4 Important Ope rating Consid erations for Safety • Place t he projector in a horizont al positi on no greater than 15 degrees off a xis. • Loca te the pr ojector in a well-ventilate d area wi thout any obstructions to intake or exhaust vent s. Do not place the projector on a tabl ecloth or other sof t covering that may b lock the vent s.
5 Intr oduction Y our new digit al projecto r provides c omputer and vid eo inputs and ha s XGA 1024x768 r esolution. The pr ojector is easy to connect, easy t o use, easy to mainta in. An Inter active Display on the top of the projec tor gives you constant feedba ck on the status of the pr ojector .
6 Connec tor P anel The C160 pr ovides one computer a nd two video connectors: • one M1-D/ A (H D, DVI, and computer) • one S-vi deo •o n e c o m p o s i t e R C A It al so has an RS-23 2 serial con nector for s erial contr ol. The Comma nd Line Interfac e (CLI) spec ifications and commands ar e on our we bsite.
7 Connecting a computer Required compute r connections Connect the black end of the computer cable to t he to the Comput er 1 con- nector on the pr ojector . Connect the blue end to the video port on your com- puter . If you are using a desktop co m puter , you first need to disconnect the monitor cable from t he computer ’s video port.
8 If you prefer connecting your C180 to your comp uter with an optional VESA cable, conn ec t on e end of the cable to the VESA port on your com- puter , an d connect the other end of th e cable to the bl ue Comp uter 2 con- nector on the pr ojector .
9 Displa ying a computer image Remove the lens cap. Pr ess the Po w e r butto n on the top of the pr oje ctor or the remote. The LED fla shes green and the fans start to run. Whe n the lamp comes on, the sta rtup screen is displayed an d the LED is stea dy green.
10 First-time pr ojector use with Windo ws 98 The first time you connect a computer running W indows 98 to the projector , the computer recognizes the pr ojector as “new h a r dware” a nd the Add Ne w Ha rd ware W i zard ap pe ar s.
11 Skip this pag e if y ou did not co nnect th e USB portio n of the M1 com- pute r cable F or Windo ws 98: • If you conn ected the USB cable, the A dd New Hard ware W izard appears a gain. Drivers mu st be install ed to use th e USB functionalit y .
12 Adjusting the imag e Adjust the height of the pr ojector , if n ecessary , by pr essing the r elease but- ton to extend the elevator foot. Rotate th e leveling foot (locate d at the bot tom back righ t corner) , if neces- sary . Position the projector the desir ed distance fr om the screen a t a 90 degree angle to the screen.
13 Connecting a video de vice Standard v ideo conn ections Plug the audio/ video (A/V) cable’s yellow c on nector into the video-out connector on the video dev ice. Plug the o ther yellow co nnector into the yel- low Video 2 connect or on the pr ojector .
14 Displa ying a video ima ge Remove the lens cap. Press t he Po w e r b utton on the top of the p rojec tor or t he remo te. The LED flash es green and the fans start to r un. When the lamp comes on , the star tup screen is displayed a nd the LED is steady gr een.
15 Adjust the zoom or focus rin gs b y rotating them until the desir ed image size and fo cus are p roduced. If the image is not squar e, adjust the vert ical keystone using the buttons on the keypad.
16 Shutting do wn the pr ojec tor The projector automatica lly blanks the screen after n o active source is detected for 3 0 minutes. This blank screen helps pr eserve the life of the pro- jector . The imag e returns wh en an active sour ce is detected or a r emote or keypad bu tton is press ed.

24 Using the k eypad buttons Most bu ttons ar e described in detail in other sections, but h ere is an over- view of the ir functions: pow e r –turns the projector on (page 9) a nd off (page 14). menu –op ens the o n-scre en menus (page 29). select –confirms choic es made in the men us (page 29).
25 Using the remote contr o l The remote uses tw o (2) provided AA batteries. They ar e easily installed by sliding t he cover of f the rem ote’s back, a ligning the + and - ends of t he bat- teries, s liding th em into place, and then r eplacing th e cover .
26 Using the audio T o play sound from the proje ctor , con nect your source to the Audio I n con- nector on the pr ojector . T o adjust the volume, u s e the buttons on the k eypad or remote. T o adjust the bal a nce or turn off the projector ’s chime, us e the Audio menu (see page 33) .
27 Optimizing computer images After your comput er is connected pr operly and the computer ’s image is on the scre en, you can optimize the i mage using the onscr een menus. For gen- eral info rmation on using the menus, see page 29 . • Adjus t the Key stone, C ontras t, or Bri ghtnes s in the Pi cture menu.
28 Optimizi ng video ima ges After the video devic e is connected pr operly an d the image is on the scr een, you can optimize the image using the onscreen menus. For general informa- tion on u s ing the menus, see pa ge 29. • Adj ust the Keyst one, Contrast , Brightness , Color , or T int in the Picture menu.
29 Using the menus T o open the menus, press th e Menu button on the keypad or r emo te. (The menus a utomatically close a fter 60 second s if no button s are pre ssed.) The Main menu appears. Use the arrow buttons to move up and down to high - light t he desired submenu, then pr ess the Select butto n.
30 Picture menu T o adjust th e following six settings, hi ghlight the setting, pr ess Selec t , use the up an d down arro ws to adjust t h e values, then pr ess select to confi rm the c hanges. Ve r t i c a l K e y s t o n e : adjusts the image verticall y and makes a squar er image.
31 Presets : The pr ovided Preset s optimize the projector for displaying com- puter pr esentations, photogra phs, and film images. Y ou can use the pr eset as a sta rting point, then fur ther customize the s ettings for each so urce. If you do change t he settings, the Pr eset menu item selected ch anges to None to indi cate your c ustomization.
32 Advanced settings Sharpness : (v ideo sources only) cha nges the clarity of t he edges of a vide o image. Select a sha rpness settin g. Color S pace : This option applies to comput er sour ces. It all o w s you to select a color space t hat has been spec ifically tuned for the video inpu t.
33 Settings menu Audio : allow s adjustmen ts to the vo lume and bala nce, and tur ns the pr ojec- tor ’s startup Chime on and off. Sources : al lows you to assi gn a partic ular input to a specific source ke y when usin g the optiona l Integrator remote.
34 Star tup Logo: allows y ou to display a blank Bl ack, White, or Blue screen instead of the default screen at startup and wh en no sour ce is detected.
35 Effect K ey : allow s you to assign a differ ent func tion to t he Effe ct butto n on the re mote to quickly and ea sily use the effect. O nly one effect can be enabled at a time. Hi ghlight an ef fect and pr ess Se lect to choose a differ ent one.
36 Network : Th e C180 has an RJ45 E thernet connec tor t hat sup ports n etwork connecti ons and TCP/IP protocols. This w ill allow for the control and man- agement of the projector over a corporate network. The follow ing fields are accessib le when DHCP is not checked and av ailable for manual entry of data.
37 Maintenance Cleaning the lens 1 Apply a non-abra sive camera lens cleaner to a soft, dry c loth. A void using an excessive amo unt of cleaner , and don’t apply t he cleaner directly to the lens. A brasive cleaner s, solvents or other harsh chemic als migh t scratch the lens.
38 Replacing the pr ojection la mp The lamp hour timer in the About menu counts the number of ho urs the lamp has been in use. Fifty h ours before the specified end of t he lamp’s life, the message “ Replace lamp” briefly appea rs on the screen at each startup and in the Interac tive Display .
39 • Be extr emely careful when remov ing the lamp housing. In the unlikely event that the lamp ruptur es, small glass frag ments may be generat ed. The lamp module is desig ned to contain m ost of these fragmen ts, but use caution when removing it.
40 Cleaning the dust filters The dust f ilters catch dust an d other particles in the air . If the filters bec ome clogged, the projector does not cool pr operly and may malfunction. In dirty or dusty environment s, they should b e cleaned after every 100 hours of use.
