GB - 7 Keep children out of the work area a nd under the watchful care of a responsible adult . AL WA YS operate unit when there is good visibility and light. DO NOT mow wet grass. AL WA YS be sure of your footing. Keep a firm hold on handlebar . W a lk, NEVER run.
GB - 8 On self-propelled models, releasing wheel drive control m ust stop mower ’s forward movement. If this feature fails to operate, disconnect spark plug wire an d repair before using unit. On self-propelled models, wheel drive must be disengaged when starting engine.
GB - 9 An extension spring, when extended, stores energy and can be dangerous. Always use tools specifically designed for instal ling or removing an extension spring. Always compress or extend springs slowly . Before tipping unit, remove fuel. Use extra care when loading or unloading unit onto trailer or t ruck.
GB - 10 ASSEMBL Y 1. Remove all packing materials and straps from unit. 2. Remove one pair of nuts and bolt s from the handlebars. 3. Rot ate the handlebar int o the operating position and c onnect the two braces to the handlebars. 4. Replace the nut s removed in step 1 and then tighten all f our nuts.

GB - 12 CONTROLS AND FEA TURES See Figure 6 for locations. Park ing Br ake Le ver ( Right H and Lever) Hold the parking brake l ever against the handlebar to release the wheel lock pin and operate the unit. Release the parking brake lever to engage wheel lock pin and pr event the unit from rolling forward or backward.
GB - 13 Align the open ends of the spacers with the flats on the caster s pindle and remove the spacers one at a time until enough are left at the bottom for the desired cutting height. Remove the lock pin while supporting the caster arm. Lower the arm on top of the remaining spacers.
GB - 14 Forward Drive Control (Lower Right Hand Control) NOTE: Engine must be running for wheel drive to propel unit. T o drive forward: Hold the parking brake l ever against the handlebar and slowly sq ueeze and hold the forward drive contro l. Hold the forward drive control against the handlebar for f astest speed.
GB - 15 IMPORT ANT : Excessively oxygenated or reformulated fuels (fuels blended with alcohols or ethers ) can damage the fuel system or caus e performance problem s. If any undesirable operating problems occur , use a gasoline with a l ower percent age of alcohol or ether .
GB - 16 Gravely Dealers will provi de any service, parts or adjustments which may be required to keep your unit operating at peak eff iciency . Should engine require se rvice, contact a Gravely Dealer or an authorized engine manufacturer's service center .
GB - 17 T o inst all blade: 1. Install mower blades on mow er deck with mounting hardwa re. 2. T orque 5/8-inch nut t o 92 to 130 lbf-ft (125 to 176 N•m ). 3. Connect spark plug wire. Sharpen the Mowe r Blades 1. Remove mower blade from unit. Discard mower blade if: • More than 1/2 in.
GB - 18 CHECK DRIVE BEL T S Check drive belts and replace if worn or damaged. See Wheel Drive Belts on page 20. CHECK F ASTENERS Check all fasteners for proper tightness. Pay special attention to blade hardware and all guards, shields and safety devices.
GB - 19 PTO CLUTCH 1. T est the PTO clutch adjustme nt. With the clutch disengaged, the blade brake pad should touch the upper pulley . With the clutch engaged, the blade brake pad should not touch the upper pulley and the deck belt should be under tension.
GB - 20 BELT REPLACEMENT Wheel Drive Belt s 1. S top engine, remove key , wait for all moving parts to stop and hot p arts to cool. 2. Raise and support the rear of the unit . 3. Remove the rear cover and disconnect the neutral return springs from the spring anchors.
GB - 21 PTO Belt 1. S top engine, remove key , wait for all moving parts to stop and hot p arts to cool. 2. Remove the two drive belts from engine pulley . See Wheel Drive Belts on page 20. 3. Remove the belt cover from the deck. 4. Disconnect the two idler springs from the spring anchors.
GB - 22 SERVICI NG TH E BA TT E RY NOTE: Unit comes equipped with a maintenance-free battery that requires no regular maintenance except cleaning the terminals. Battery Remov al and Inst allation Remove (Fi gure 18) 1. Remove the battery cover. 2. Disconnect negative (–) cable first, then positive (+) cable.
GB - 23 4. Connect positive (+) c able first, then negative (–) cable. 5. Apply petroleum jelly or dielectric grease to battery cable ends and terminals. 6. Replace belt cover. Charging the B attery Follow First Aid directions for contact wit h battery fluid.
