Use the control panel The control pane l has a VGA touchscreen that provides access to all device functions. Use the bu ttons and numeric keypad to cont rol jobs and the device status.
Home screen The home screen p rovides access to the device features, and it indicates the current status of the device. NOTE Depending on how th e device has been config ured, the featur es that appear on the home screen can vary.
Buttons on the touchscreen The status line on the touchscreen provides informat ion about the status of the device. Various buttons can appear in this a rea. The following table describes each button. Home button . To uch the home button to go to the Home screen from any other screen.
Navigate the Administration menu From the Home scree n, touch Administration to open the menu structure. You might need to scroll to the bottom of the Ho me screen to see this feature. The Administration men u has several sub-menus, wh ich are listed on the left si de of the screen.

Install the printing-system software The MFP comes with a CD tha t contains printer driver and i nstallation software for Windo ws and Macintosh operating systems.
The installer does not support MFP installation or MFP object creatio n on Novell servers. To install your MFP and create ob jects on a Novell serv er, use an HP utilit y (such as HP Web Jetadmin ) or a Novell utility (such as NWAdmin).
If installation fails, reinstall th e software. If this fails, check th e installation notes and readme files on the MFP CD or the flyer t hat ca me in the MFP box, or go to http:// www.

Automatic Configuration If you have modified the device configuration since in stallation, the driver ca n be automatically updated with the new configuration. In the Properties dialog box (se e Open the printer drivers ), on the Device Settings tab, select the Update Now option from the drop-down box to update the driver.

Understand paper and print media use This product supports a variety of paper an d other pr int media in acco rdance with the guidelines in this user guide.
Supported paper and print media sizes This product sup ports a number of pap er sizes, and it adapt s to various media. NOTE To obtain best print results, select the approp riate paper size and type in your print driver before printing.

Special paper or print media guidelines This product supports printing on special medi a. Use the following guidelines to obtain satisfa ctory results. When using special paper or print me dia, be su re to set the type and size in your p rint driver to obtain the best print results.
Load paper and print media You can load different m edia in the trays and then r equest media by type or size by using the con trol panel. Load tray 1 CAUTION To avoid jams, ne ver add or remove media f rom tray 1 during p rinting. 1. Open tr ay 1. 2.

4. Load media into the tray face up. NOTE For best performance, fill the tray completely without sp litting the ream of paper. Splitting the ream can cause a mu ltifeed proble m. The capacity of the paper tray can vary. For example, if you are using 75 g/m 2 (20 lb) paper, the tray holds a full ream of 500 shee ts.
CAUTION Do not print cardstock, enve lopes, heavy or extra heavy paper, or unsu pported sizes of media from the 500 -sheet trays. Print on these ty pes of media on ly from tray 1. Do not overf ill the input tray or open it while it is in use. Doing so can cause paper jams.
Configure trays The MFP automatically pr ompts you to configure a tray for type and size in the follo wing situations: ● When you load pa per into the tray ● When you specify a particul ar tray or.
Configure a tray by using the Supplies Status menu You can also configure the trays for type and size without a prompt from th e MFP. 1. Scroll to and t ouch Supplies Status .
Transparency ● The printer does not stop any pages for sens ing but disting uishes between transparencies (Transparency mode) and p aper (Normal mode).
Select the output bin Standard output bins The MFP has an ADF outp ut bin and the st andard outp ut bin for print ed pages. 1 Standard output bin 2 ADF output bin (for copy originals) When you scan or copy do cuments by using the ADF, the originals are automa tically delivered to the ADF output bin.
1 3–bin mailbox output bins 2 ADF output bin (for copy originals) The top two bins each hold up to 100 sheets of pape r. A senso r stops the MFP when a bin is full. MFP operation continues whe n you empty or reduce the amou nt of media in th e bin. The lower bin ho lds up to 500 sheets of paper.

Job storage features The following job-storage features are available for print jobs : ● Proof and hold jobs : This feature provides a q uick and easy way to print and proof one copy of a job and then print the additional co pies.

To permanentl y store the job and prevent the de vice from deleting it when space is n eeded for something else, select the Stored Job option in the driver.
Use the personal job feature Use the personal printin g feature to specify that a job is not pri nted until you release it. First, set a 4- digit PIN by typi ng the PIN in the printer driver. The PI N is sent to the device as part of the print job. After you have sent the print job to the de vice, you must use the PIN to prin t the job.
Use the QuickCopy feature The QuickCopy feature prints the re quested number of copies of a jo b and stores a copy on the device hard disk. Addition al copies of the job can be printed later . This feature ca n be turned off in the printer driver. The default nu mber of differen t QuickCopy jobs th at can be stored on the device is 32.
Use the stored job feature You can save a print j ob to the device hard disk without printing it. You can then print the job at any time at the device control p anel. For example, you might want to download a personnel form, calen dar, time sheet, or accounting form that othe r users can print when th ey need it.

2. Open the staple-cartridge cover. 3. Grasp the green staple-cartridge handle an d pull the old staple cartridge out of the staple r unit. 4. Insert the new st aple cartridge in to the stapler unit and push down on the gree n handle until the unit snaps into place.
Cancel a print job You can stop a print request by using the control panel or by using the software prog ram. For instruc tions about how to stop a print req uest from a computer on a network, see the online Help for the specific network soft ware. NOTE It can take some time for a ll printing to clear after yo u have canceled a print job.

The HP ImageREt system sets it self apart from the industr y by integrating technolog y advancements and optimizing each element of the print system.
Restrict color use The HP Color LaserJet CM4730 MF P Series includes a Restric t Color setting. A network administrator can use the setting to restrict user access to the colo r printing and copyin g features in ord er to conserve color toner. If you are unable to print in color, see your network admi nistrator.
Paper selection For the best color and image quality, it is important to select the appropriate media type from the MFP menu or fro m the front panel. 140 Chapter 10 Using color ENWW.
Color options Color options enab le optimal color output aut omatically for diverse types of do cuments. Color options use object tagging, wh ich allows optim al color and hal ftone settings to b e used for diff erent objects (text, graphics, and photos) on a page.
sRGB Standard red-gre en-blue (sRG B) is a worldwide color standard orig inally developed by HP and Microso ft as a common co lor language for monitors, inpu t devi ces (scanners, digital ca meras), and output devices (MFPs, printers, plotte rs).
Print in four colors — CMYK Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (C MYK) are the inks use d by a printing press. The process is often called four-color printing. CMYK data files ar e typically used by and originate from graphic ar ts (printing and publishing) environments.
CMYK ink set emulation (PostScript only) The MFP color rende ring of CMYK can be made to e mulate several standard offset press ink sets. In some situations, the CMYK colo r values in an image or document might not be suited to th e MFP. For example, a documen t might be optimized f or another p rinter.
Color matching The process of matching MFP output color to your computer screen is quite complex because printers and computer monitors use different me thods of producing color. Mo nitors display colors by light pixels using an RGB (red, green, blue) color process, but printers print colors using a CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) pro cess.
Most process sample books w ill state which process standar ds were used to p rint the sample b ook. In most cases they will be SWOP, EURO, or DIC. To get optimal color matchi ng to the process sample book, select the correspon ding ink emulation from the MFP menu.
Manage printer color options on Windows computers Setting color options to Au tomatic typically produce s the best possible print q uality for the most common printing require ments. However, for some documents, setting the color options manually can enh ance the way the do cument appears.
● Select AdobeRGB for documents that use the AdobeRGB color space rather than sRGB. For example, some digital ca meras capture images in AdobeRBG, and documents that are produced with Adobe PhotoShop use the AdobeRGB color space.
Halftone options Halftone options affe ct the resolution and clarity of your color output. You can select halftone settings for text, graphics, and photographs indep endently. The two halftone optio ns are Smooth and Detail . ● The Smooth option provides better results for large, solid-f illed print areas.
Manage printer color options on Macintosh computers Setting the color opt ions to Automatic typica lly produces the be st possible print quality f or the most common printing re quirements. However, for some documen ts, setting the color options manually can enhance the wa y the document appe ars.
NOTE Some software programs convert text or graphi cs to raster images. In these cases, the Photographs settings also control text and graphics. Neutral Grays The Neutral Grays setting determines the method that the prin ter uses to create gr ay colors in text, graphics, and ph otographs.

11 Copy This device can function as a stan dalone, walk-up copier. It is not nece ssary to ins tall the printing system software on the computer; you can adjust the copy setting s at the control panel. You can also copy originals by using either the document feeder or the scanner g lass.
Use the Copy screen From the Hom e screen, touch Copy to view the Copy screen. Note that only the first six copy fea tures are immediately visible . In order to view additional co py fe atures, touch More Options .
Set the default copy options You can use the admini stration menu to establish defaul t settings that apply to al l copy jobs. If necessary, you can override most settings for an in dividual job. After that job is complete, the device returns to the default settings.
Basic copy instructions This section provide s the bas ic instructions for copying. Copy from the scanner glass Use the scanner gla ss to make as many as 999 copi es of smal l, lightweight med ia (less than 60 g/ m 2 or 16 lb) or heavy media (mo re than 105 g/m 2 or 28 lb).
Adjust the copy settings The device offers several feature s so you can optimi ze copied o utput. These features are all available on the Copy screen. The Copy screen consists of several pa ges. From the first p age, touch More Options to go to the next page.
Copy two-sided documents Two-sided docume nts can be copied ma nually or automatica lly. Copying two-sided documents manually Copies resulting f rom this procedure ar e printed on one sid e, and need to be hand-c ollated.

Copy mixed-size originals You can copy origina l documents that are printed on differ ent sizes of paper as lo ng as the sheets of paper have one common dim ension. For example, you could combin e letter and legal sizes, or you could combine A4 and A5 sizes.
Change the copy-collation setting You can set the device to automatically collate multip le copies into sets. For example, if you are m aking two copies of three pa ges and the automat ic collation is on, the pages print in th is order: 1,2,3,1,2,3. If automatic collation is off, the page s print in this order: 1,1,2,2,3,3.
Copy photos and books Copy a photo NOTE Photos should be copie d from the flatbed scanner, not from the document fe eder. 1. Lift the lid and place th e photo on the flatbed sc anner with the picture-side down and the u pper- left corner of the photo in the up per-left corner of the glass.
Combine copy jobs by using Job Build Use the Job Build feature to buil d a single copy job from multiple scans . You can use either the docume nt feeder or the scanne r glass. The settings for the first scan are used for subsequent scans. 1. Touch Copy .
Cancel a copy job To cancel the copy jo b that is currently running, touch Stop on the contro l panel. This pauses the device. Then touch Ca ncel Current Job . NOTE If you cancel a copy job, clear the docume nt from the flatbed scanner or from the automatic document fe eder.
12 Scan and send to e-mail The MFP offers color-scanning and digital-sending cap abilities. By using t he control panel, yo u can scan black-and-white or col or documents and send them to an e-mail address as an e-mail atta chment. To use digital send ing, the device must be connected to a loca l area network (LAN).
Configure e-mail settings Before you can send a document to e- mail, you must conf igure the device. NOTE The instructions that follow are for configurin g the device at the control pane l. You can also perform these procedu res by using the embedded We b server.
Test the SMTP settings 1. From the Home screen, touch Administration . 2. Touch Initial Setup . 3. Touch E-mail Setup , and then touch Test Send Gateways . If the configuration is correct, Gate ways OK appears on the control-panel display. If the first test was successful, send an e-mail to yourse lf by using the digital-send feature.
Use the Send E-mail screen Use the touchscreen to navigate through the option s on the Send E-mail screen. 1 Send E-mail button Touching this button scans the document and s ends an e-mail file to the provide d e-mail addresses. 2 Home button Touching this button opens the Home screen.

Use the auto-compl ete function When you type char acters into th e To: , CC: , or From: fields on the Send E-mail screen, the auto- complete function is activated.
Use the address book You can send e-mail to a l ist of recipients by using the address book fea ture of the device. See your system administrator for informatio n about configuring address lists. NOTE You can also use the e mbedded Web serve r (EWS) to create and ma nage the e-mail address boo k.
Add e-mail addresses to the local address b ook 1. Touch Local . 2. Touch . 3. (Optional) Touch the Name field , and in the keyboard that ap pears type a name for the new e ntry. Touch OK . The name is the alias for the e-mail addre ss. If you do not type an alias name, the alias wil l be the e-mail address itself.

Configure and use the fax features Before you ca n use the fax features, you must configure them in the control-panel menus. Configure alerts You can use HP Web Jetadmin or the MFP’s embedded Web server to configure the system to alert you of problems with the MF P. The alerts take the form of e-mail messages to the e-mail account or accounts that you specify.
Upgrade the firmware The MFP has remote firmware update (RFU) capability. Use the informat ion in this section to upgrade the MFP firmware. Determine the current firmware version 1. From the control p anel Home screen, scroll to and to uch Administration .
4. Locate the do wnloaded .R FU file for th e MFP. 5. Drag and drop the .RFU file onto the PORT1 icon in the bro wser window. NOTE The MFP turns off and then on automatically to activate the update. When the update process is complete, a Ready message displays on the MFP control panel.

Cleaning the AD F delivery system Clean the ADF only if it is visibly marked or dirty, or if you are experiencin g a decrease in copy quality (such as stre aking). Clean the ADF delivery system 1. Open the sca nner lid. 2. Locate the white, vinyl ADF backing.

Calibrate the scanner Calibrate the scanner to compensate for offsets in the scanner imaging system (carriage head) for ADF and flatbed scans. Be cause of mechanical tolerances , the scanner's carriage head might n ot read the position of the image accurately.

Solving general problems If the MFP is n ot responding p roperly, complete th e steps in the follow ing checklist, in ord er. If the MFP does not pass a st ep, follow the corre sponding trouble shooting sugges tions. If a st ep resolves the problem, you can stop without performing the other steps on the checklist.
8. Print a shor t document from a different program tha t has worked in the past. If this solution works, then the problem is with the prog ra m you are using. If this solution does not work (the document does not print) complete the se steps: a. Try printing the j ob from another comput er th at has the MFP software installed.

Control-panel message types Four types of control-panel m essages can indicate the status of or problems with the device. Clear staple jams Occasionally, stapl es become jammed in the stapler/s tacker. If jobs are not being stapled correctly or are not bei ng stapled at all, use this procedure to clear staple jams. 1. Turn off the MFP. 2. Press and hold the release button on the top of the stapler/stacker.
6. Remove the staples tha t protrude from the staple cartridge. 7. Close the lever at the back of the staple cartridge. Be sure that it snaps into place. 8. Reinsert the staple cartridge into the staple-c artridge holder, and push down on the green handle until it snaps int o place.

Solve problems with output accessories When the 3-bin mailbox or the sta pler/stacker is ins talled correctly with th e output accessory b ridge, the LED at the top of the accessory is green. If the LED is off, is blinking, or is amber, a proble m exists.
Solve network connectivity problems If the MFP is havi ng problems communicating with the network, use the informa tion in this section to resolve the problem. Solve network p rinting problems NOTE HP recommends tha t you use the MFP CD to install and set up the MFP on a network.

E Install memory and print server cards The MFP has two 200-pin DDR SDRAM slots. One slot is filled; a 128 or 256 MB DDR memory module can be inserte d in the open slot. The MFP also has three flash memory card slots for MFP firmware, fonts, and other sol utions.
Install memory and fonts You can install more memory for th e MFP, and you can also install a font card to allow the MFP to print characters for languages such as Chinese or the Cyrillic alphabet.
3. Locate the gray formatter pressure release tabs on the formatter board in the rea r of the MFP. 4. Gently squeeze the tabs and pull them out of the formatter. 5. Gently pull on the bla ck tabs to pull the formatte r board from the MFP. Place the forma tter board on a clean, flat , grounded surface.
6. To replace a DDR DIMM tha t is currently installed, spread the latches apa rt on each side of the DIMM slot, lift the DDR DIMM u p at an angle, and pull it o ut. 7. Remove the new DIMM from the a ntistatic package . Locate the alignment notch on the bott om edge of the DIMM.
9. Push down on the DIMM until both latches engage the DIMM. NOTE If you have difficult y inserting the DI MM, make sure the no tch on the botto m of the DIMM is aligned with the bar in the slot. If the DIMM still does not go in, make sure you are using the correct t ype of DIMM.
11. Reinsert the formatter pressure release ta bs by squeezing them togeth er and pushing them into place. 12. Reconnect the power cable an d interf ace cables, and turn the MFP on.
CAUTION Do not insert a flash memory card that i s designed for use with a di gital camera into the MFP. The MFP does not support photo printing directly from a flash memory card. If you install a camera-type flash memory card, the cont rol panel displays a message asking if you want to reformat the flash memory ca rd.
3. Locate the gray for matter pressure release tabs on the forma tter board in the rear of the MFP. 4. Gently squeeze th e tabs and pull them out of the formatter. 5. Gently pull on the bl ack tabs to pull the forma tter board from the MFP. Place the formatter boa rd on a clean, fla t, grounded surface.
6. Align the groove on the side of the fla sh memory card with the notches in the conne ctor and push it in the slot until it is fully seated. CAUTION Do not insert the flash memory card at an angle. NOTE The first flash memory slot marked "Firmw are Slot" is reserved for firmwa re only.
8. Reinsert the formatter pressure release tabs by squeezing them toge ther and pushing them into place. 9. Reconnect the power cable and interf ace cables, and tu rn the MFP on. Enabling memory If you installe d a memory DIMM, set the MFP driver to recognize the newly added memory.
Enable memory for Windows 2000 and XP 1. On the Start menu, point to Settings , and click Printers or Printers and Faxes . 2. Right-clic k the printer an d select Properties . 3. On the Device Settings tab, click Printer Memory (in the Installable Options section) .
Install an HP Jetdirect or EIO print server card The HP Color La serJet CM4730 MFP is equipped with an embedded HP Jetdirect print server port. If desired, you can i nstall an additional I/O card in the ava ilable EIO slot. 1. Turn the MFP of f. 2. Disconnect all power and interface cables.
3. Locate an open EIO slot. Loosen and remove the two reta ining screws holding the cover for the EIO slot, and then re move the cover. You will no t need these screws and the cover agai n. They can be discarded. 4. Firmly inser t the HP Jetdirec t print server ca rd into the EIO slo t.
6. Connect th e network cable. 7. Reconnect the power cabl e, and turn the MFP on. 8. Print a configur ation page. In addition to an MF P configuration page and a Sup plies Status page, an HP Jetdirect co nfiguration pa ge that contains network config u ration and status information should also print.
