitting am ong connected Ethernet or Fast Ethernet LAN segments.
Switching LAN technology is a mar ked improv ement over the previous genera tion of netw ork bridges, which wer e characterized by higher latencie s. Routers have also b een used to segm ent local ar ea networks , but the cost of a rout er, the setup and m ainten ance r equired make r outer s relati vely impract ica l.
upgrade to Fast Eth ernet in the futur e. Ethern et workgroups can conn ect to the Switc hes now, and change adapters and hubs anytime later without needing to change the Switch es or reconf igur e the netw ork.
is only available in ha lf duplex mode. Data forwar ding rate p er po rt is at wire-speed for 100Mbp s speed. Data forwar ding rate p er po rt is at wire-speed for 10Mbps speed. Data fil terin g rate elimin ates all err or p ackets, runts, etc., pe r port at wire-speed f or 100Mbps speed .
U NP ACKING AND I NST ALLA TION This chapter pr ovides unpac ki ng and setup informat ion for the Switch es. Unpacking Open the s hippin g cart ons of the Switch and carefully unpacks its contents.

We reco mmend that you reta in t he dust cover in case you need to r emove the module for an extended period sometim e in the futur e. In FSW-1609/240 9TFX, the last p ort (Port 16/24) and the 100BASE-FX port is re ally the same port. Do not use both Port 16 /24 and the 10 0BASE-FX po rt at the sam e time.
Then, use sc rews prov ide d with t he eq uipm ent rack to mount each switch in the rack..
Identifying External Components This section identi fies all the major e xtern al com ponents of the switch . Both the front an d rear panels are shown, foll owed b y a desc ripti on of ea ch panel featur e. The indica tor panel is d escrib ed in detail in th e next chapter.
With the Auto-MDI/ MDIX func tion, you just n eed to plug-in the netw ork cable to th e hub direct ly and no need to car e if the en d node is NIC (N etwork Int erfac e Card) or switches and hubs.
