MONITOR 1, SELECT key MONITOR 1 generally displays the video signal that is being sent fr om the MAIN OUT jack (MAIN). It can also display the video signals coming in thr ough the VIDEO INPUT 1 (IN- PUT 1) or VIDEO INPUT 2 (INPUT 2) jacks.
5 Owner’ s Manual 4. V ALUE knob This knob is used to both select and change the value of various parameters. This knob can also be used as an addition controller (Ext V alue) by holding down the YES/ WRITE key and turning the V ALUE knob.
6 12. MOTION key Press this key to enter Motion Sequence mode. When this key is blinking r ed, you are in the Motion Sequence mode. Here you can select, r ecord and playback the operation of the FX CONTROL knob & ribbon, slider , CLIP pads, HOLD key , etc.
7 Owner’ s Manual 21. VIDEO INPUT indicator This indicator shows which video input source has been selected by using the INPUT key (see 17.). ( ☞ p.14) 22. AUDIO TRIG indicator This indicator will light when the level of the external audio signal (connected to the AU- DIO TRIG INPUT ) exceeds the current TRIG LEVEL setting.

The incoming audio signal can be used for BPM detection or to contr ol effects. 2. VIDEO INPUT jacks These jacks can r eceive video signals from a DVD player or other video devices.

10 4. Basic concepts and operation Concepts Sampling video The kaptivator saves sampled video on its internal hard drive as “clips.” These saved clips are managed as “banks”, each containing eight clips.
11 Owner’ s Manual Te r m s Style Each “style” contains settings for routing, ef fects, playback synchr onization, and controller assignments. Y ou can switch between styles during playback, or edit and store styles accord- ing to your needs. One hundred styles can be stor ed in the kaptivator .
12 Basic operation — Playback 1. T ur ning the power on/of f Power To turn the power on 1 Connect the AC adapter , your input devices, and your output devices. 2P r ess the power switch to turn the power on. After a few moments, the V ALUE display will indicate the currently selected style and bank.
13 Owner’ s Manual 2. Selecting and playing video Playing a clip 1P r ess one of the clip pad keys that are lit (gr een for Group A, orange for Group B). The selected clip pad will light red, and the clip that is r egister ed to that pad will play .
14 3. W orking with external video sources Viewing an external video source To view the video source connected to the VIDEO INPUT 1 jack, pr ess the MONITOR 1 SE- LECT key to select INPUT 1. T o view the video sour ce being r eceived by the INPUT 2 con- nector , select INPUT 2.

Synchronizing to music Y ou can use the BPM setting or the playback fr om an external audio source to contr ol the playback speed or the start timing of a video clip, or to contr ol the current effect. NOTE If you synchroniz e the clip start timing to the BPM, it may be dela yed by se v eral fr ames.

17 Owner’ s Manual 5. Using Motion Sequences Y ou can recor d and save up to one hundred sets of controller movements as “motion se- quences,” and then select a motion sequence and play it back when desired.
18 Erasing a motion sequence 1 If the MOTION key is blinking, you ar e already in Motion Sequence mode. T o enter Motion Sequence mode, pr ess the MOTION key; the MOTION key will blink.
19 Owner’ s Manual Customizing a Style —Style Editing The kaptivator lets you create and stor e one hundr ed “styles.” This section explains how you can create styles that ar e appropriate for the video material you’r e using and how you’r e us- ing it.
20 Editing examples Changing the operation of the ribbon contr oller 1 Select the style that you want to edit. For this example, choose style number “04”. 2 Hold down the EDIT key and press the STYLE key . The display will indicate “A1.**” and the EDIT key will blink.
21 Owner’ s Manual Creating a clip —Sampling and Quick Editing 1. Sampling Sampling video Sampling a video input sour ce 1P r ess the SAMPLE key; it will blink, and you will be in Sampling mode. Y ou can press the SAMPLE key once again to exit Sampling mode.
22 T urn the V ALUE knob to specify the resulting playback speed. Y ou can specify a value between “1” and “5400” times normal. For example if you’ve specified 8 seconds as the sampling time: x “2” will recor d for 16 seconds, and the playback will be double-speed.

Clips For each piece of video material that you sample, you can specify the playback start point, end point, loop point and looping method; these settings can then be saved along with the video material as a “clip.” Even when using the same piece of video material, you can change the start point etc.
24 3P r ess the EDIT key , and turn the V ALUE knob to select the Playback Pattern. This is the second digit in the V ALUE display . ( ☞ p.40, Playback T ype and Playback Pattern selection) If playback type 1 or type 3 was selected in step 2, use the following procedur e to edit the clip 4a .
