Storage is a device w hich info rmat ion can be kept. There are three main types of storage— ROM, RAM, and hard disks. ROM contains data and/ or machine-executab le instructions th at can be read but not modifi ed. On your QMS 1725 SLS Pri nt Syst em , the operating s y stem code, resident font s, and resident emulat ions are stored in ROM .
Ph ysical memory refers to the amount of RAM inst alled in the print e r . Spoolin g is temporary storage to hold print jobs unti l the print er is available to process them. The first step in all ocati ng your printer ’s memory is to define yo ur printing needs.

This submenu allo ws you to a llocate the print e r’s mem ory (RAM ) among the various m emo ry clients. Th e flexibi lity of defi ning memo ry available to clients allows experien ced users to optimize the print er's performan ce according t o a given set of conditions.
When the sum of the Min K Spool for all interfaces is less than K Mem for Spool, memory is allocat ed as follows: 1 Interf aces with Mi n K S pool (in the Administ rati on/ Com mun ica- tions menu) value greate r than zero to receive t heir specif ied al lo- catio n.
The K Mem for PS Fon ts, listed on the statu s page as Font Cach e, is the numbe r of kilobytes of R AM dedicat ed t o caching previously scaled bit map representations of f ont s for the Po stS cript emulat ion interpreter .
The K Mem Emul Tmp is the num ber of kilobytes of RAM to be used by non-PostS c ript emulation s for storing downloaded ( soft) fonts, forms, or macros. The K Mem Display is the num ber of kilobytes of RAM dedicated t o the display lists. T he display list h olds th e intermediat e representation of page s to be printed .
The K Mem Disk Cache is t he num ber of kilobyte s of RAM dedicated to the disk cache. This mem ory client speeds file sy stem t hroug hput on any installed hard disks by s t oring frequently used d ata in s y stem memory inst ead of con tinually stori ng it to and retrieving it from a hard disk.
The Fra me Buffer me mory client holds rasterized or bit map ped images of page faces which are ready to be sent to t he print engine. A frame holds the conte nts of each single page imag e. The follow ing form ulas should help you d eterm ine th e mini mu m num- ber of kilobytes required in the f rame buffer for any printin g situat ion.
MB Pri nte r Mem , listed as Sy stem Use on the stat us page, is the number of m egab ytes of RA M ava ilabl e to be split am ong the various memory client s. The size of this cl ient 's mem or y li mits the num ber of jobs that may be queued simul tane ously .

7 Pro fess ional Pri nting About t ypeface s and f onts T ypography term s T ypeface classif icati on Resident fon ts Po s tscript t ypefa ce sam pler.
This chapter defines com mon term s used in the descript i on of fonts and typefaces, and displays the print e r ’s resident typ efaces. Many of the terms and phrases used in desktop publish ing are derived from the language of profession al printe r s and type setters.
One way of classifying the diff erent typef a ces is to group them into the f ollo wing categ ories: A serif is a decorat ive line or ta il on the e nds o f th e strokes of a letter . Serif s, usually on the lower half o f a letter , have also been T referred to as feet o r curlicues.
The terms “mon ospaced” and “fixed-pi tch” refer to a typeface whose characters all have uniform and equal spacing. These typefaces are useful for sp readsheet s and o t her docum ent s with colum nar data. Monospacing is the opposite of proporti onal spacing.
A scalabl e font is one in whi ch each charact er ’s dot pat tern (bitma p) is generated from a mathem atical representation (or outl ine) of the character . Scalable f ont s elimi nate t he need to s tore many diffe rent font sizes. Point size refers to t he heigh t of a proport ional ly spaced typefa ce.
Orientat ion is the d ire ction of t he print or i mage on a page. Port rait orientat ion reads from left to right, across t he narrower dim ension of the page. Land scap e orienta tion also reads from left to right but places the print across the wide r dim ension of the page.
