- 10 - Before Use At the time when this camera is purchased, the monitor faces the camera body . Fold out the monitor as shown below . 1 F old out the monitor . (M aximum 180 o ) 2 I t can be rotated 180 o forwa rds. 3 Re turn the monitor to it s original position.
- 11 - Before Use Notes • Be careful as the camera may get scratched if you rotate the mo nitor without folding it out complete ly . • When not using the monitor it is recommended tha t you close it with the screen f acing inwards to prevent di rt and scratche s.

- 13 - Prepar ation Att achin g the Lens Cap/the Shoulder Strap ∫ Att aching the Lens C ap • When the camer a is not being us ed, always attach the lens cap t o protect the lens. 1 Pass the s tring through the strap eye let o n the camer a. 2 Pass t he same string th rough the eyelet on the l ens cap.
- 14 - Prepar ation Att achin g the Lens Hood In bright sunlight or back light, the lens hood will minimize lens f lare and ghosting. The lens hood cuts of f excess lighting and improves the picture quality and should therefore remain mounted for mos t photographing situations (exemptions: s ee below).
- 15 - Prepar ation Charging the Bat tery ∫ About batteries that you can use with this camera • Use only the dedicated c harger and b attery . • The battery is not ch arged wh en the camer a is shipp ed. Charge th e battery before use. • Charge the b attery indoors .
- 16 - Prepar ation ∫ About the [CHARGE] indicator The [CHARGE] indicator turns on: Charging has started. The [CHARGE] indicator turns of f: Charging has been completed without any problem. ( Disconnect the charger from the electrical outlet and detach t he battery after charging is completed.

- 19 - Prepar ation Inserting and Removing C ard and Battery • Turn the camer a off an d co nfirm tha t the lens barrel is retract ed. • Close th e flash . 1 Set the cam era ON/OFF switch to OFF , push the release slider in the direction of the arrow , and open the card/b attery door .
- 20 - Prepar ation About the Internal Memory /the Card • Y ou can copy the recor ded pictures to a car d. (P 166) • The access time fo r the interna l memory may be longe r than the access t ime for a card. The camer a stores the image data as follows.

- 23 - Prepar ation ∫ A vaila b le recording time (when recording motion pictures) • “h” is an abbreviat ion for hour , “m” for minute and “s” for secon d. • [A VCHD] • [MP4] Notes • The recordabl e t ime is the to tal time of all the motio n pictures whic h have been recor ded.

- 27 - Basic Selecting the Recording Mode Change mod es by rota ting the mode dial. Align the desired mode with index A . • Make sure the dia l is set exactly to the click-stop positi on of the desired mode. (The mode dial ro t ates 360 o ) ∫ Basic ∫ Advanced Program Mode (P28) For taking pictures with automat ic exposure control.
- 28 - Basic Program Mode Recording mo de: The camera aut omatically sets the sh ut ter speed and t he aperture value according to t he brightness of the subject. Y ou can also change various settings in the [Rec] menu. 1 Set the mod e dial to [ ]. 2 Aim the AF frame a t the subject you want to focus on .
- 29 - Basic In Program Mode, you can change the preset aperture value and shutter speed combinations without changing the exposure. This is called program shift . Y ou c an e. g. reduce the extent of the sharply rendere d subject part s by decr easing t he aperture value or record a moving subject more dy namically by slowing the shutter speed.
- 30 - Basic Focusing Aim the AF frame at the s ubject, and then press the shutter relea se button halfway . • The AF frame is automat ically enlarged for cert ain zoom magnifications and in dark places.
- 31 - Basic ∫ About focus range The focus range is displayed when operating th e zoom. • The focus range is displa y e d in red when focusing was not successf ul af ter pressing the shut ter rele ase button halfway . The focus range may change gradually depending on the zoom posi tion.
- 32 - Basic Snap sh ot Mode Recording mo de: The camera will set the m os t appropriate settings to match the s ubj ect and the record i ng conditions so we recommend this mode for beginners or those who want to leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .
- 33 - Basic When the camera identifies the optimum s cene, the icon of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 se conds, after which its color changes to the usual red. - 38 - Basic Recording Motion Pictures Applicable mode s: This camera can record full high definition motion pictures c ompatible with t he A VCHD format or motion pictures recorded in MP4. Audio will be recorded in stereo. 1 S t art recording by pressing the mo tion picture button.
- 39 - Basic ∫ About the recording format for recording motion pictures This camera can record motion pictures in either the A V CHD or MP4 formats. A VCHD: Y ou c an record high definition quality images with this format. It is suitable for viewing on a large forma t TV or for savin g to disc.
- 40 - Basic Notes • The intern al memory c an only sto re [VGA] dat a as [MP4]. • The available reco rding time di splayed on the s creen may not de c r ease regularly . • Depending on th e type of the card, the card access indicatio n may appear for a while after recording motion pict ures.

- 44 - Basic Playing Back M otion Pictures This camera was designed t o play back motion pictures using the A VCHD, MP 4 and Qui c k T ime Motion JPEG formats. ∫ Operations performed during Motion Pictu re Playback The cursor displayed during playback is the same as 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 .
- 45 - Basic Y ou can creat e a single still picture from a recorded motion picture. 1 Press 3 to p ause mo tion picture playback. 2 Press [MENU/SET]. • A confirmatio n screen is displayed . It is execute d when [Y es] is selected. Exi t the menu after it is execu ted.
- 46 - Basic Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictu r e s cannot be recovered. • The picture be ing played back is deleted, regardless of whether it is recor ded on the internal memory or the card. • Pictures that do not comply with the DCF sta ndard or those that are protect ed cannot be deleted.
- 47 - Basic Notes • Picture serie s groups (pictures with the picture serie s icon [ ˜ ]) will be treated as a single pi cture. Deleting a picture series grou p will delete all pictu res in the group. (P147) • Do not turn the camera of f while deleting.
- 48 - Basic Setting the Menu The camera features menus that allow you to choose the settings for taking pictures and playing them back as you like. There are also menus that enable you to have more f un with the camera and us e it more easily .
- 49 - Basic • If you set [M enu Resume] (P64) in the [Setup] menu to [ON], the scre en shows the last selected menu item when the camera was turned of f. Example: In the [ Rec] menu, change [AF M ode] from [ Ø ] (1-area-focusing) to [ š ] (Face Detection) 1 Press [MENU/SET].

- 53 - Basic • Th e trave l date is calc ulated us ing the date in the c lock se tting and th e departu re date yo u set. If you set [W orld T ime] to the trav el destinat ion, the t ravel date is calculated usin g the date in the clock setting and the trav el destinat ion setting.
- 54 - Basic • When you conn ect the ca mera to a TV , the v olume of t he TV speakers does not chang e. Also, when connected , no sound is output from t he camera speakers. • Refer to P121 for det ails. • At th e time of purc hase, AF/A E Lock is selected .

- 62 - Basic • When the [Reset ] setting is selected durin g r ecording, the operation that res ets th e lens is als o performed at the same ti me. Y ou will hear the sound o f t he lens oper ating but this is normal and not indicativ e of malfunct ioning.

- 68 - Recording Using the Zoom Applicable mode s: Y ou can determine how much of a subject is to be captured / how large a subject is to be rendered by select ing the appropriate focal length, i.e. by zooming. Extended Optical Zoom works except when the maximum resolution is set.
- 69 - Recording ∫ Controlling the zoom with the zoom/focus rocker Using the zoom/focus rocker to control the zoom when taking pictures with the viewfinder may facilit a te holdi ng the camera still and so reduce blurring due to camera shake.
- 70 - Recording ∫ T yp es of zo oms ¢ 1 This includes the op tical zoom mag nification. The magnifi c a tion level dif fers depending on [Pic tur e Size] settin g. The zoom f unctions below can also be used to further increase the zoom magnification.

- 83 - Recording ∫ About [ ] (Intelligent ISO sensitivity control) The camera dete cts move ment of the s ubject and t hen automatically sets the opt im um ISO sensitivity and shutter speed to suit the movement of the subject and brightness of the scene to minimize the blurred ren dition of the subject.
- 84 - Recording Setting the White Balance Applicable mode s: In sunlight, under incandescent lights or in other s uch conditions where the color of white takes on a reddish or bluish t inge, this item allows adjus t ing the rendition to the color of white which is closest to what is seen by the eye i n accordance with the light source.
- 85 - Recording ∫ Auto White Balance Depending on the conditions pr evaili ng when pictures are taken, they may take on a reddish or bluish tint. Furthermore, when several dif ferent ty pes of light sources are being used or t here is nothing within the subject wi th a color close to white, Auto White Balance may not function properly .

- 87 - Recording Bracket setting is performed based on the adjus tment values for the White Balance fine adjustment, and 3 pictures with dif f erent color rendition are automatically recorded when the shutter release button is pressed once. 1 Press [DISP .

- 89 - Recording ∫ About [ š ] ([Face Detecti on]) The following AF frames are displayed when the camera detects t he face s. Y ellow: When the shutter release button is pressed halfway , the f r ame turns green when the camera is focused. White : Displayed when more than one face is detected.
- 90 - Recording ∫ Setting up [ ] ([AF T racking]) Aim the AF tracking frame at t h e subject, and press [AF/AE LOCK] to lock it . A A F tracki ng frame • The AF tracking frame will be displ ay ed.

- 93 - Recording Manual Focusing Applicable mode s: Use this function when you want to fix the focus or when the distance between the lens and the subject is known and you do not want t o activate Auto Focus. 1 Set the focu s selector switch to [MF]. • When using Manua l Focus, [MF] i s displ ayed on the screen.
- 94 - Recording ∫ Focus setting wi th the zoom/focus rocker • Set the focus selector switch to [MF]. 1 Set [Side L ever] in the [S etup] menu to [F OCUS]. (P54) 2 Slide the zo om/focus rocker to display the focus range on the screen. 3 Slide the zoom/focus rock er to focus on the subject.
