8 CONTROLS & FEATURES CONTROLS Engine Switch ENGINE SWITCH OFF ON The engine switch enables and disables the ignition system. The engine switch must be in the ON position for the engine to run. Turning the engine switch to the OFF position stops the engine.

11 CONTROLS & FEATURES FEATURES Oil Alert System (applicable engine types) If the engine stops and will not restart, check the engine oil le vel (page ) before troubleshooting in other ar eas. The Oil Alert system is designed to prevent engine damage caused by an insufficient amount of oi l in the crankcase.
12 BEFORE OPERAT ION IS YOUR ENGINE READY TO GO? Check the General Condition of the Engine For your safety, and to maximize the service life of your equipment, it is very important to take a few moments before you operate the engine to check its cond ition.
13 BEFORE OPERATION Check the Engine Check the Equipment Power ed by This Engine Check the engine oil level (see pag e ). Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage. The Oil Alert system (applicable engine types) will automatically stop the engine bef ore the oil level falls below safe li mits.

15 OPERATION CHOK E LEVER THROTTL E LEVER S S L L O O W W C C L L O O S S E E D D Move the choke lever to the CLOSED position. Always use the choke when starting the engine. Some engine applications use a remotely-mounted choke control rather than the engine-mounted choke lever shown her e.
16 OPERATION ON ENGINE SWITCH START ER GRIP Turn the engine switch to the ON position. Operate the starter. Pull the starter grip lightly u ntil you feel re sistance, then pull briskly.

18 OPERATION STOPPING THE ENGINE THROTTL E LEVER ENGINE SWITCH OFF SLOW To stop the engine in an emergency, simply turn the engine switch to the OFF position. Under normal condi tions, use the foll owing procedure. Move the throttle lever to the SLOW position.

Some of the most important safety precautions follow. However, w e cannot warn you of every conceivable hazard that can ari se in performing maintenance.

23 SERVICING YOUR ENGINE FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS Use LPG with a propane content of 95% or higher. This engine is certified to operate on LPG only. Occasionally you may hear a light ‘‘spark knock’’ o r ‘‘pinging ’’ (metallic rapping noise) while operating under heavy loads.
24 SERVICING YOUR ENGINE ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK LOWER LIMIT UPPER LI MIT FILLER CAP /DIP STICK Check the engine oil level with the engine stopped and in a level position.
25 SERVICING YOUR ENGINE ENGINE OIL CHANGE FILLER CAP / DIPSTI CK OIL LEVE L DRAIN PL UG Drain the used oil while the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely. 1.16 US qt (1.10 ) Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage.
26 SERVICING YOUR ENGINE ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATIONS Oil is a major factor affecting performance and service life. Use 4-stroke automotive detergent oil that is designed for engines operating on LPG. For operation in temperatur es below 32°F (0°C), 5W-30 synthetic oil may be used for easier starting.
27 SERVICING YOUR ENGINE AIR FILTER INSPECTION PAPER FILTER ELEMENT FOAM FILTER ELEMENT Remove the air cleaner cover and inspect the filter elements. Clean or replace dirty filter elements. A lways replace damaged filter elements. Refer to page for instructions that apply to the air cleaner and filter service.
28 SERVICING YOUR ENGINE AIR CLEANER SERVICE AIR CLEANE R COVER PAPER FILTER ELEMENT FOAM FILTER ELEMENT GASKET WING NUTS A dirty air filter w ill restrict air flow to the c arburetor, reducing engine performance. If you operate the engine in very dusty areas, clean the air filter more often than specified in the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.
29 SERVICING YOUR ENGINE Wipe dirt from the inside of the air cleaner base and cover, using a moist rag. Be caref ul to prevent dirt f rom entering the air duc t that leads to the carburetor. Place the foam air filter element over the paper element, and reinstall the assembled air filter.
− − − − 30 SERVICING YOUR ENGINE SPARK PLUG SERVICE SPARK P LUG WRENCH 0.028 0.031 in (0.70 0.80 mm ) BPR6ES W20EPR-U An incorrect spark plug can cause engine damage. Disconnect the spark plug cap, and remove any dirt from around the spark plug area.
− + − 31 SERVICING YOUR ENGINE IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT THROT TLE STOP SCRE W A loose spark plug can overheat and damage t he engine. Overtightening the spark plug can damage the threads in the cylinder head. After the spark plug seats, tighten with a 13/16-inch spark plug wrench to comp ress the washer.

35 HELPFUL TIPS & SUGGESTIONS Removal From Storage With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the engine to keep out dust. A hot engine and exhaust system can ig nite or melt some materials. Do not use sheet plas tic as a dust c over. A nonporous c over will trap moisture around the engine, pr omoting rust and corrosion.
36 HELPFUL TIPS & SUGGESTIONS TRANSPORTING If the engine has been running, allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes before loading the engine-powered equipment on the transpor t vehicle. A hot engine and exhau st system can burn you and can ignite some materia ls.
