2-3 2 Y our camera Softkeys Y our camera has three “softkeys.” A softkey is a button whose f unction changes according to wh at is displayed ab ove it. For example, in the Capture m ode, the following s creen can be displayed : In this case, pressing the left softkey enters the Capture Preferences.
2-4 Y o ur st atu s LCD A display on the top of th e camera shows the current settings. The following subsections briefly describe each en try . For information o n how to define settings through the Captu re mode menus or the Scro ll an d Select buttons , refer t o Chapte r 3.
2-5 2 Y our camera Exposu re compensatio n ☞ In very large rooms, under low light , you may achieve better results by turning the flash off entirely , or by utilizing th e flash sync capability with an external flash unit. While in Capture mod e, the camera exposure can be adjusted f rom -2.
2-6 Quality Y ou can set your camera to take pi ctures with a Good, Bett er , or Best Quality setting. The Qu ality setting in dicates how mu ch the picture is compressed to save space on the memory card. For advanced users, a Super quality is also available.
2-7 2 Y our camera Understa ndi ng qual it y and re so luti on Keep in mind that with y our camera y ou’re g enerally going t o get beautiful digital pictures. But bas ed on two factors , resolut i on and co mpression, so me pictures will be of a higher q ualit y than other s .
2-8 Batteries The battery power icon chan g es automatically . It is a display-only icon , you cannot select or change it. ☞ Battery life is rapidly reduced wh en Preview or Review modes are in use. Pictures stored on the memor y car d a re n ot lost if the b atteries are d epleted.
2-9 2 Y our camera Manual mod e The camera suppo rts two advanced Capture mod es , the external flash and the long-time mod e s. IrDA (I nfrared) co mmunicatio n In a camera-to-camera co nnection in the Review mode, two cameras can communicate w ith each other th rough an IrDA connection.
2-10 Removab le memor y card The DC265 camer a uses a removable memory card, also referred to as a CompactFlash or KODAK Picture card, for storing y our pictures. Y ou can erase the picture data on the card and then reuse it. T o reformat a memo ry card, see “Format card prefere nces ” on page 4-6.
2-11 2 Y our camera Removing and inserting the memory card A lthough your camera can’ t take pictures wit hout the memory card, you can remove th e card to use in another camera or t o place in yo ur computer . To remove the memory card: To insert the memory card: 1 Open the memory card door .
2-12 Power managem ent Y ou can use b atteries or an AC adapter to power y our camera. T o conserve power usage, the camera has a sleep mo de. Sleep mo de After a specified period of inactivity , the camera enters sleep m ode by turning the color LCD of f.
2-13 2 Y our camera Using the batt ery charger T o ensure that you have a constant su pply of freshly ch arged batteri es, a battery charg er and four AA Ni-MH rechar geable batteries are provid ed with some cameras. These batteries need to b e charged before using and take up to eight hours to fully ch ar g e.
2-14 Using you r batter i es ✔ Kodak recommends K ODAK Photolife AA Alkaline Batteries, or KODAK Photolife AA Ni-MH Rechargeable B atteries for use in the DC265 camera. ✔ Remove the batteries when the camer a is stored for extended periods of time .
2-15 2 Y our camera ✔ When disposing o f batteries, follow the manufacturer’ s instructions. Kodak suggests custom ers take advantage of any co mmunity battery recycling prog rams that may exist in your area. Contact your local waste remover or recycler for details.
2-16 Installing the b atteries Remove the batteries if th e camera will not be used for an extended pe riod of time. This will extend the batt ery life and prev ent camera damage from battery leaks or corrosion. I f the batteries are removed fro m the camera for more than a few days, the d ate and time wil l be deleted and m u st be reset.
3-1 3 T aking pictures 3 3 T aking pictures This chapter provides information to help you take great pictures. Y ou can simply turn on the camera, p osit ion the Mode dial t o Capture, and start taking pictures. However , you may want to change s ome of the default settin gs.
3-2 Setting the camera to Capture mode T o us e the default settings and begin taking pict ures, refer to “T aking pictures” on page 3-1 8. T urn the Mode dial to Cap ture. The lens extends to the default pictur e-taking posit ion. ☞ Y ou cannot take pi ctures without a memory card in t he camera.
3-3 3 T aking pictures 3 Defining the settings Y ou can use the default set ti ngs or you can defi ne settings using the Capture mode menus and the Scroll and Select buttons on the top of the camera. Capture mode settings affect only future pictures, they cannot be u sed to alter pict ures you have already t aken.
3-4 Display ing Captu re mode s ettings As a first step in adjus ting the Captu re mo de settings thro ugh the menus , you need to disp lay the Capture mode s ettin gs screen on the color LCD: ☞ The.

3-6 Album s ettings Album settings let you specify the albu m in which pictures wil l be st ored on the camera memory card. All future pictures are sto red in the selected albu m un til you change the s etting or turn the camera off. 1 Press t o select one of the following: ✔ No Album—does no t store yo ur pictures in an album.
3-7 3 T aking pictures 3 White balance s etting s White balance adjusts the color balance to remove the colo r cas t that th e current lighting conditions add. 1 Press to high lig ht the type of w hite balance you want t o use. ✔ Automatic—takes pictures under a variety of lightin g co ndition s.
3-8 Watermark s ettings W atermark settings allow you to place a date, ti me, text, or logo watermar k on the pictures yo u take. W atermarks will only ap pear on future pictures, and y ou can see them on pictures in t he Review mode when the fu l l resolution picture appears.

3-10 Advanc ed focus mo de setting s The Advanced Focus Mode settings allow yo u to select one of the following: ✔ Multi-Spot Aut o Focu s ✔ Single-Sp ot Auto Focus ✔ Manual Focus To select the focus mode: 1 Press to choose the focus mode yo u want to use.
3-11 3 T aking pictures 3 Pref erences s ettings The Preferences settings ar e C apture, Date and T ime, and Camera Name. Capture 1 Press to select the particular setting you want to change. ✔ File T ype—the format in which th e pictures are saved, either FlashPix (FPX) or JPEG (JPG).
3-12 Date and ti me 1 Press Format. The Date and T ime Fo rmat scr een appears . 2 Press t o select the date and time format you want to use. 3 Press Select. The Date and T ime scr een appears again. 4 Press to select a value for the highlig hte d fiel d.
3-13 3 T aking pictures 3 Camera na me When you name you r camera, the name is included in the header of each picture file. To name your camera: 1 Press the left softkey to select the type of character set you want to choose from: ✔ capital letters ✔ lower case letters ✔ numb ers ✔ symbols 2 Press to select a character .
3-14 Script setti ngs Scripts are electronic files on the camera memory card that automate routine camera operations and extend camera fu nctions. When a memory card con taining a script is placed in your c amera, the script appears as an option in either the Capture o r Review modes.

3-16 Setting your ca mera for Su per qual ity There are several i mporta nt things to remember: ✔ The Super quality setti ng only app ears in the script menu if it res id es on the memory card that is currently in the camera. ✔ Y ou can only set your camera for Super quality thro ugh the Scripts menu.
3-17 3 T aking pictures 3 Defini ng settings using the Scroll a nd Select but tons It ’ s likely that you’ ll change these set tings much m ore often than the se ttings that you defi ne through th e settings menu s. The settings can change from pict ure to picture dependi ng on the conditions that exist at the time.
3-18 T aking pictures T ak in g any k in d of picture, still, b urst, or time -lapse is basically the same. The only dif ference is the amount of time you h o ld down the Shutter button. For the fastest r esp ons e wh en t ak ing a pi ct ur e, p ress an d hol d t he Shu t ter but ton halfway down until the gr een R eady light illum inates.
3-19 3 T aking pictures 3 V iewin g the mem ory gauge In the Captur e mode, the Overlay bar displays a memor y gauge that gives the status of wo rking memory (DRAM) an d memory on the memory card. W orking memory i s the memor y the camera uses to process pictures.
3-20 Adding sou nd to a picture in Qu ickview After taking a picture with Qu ickview turned on, you can attach sound to the picture. Once the p i cture disappears f rom Quickv iew , you must enter the Rev iew mode to r ecord sound. ☞ Y ou can also attach sound to a picture in the Review mo de.
3-21 3 T aking pictures 3 Zooming There are two types o f zooming. Optical zooming uses the lens t o produce quality pi ctures. Digital zo oming continues the zooming process b ut reduces the qualit y of the pi cture . Optical zooming The camera is eq uipped with a 3X zoom lens that lets you zoo m in from W ide Angle (38mm) to T eleP hoto (1 15mm).
3-22 Digital zoomin g Digital zoom ing allows you to zoom in on a subject b eyond the range pr ovided by the optical zoom lens. Digital zooming crops the digital pic ture and resizes the new cropped p i cture to the size of th e s elected resolution. The viewfinder cann o t accurately depict a subject that is digitally zoomed.
4-1 4 4 Reviewing 4 4 Reviewing your pictures Did you have your thumb over the lens? Did someone h ave their eyes closed? Should y ou take one mor e picture before y ou let your ki ds take thos e ties of f? W ith film, you’ll know as so on as you get yo ur pictures pr ocessed.
4-2 Setting the Camera to the Review mode T urn the Mode dial to Rev iew . The last pictur e taken appears on the color LCD in a full screen view . Pr essing D isplay toggles between the thumbnail and full scr een views. Filmstrip o f pictur es stor ed on Highlighted pictur e Overlay fr om fi lmstrip memory car d curr ent pictur e position.
4-3 4 Reviewing 4 Setting Review mode preferences The Review mode p r eferences allow you to set glo bal parameters for this mode. Review mode pr eferences include: ✔ overla y ✔ slide show ✔ video ✔ playback ✔ format card 1 Press M enu. The Review M ode Settings scr een appear s.
4-4 Overlay pr eferences Use the Overlay preferences to turn the overlay on or of f. The overlay appears on the color LCD and disp lays the softkey label s. Slide sho w preferen ces A slide show displays each selected picture for a specified interval.
4-5 4 Reviewing 4 Vi d eo pr efe r ence s Use V ideo prefer ences to specify the type of video con nection needed for a televis ion. Playba ck preferen ces Use Playback preferences to specify how quickly burst, time-lapse, and albu m pictures are displayed du ring full-screen playback.
4-6 Format ca rd prefer ences If your camer a does not recognize the format of the memory card, or for s ome other reason you want to refor m at a memory card, you can do so from this camera menu option . W A RNING: All files, including image, script, protected, and tex t files, are deleted from the memory card during reform atting.
4-7 4 Reviewing 4 V i ewing pictures Y ou can view your pictures on e at a time on a full screen, or you can view them one at a time, in a continuo us s croll, or in a fast scroll on a filmstrip screen. To review pictures on a full screen: To review pictures on a filmstrip screen: 1 Set the Mode di al to Review .
4-8 V i ewing the remain i ng memory The Review sc reen displays a reminder of the amount of memory remai ning on the memory card . The memory ba r gives two di fferent indi cations about memory . The Memory Filled St atus indicator sho w s the amount of used memory (in blue) and the amount of available memory (in white).
4-9 4 Reviewing 4 Plac ing ma rked pictu r es i n an album Y ou can place marked pictures in an existing album or a new one. To create a new album: 1 Press Me nu. 2 Press to highlight the Album icon. 3 Press to select an existing album or New Album. Refer to the next subsectio n for information about crea ting a new album.
4-10 Copy ing marke d pictur es from ca mera to c amera Y ou can send marked pictur es to or receive mark ed pictures fr om another camera in the Review m ode. 1 Place the two cameras facing each other , aligning their IrDA transceiver s . During Camera-to-Camera communication, the cameras communicate using the IrDA port.
4-11 4 Reviewing 4 Protect i ng your p ictures Y ou can safeguard yo ur pictures from being deleted acc identally from the camera memory card. This feature is v ery useful if the cam era and memo ry card ar e used by more than one person. To protect and undo the protectio n of your pictures: 1 Set the Mode di al to Review .
4-12 Opening albums The Review screen shows yo u when pi ctures are grouped in an albu m and allows you to op en the album to vi ew the pictures. If the highlighted picture resides in an album, an album i con appears and the left softkey is labelled Open.
4-13 4 Reviewing 4 Expanding and collapsing pictures It is important to note t hat your camera treats burst and time-lapse pi ctures as folders containing a s eries of individual pictures, but displays them as a single picture un til you press Exp and.
4-14 Adding sound to pictur es Y ou can attach sound to a s elected picture at an y time while reviewing your pictures from either the filmstrip or full screens. ☞ Y ou can only add sound to or play sound associ ated with bur st and ti me- lapse pictures when the series is collapsed.
4-15 4 Reviewing 4 Deleting pictures To delete one picture: To delete multi ple pict ures: 1 Scroll until th e pi cture you want to d e lete is highligh ted in the center of the filmstrip. 2 Press Delete. 3 Press one o f the following so ftkeys: ✔ D elete—deletes the picture and any attached sound.
4-16 Playing sound, bursts, and time- lapse sequences T o play sound, burs t, and time-lapse sequ ences you have to b e viewing the picture on a full screen. 1 Scroll to highli ght the picture sequen ce you want to play . 4-18 Vi ewing pictures on your television The camera video out featu r e lets you show the pictures fr om the memory card on your t elevision. ☞ The color LCD is disabled wh en the camera is attached to the video cable. 1 T urn off your televis ion and camera.
5-1 5 5 Connecting 5 Connecting your camera to your computer A first s tep to using y our digital pi ctures on you r computer is to connect your camera to your computer .
5-2 Which connection? The connect ion you u se depends on sev eral vari ables. Y ou need to d etermine whi ch connections are available with your Operating System, which of these connections are physical ly supported by you r computer , and then yo u can make the connecti on.
5-3 5 Connecting The two types of co nnections available with WINDOWS 95B are: ✔ Serial—see “Checking for R S-232 serial support” on page 5- 5, then see “Using a serial cable to connect ” on page 5-7.
5-4 Determin ing what your computer sup ports Checki ng for USB support The Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a relatively new metho d for your camera to communicate with the PC. A USB conn ect ion is faster than an RS- 232 serial connection, increasing t he maximum d ata transfer rate to 12 Mb/sec.
5-5 5 Connecting Checkin g for RS-232 serial s upport Although not as fast (maxi mum data transfer rat e of 1 15 kb p er second), an RS- 232 serial connection is suppo rted by the vast majority of computer s. The serial port option is available on WINDOWS 95, WINDOWS 98, and WINDOWS NT 4.
5-6 Checki ng for IrD A transc eiver support Infrared is invisible light that the camera uses to transfer pictures without cables or wires. Like y our television remote, the camera req uires a clear line of sight between its IrDA transceiver an d the IrDA port on the compu t er .
5-7 5 Connecting 13 V erify that you have an internal or external IrDA transceiver connected to your comp uter . Check your com puter hardware manual for information on the IrDA transceiver location.
5-8 Using a USB cable to co nnect The camera can con nect to a computer using the USB cable includ ed in your camera package. To connect to your computer with a USB cable: Using a n infr ared trans ceiver to con nect Y our camera automatically detects when a compatible IrDA dev ice is present.

6-3 6 Setting camer a ✔ C ommunicati ons Method—defin es the type of co nnection you want to use between the camera an d your computer . ✔ Baud Rate—defines the rate at which the camera and the computer communicate. This field is grayed out if USB or IrDA is s elected as the communication meth od.
6-4 Specifying camera set tings ✔ P icture type—lets you select Still, Burst, or T im e -lap se. This field defaults to Still when y ou turn off t he camera. ✔ White balance—examines your pictures and tries to adjust the color balance to remove the color casts that the current lightin g conditions add.

7-3 7 Accessing pictures Y o u’ve got to connect first T o use Mounter Software to access your pictures, the camera need s to be connected to yo ur computer and turned on. Refer to Chapter 5 for detailed information. Vi ewing your pictur es Mounter Software lets you view your pictures as picture file s or as thumbna ils.
7-4 Copyi ng pictu res to your comp uter Mounter Software allows y ou to copy p ictures from the camera to y our computer . To copy pictures: 1 Double-click the My Computer icon. The My Co mputer window ap pears. 2 Double-click the Camera icon. The Camera an d System folder i cons appear .
7-5 7 Accessing pictures T ransferr i ng pi ctures and scripts to your camera Mounter Software allows you to d rag and drop pictur es and scripts fr om your computer to y our camera. A predefin ed script can promp t you for cert ain actio ns and def ine the beh avior of the camera.

7-7 7 Accessing pictures Openi ng picture files i n other softwar e programs Mounter Software allows you to open picture files into a registered software progr am. Saving sound When you transfer pictures containing sound , Mounter Software extracts the sound portion of the file.
7-8 Setting preferences Mounter Software allows you to set preferences that determine how Mounter Software noti fies and prompts you for audio opti ons.
7-9 7 Accessing pictures Pictur e Card adap ter The DC265 camera u s es a removable KODAK Picture Card that complies with the CompactFlash standard. Due to th e size of the CompactFlash card, most PCMCIA card readers d o not acc ept the card as is, but require an adapter card.
7-10 Does my c omput er suppo rt a PCMCI A card ? To determine if your computer supports a PCMCIA connection (WINDOWS 95, WINDOWS 98): 1 Right-click the My Computer icon. 2 Click Prope rt ies in the pop-up menu . 3 Click th e Device Manager tab. 4 V erify that a “PCMCIA Socket” entry exists.
