1 Welcome Thank you for purchasing an HP Photosmart Pro B9100 serie s printer. Designed especially f or professional and serious a mateur photographers, th is printer provides the foll owing advanced .
– Order supplies – Start HP Photosmart Premier software After you have installed the HP Ph otosma rt prin ter software on a computer, open and explore the HP Solution Center. Windows : Right- click the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon on the Wi ndows taskbar, and then click Launch/Show HP Solution Cen ter .
Back of printer 1 USB port : Use this port to connect the printer to a computer. 2 Ethernet port : Use this port to connect the p rinter to a network. 3 Rear door : Remove this door to clear paper jams.
Paper trays 1 Main tray : Place a stack of photo paper, plain paper, or other non-rigid media in this tray for printing. Load the media in portrait orientation and with the side to be printed facing down . Squeeze the main tray release to lengthen or shorten the main tray, depending on the size of paper you are loading.
Main tray 1 Paper-width gu ide : Adjust this guide to fit close to the left edge of the paper in the tray by pressing the button on the front of the guide and sliding the guide across. 2 Paper-size markings : Refer to these markings to guide you for loading paper in the correct orientation.
Control pa nel 1 Printer screen : Use this screen to view menus and messag es. 2 Menu : Press to view the printer menu. 3 Previous : Press to navigate to a previous menu option. 4 OK : Press to select a menu option or respond to a pr ompt on the printer screen.
● Network settings : – Show IP address : Select this option to vi ew the printer IP a ddress (a numeric address that ident ifies the printer on a network). – Print network settings page : Select this optio n to print a network conf iguration page that you can use to troubleshoot network con nections or for the initi al network setup.

If you extended or removed the mai n tray to load paper, push in the main tray to the end of the paper by squ eezing the release and pushi ng in the tray, and push th e tray back into the print er until it is fully seated.
For information on loading can vas media, see To load canvas in the specialt y media tray . For all other types of media, see T o load the specialty media tray . Note You do not need to remove medi a from the main tray before you us e the specialty media tray.
Align the right edge of the media ag ainst the raised ed ge of the tray and not against the side of the pri nter. Misaligned media can result in skewing or other printing problems, including pape r jams. Tip If the media is curled, you can open the top door to check th at the media feeds under the roll ers smoothly.
2. Pull out the out put tray extension by holding t he output tray with on e hand and pulling out the ex tension with your other hand. Flip up the paper ca tch at the en d of the output tray extensi on to prevent paper from falling onto the floor. 3. Load one sheet of canvas media with the side to be printed faci ng up on the specialty media tray.
b. Feed the media into the printer until t he back edge of the media (th e edge nearest you) is l ined up with the dashed wh ite line on the tray. F or large sizes of media, the media w ill project through the rear paper sl ot at the back of the printer.
Note Store media in a pl astic bag to prevent curling. 5. Press OK on the printer. Note When you print on ce rtain types of media, the printer doe s not fully eject the media from the pr inter. Grasp the media with b oth hands and pull it from the front of the prin ter.
Supported s izes Both trays support paper sizes ranging from 7.6 x 12. 7 cm to 32 x 48 cm (3 x 5 inches to 13 x 19 inches), inclu ding: Metric ● 10 x 15 cm (with or without tab) ● Panorama 10 x 30.
Envelopes ● Envelope No . 10 ● A2 envelope ● C6 envelope ● DL envelope Warning Do not load media thicker than 1.5 mm, as i t can damage the printer.
To print from a software progr am (Windows) 1. Make sure you have paper loaded correctly. 2. On the File menu in your soft ware progra m, click Prin t . 3. Select the HP Photosmart Pro B9100 series as the printer. If you have already set the HP Photosma rt Pro B9100 series as the default pri nter, you can skip this step.
Change the print spe ed or quality To change the print spe ed or quality (Windows) 1. Open the Printer Properties d ialog box. 2. Click th e Featur es tab.
4. In the Paper Type pop-up menu, click t he appropriate paper type. 5. Choose any other pri nt settings that you want, and th en click Print . Print in grayscale You can print documents or ph otos in grayscale for dram atic black and white photos. To print in graysc ale (Windows) 1.

The print preview area in th e plug-in dial og box displays th e current image in a scaled size in its true aspect ratio.

Setting When to use it Tip Do not use this mode if you are also using I CC profiles and your software program to manage color. This can decre ase the color fidelity since the colors are converted twice—f irst by the software program an d then by the printer.

Check the ink levels To check the ink leve ls from the printer 1. Press Menu on the printe r. 2. Press until you see Show ink level percentage on the printer screen. 3. Press OK . 4. Press to see the pe rcentage of ink remaining in each ink cartridge.
If you are replacing ink cart ridges, check that you are using the correct cartridges. To replace th e ink cartridges 1. Open the in k cartridge door by pressing the raised bumps at the top of the door until the door clicks open. 2. Remove the ink cartridges t hat need to be replaced.
Note All eight cartridg es and four printheads must be correctly in stalled for the printer to work. If this is the first time yo u are installin g the ink cartri dges and printheads, see the Quick Start guide for information on the ini tial set up of ink cartridges and pri ntheads.
To replace pr intheads 1. Open the t op door. 2. Press and hold OK until the printhead assembly mo ves to the left side of th e printer and stops. 3. Raise th e blue printhead assembly cover. Before you begin, noti ce the metal bar that holds down the cover.
7. Remove and discard the or ange protective covers from the printhead . Do not touch the gold-colored con tacts on the printhea d. 8. Open the p re-moistened swab included i nside the printhead package. 9. Wipe the print head nozzles with the foam tip of the swab.
11. Lower the open pr inthead assembly cover so that it clips under the metal bar, a nd then fold the cover b ack down to its original posit ion. 12. Close the to p door.
Do not clean inside the prin ter Clean the prin theads automatically If you notice white l ines or single-color streaks on the photos you print, the printheads might need t o be cleaned. To clean the printh eads automatically 1. Press Menu on the printe r control panel.
To clean the printhead nozzles 1. Gather the following items to clean the n ozzles on the printheads: – Distilled wa ter (tap water might contai n contaminants that can dam age the ink cartridge). – Cotton swabs or o ther soft, lint-free mate rial that will not sti ck to the ink cartridge.

Note The ink leve ls shown on the test page are an estimate only. Actual ink volumes may vary. Print a sample page You can print a sample page to verif y that the printer can successfully print a photo.
3. Choose H ewlett-Packard , point to Photosmart , and then click HP Photosmart Update . 4. Follow the on screen instructions to check for software updates. If you are behind a f irewall, you need to enter the pro xy server information in the updater.
5 Troubleshooting The printer is d esigned to be reliable and easy to use, but if yo u have any problems, refer to this section for po ssible solutions.
The Found New Hardwar e Wizard opens but doesn’t recognize the printer (Windows only) Cause You might have connected the USB cable be fore completing the softwa re installation . Solution Disconnect the USB cable and restart the software installation.
The Attention li ght flashed amber br ie fly after I turned the printer off Solution This is a normal part o f the power-down process; it does not indicate a problem with the printer. The printer is plugged i n but will not turn on Solution ● The printer might have drawn too much power.
try reducing the number of sheet s in the main tray to 20 sheets, or use the specialty me dia tray to prin t on one sheet at a time. ● Remove the main tray from th e printer and check that the paper stack i s lying flat in the t ray, and has not been pushed up over t he paper stops.
Colors are not prin ting satisfactorily Solution ● A cartridge is out of ink. Replace it. ● Some of the ink nozzles on th e printheads are clogged. Cle an the printheads. See Clean the print heads automatically . ● The color management settings of the printer might no t be set properly.
Print quali ty is poor Solution ● Use photo paper desig ned for the printer. For best results, use HP Advanced Photo Paper. ● You might be printing on the wron g side of the paper. Make sure the paper i s loaded in the main tray with the side to be printed facing down or in the specialty medi a tray with the side to be printed f acing up .
Paper errors Before contacting HP sup port, read this section for troubleshoot ing tips or go to the online support services at www.hp.com/sup port . The name of HP sup port services may vary by country/region.
Error mess age: Automatic paper sensor failed. Solution The automatic pape r sensor is obstructed or damaged. Try movi ng the printer out of dire ct sunlight, and then press OK and try prin ting again. If this does not work, go to www.hp.com/support or contact HP support.
Error message : Non-optimal alignm ent. To realign – select Align p rintheads. Press OK to co ntinue. Solution Printhead align ment wa s unsuccessful . Select Align printheads , and then press OK to perform the pri nthead alignment again. For best result s, make sure you have loaded HP Advanced Photo Paper - Gloss y .
Error messa ge: Replace the fo llowing ink cartridg e(s) soon —OR— The ink in the following ink c artridge(s) is nearing its expir ation date —OR— The original HP ink in the following ink cartridge(s) has been depl eted. Solution Press OK to continue, or replace the specified cartridge(s).

A Networking The instructions in this section describe how to in stall the printer in an ether net (wired) network. A wired setup allows the printer to communicate with comp uters through a router, hub, or switch. Broadband Internet access is required in order to take full advantage of the printer feature set.

Ethernet network with Inte rnet access by dial-up modem The computers and printer communicate with eac h other, forming a simple networ k, through a hub. One of the computers has access to the Internet through a modem and dial-up account. None of the other networked devices, including the prin ter, has direct access to the Internet.
After you finish connecting the printer to the netwo rk, install the printer software. You cannot print from a computer until you do the software installation .
