5 Introduction This document contains information de scribing the KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3600 Film Scanner (RFS 3600) version 2.10 softwar e. This software package includes a MICROSOFT WI NDOWS TWAIN Data Sou rce and a MACINTOSH Acquire Modul e; these two item s will be referred to as the Host Soft ware.
6 The KODAK PROFESSIONA L RFS 3600 TWAIN Data Source is TWAIN 1.8 c ompliant. The RFS 3600 TWAIN Data Sou rce has been tested on systems using the follo wing Microsoft Operating System s: 1) MICROSOFT WINDO WS 98 Second Edition (SCSI and USB) 2) MICROSOFT WINDO WS NT 4.
7 The Acquire Mod ule is not qualified for u se on machines running Mac OS X. Software Installa tion From a CD If you have a Version 2.10 Host Software CD, install the software as follows: MICROSOFT W.
8 MACINTOSH 1) Insert the CD into your CD -ROM driv e. The CD icon will appear on the desktop. Double-click th e icon and then double-click on th e “Install RFS 3600 TWAIN Data Source” icon to start the software install ation procedure.
9 3) If you have a previous version of the RFS 3600 Film S canner TW AIN Data Source, a message will appear telling you the older TWAI N must be removed before the new TWAIN can be installed. Cli ck OK and the removal pro cess will execute. 4) Once the old TWAI N is removed, the in stallation of the new TWAIN will start automatically.
1 0 Launch the RFS 3600 Film Scanner Ho st Software and make sure the monitor and output profiles sele cted in the Settings tab are the same. (Selecting the Kodak sRGB Displa y profile should produ ce satisfactory results in mo st cases).

Even if you hav e a system with hundreds of mega bytes, or even more than 1 gigabyte of DRAM , switching between multiple ADOBE PHOTOSHOP imag e MICROSOFT WI NDOWS, each holding a 50MB i mage, can be time consum ing and awkward.
1 4 Main Screen When you select t he RFS 3600 Film Scanne r Host Software from the A DOBE PHOTOSHOP Import sub-menu, the Main Screen and S ettings tab will appear. Figure 1 is similar to how the m ain screen will look when the software i s started and a filmstrip is in the scanner.
1 5 Settings T ab Most of the Settings Tab featur es have not be en changed. As with Version 1.20 software, select your film type (Negative, Reversal or Black & White) and then select the cor rect film term in the drop down box. Make a sele ction for your Monitor an d Output Profile.
1 6 Scan All or select one thumbnail (which dese lects all others), all presca nned frames are deselected exce pt for the frame displayed in the ta bs.
1 7 When scanni ng Color Negative or B&W negative filmstrip s, be sure the strip h as less than one half of the frame completely exposed (i.e. film is totally black ). The DMin measurement will fail if the scanner "sees" a fu ll frame of black film.
1 8 • Figure 4, Conf iguration Screen Prescan Resolution You may now select bet ween three different prescan resolutions – 300, 600 or 900 dpi. A high dpi Prescan will maintain higher image quality longer if you magnify the Prescan using the Zoom I n tool.
1 9 Selecting 8 bits Output De pth commands the Host Softwa re to transform the image data from the Kodak 12-bit p rocessing space to 8-bit space befor e it is transfe rred into ADOBE PHOTOSHOP or the image file is written to your hard drive (Scan to File feature).
2 0 Scan Icons All of the icons dealing with film scanning have been g rouped together in the middle of the bottom edge of the main screen. These icons, see n in Figure 5 , are, left to right: Autofocus (AF), Prescan Frame, Prescan Strip, Scan and Scan to File.
21 Focus Details The focus point val ue, either from an AF or Manual focus operation, is sav ed and used from scan session to scan sessi on. It is up to you, the film scanner's user, to decide how often you want to use the focu s feature. A mounted slide a nd a filmstrip have differe nt focus points.
2 2 Thumbnails Page 49 of the original User's Manual states that image thumb nails will not be affected by color adjustments made by the user. This is incorr ect; the thumbnails will reflect the changes se en in the Preview Ima ge. The thumbnail strip across the top of the M ain Screen has som e new features.

2 4 Ta b s Settings Tab Frame Number The thumbnail num ber of the frame which is currently b eing displayed in the Preview Window is sh own in the upper right corner of the Settings Ta b. See Frame Numberin g to learn how to match th e thumbnails’ numbers with th e filmstrip’s frame numbers.
2 5 Color Balance and L evels & Curves Tab Page 73 and 75 of the original User's Manual state that the Befo re and After images on the Color Balance and Levels & Curves tabs will be ident ical when you enter the respective tab.
2 6 Scan and Output Settings • Figure 10, Scan and Output Settings The Scan and Outp ut settings (Resolution, Height and Width) are laid out to allow their values to be easily compared, and to make the rel ationships between these fields mo re apparent.

2 8 Intended Use and Output Resolution The Intended Use field all ows you to set the Output Resolution by selecting the intended use of the imag e. The choices are see n below, the resolution listed to t he right of each choice indi cates its corresponding Out put Resolution.
