Switch ports can be grouped together using techno logies such as Cisc o Gigab it EtherChannel, IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggr egation, Bay Network Multilink T runking, and Extreme Ne twork Load Sharing.
122 For switch-independent teaming modes, all physical ad apters that make up a virtual adapter must use the unique MAC address assigned to them when transmitting data. That is, the frames that are sent by each of the physical adapters in the team must us e a unique MAC address to be IEEE compliant.
4 Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet T eaming Services 123 E Smart Load Balancing enables both transmit and receive load balancing based on the Layer 3/Layer 4 IP address and TCP/UDP por t number . In other words, the load balancing is not done at a byte or frame level but on a TCP/UDP session basis.
124 T ransmit traffic through a router will be load balanced as tran smit load bala ncing is based on the source and destination IP address and TCP/UDP por t number . Since routers do not alter the source and destination IP address, the load balancing algorithm works as intended.

130 4.4 T eaming Mechanisms 4.4.1 Architecture The Broadcom Ad vanced Server Program (BASP) is implemented as an NDI S intermediate driver (refer to "• T eaming Across Switche s W ithout an Interswitch Link" ( J pg.141)). It oper ates below protocol stacks such as TCP/IP and IPX and app ears as a virtual adapter .

For outbound traffic, every packet is first classifie d into a flow , and then distributed to the selec ted physical adapter for transmission.
132 On the inbound code path, the Inbound Flow Head Hash T able is also designed to allow concurrent access. The link lists of Inbound Flow Entries are only referenced in the event of processing A RP packets and the periodic load ba lancing. There is no per packet reference to the Inbound Flo w Entries.

134 • Applications The SLB algo rithm is most approp riate in home and small business environments where cost is a concern, or with commodity switching equipmen t. SLB teaming works with un managed Layer 2 switches and is a cost-effective way of getting re dundancy and link aggreg ation at the server.

It does not support connecting to a rou ter or Layer 3 switches since the ports must be on the same subnet.

Mixed speed refers to the capability of t eaming adapters that are running at different link speeds.
138 4.7 Te a m i n g a n d O t h e r A d vanced Networking Properties Before creating a team, adding or removing team members, or changing advanced settings of a te am member , make sure each team member has been co nfigured in a similar way . Settings to check include VLANs and QoS Packet T a gging, Jumbo Frames, and the vari ous offloads.
4 Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet T eaming Services 139 E Checksum Offload Checksum Off load is a property of the Broadcom network adapters that allows the TCP/IP/UDP checksums for send and receive tr affic to be calcul ated by the adapter hard ware rather than by the host CPU.
140 Preboot Execution Environm ent The Preboot Execution Env ironment (PXE) allows a system to boot from an operating system image over the network. By definition, PXE is invoked before an operating sy stem is loaded, so there is no opportunity for the BASP intermediate driver to load and enable a team.

142 • T eaming Across Switches With Interconnect "• T eaming Across Switches With Interconnect" ( J pg.142) represents a failover event in which the cable is unplugged on the T op Switc h port 4. This is a successful fa ilover with all stations pinging each other without loss of connectivity .
4 Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet T eaming Services 143 E 4.8.3 Spanning T ree Algorithm In Ethernet networks, only one active path may ex ist betwee n any two bridges or switches. Multiple active paths between switches can cause loops in the network. Wh en loops occur , some switches recognize stations on both sides of the switch.
144 4.8.4 T opology Change Notice (TCN) A bridge/switch creates a forwarding table of MA C addresses and port numbers by learning the source MAC address that received on a particul ar port. The table is used to forward frames t o a specific port rather than flooding the fra me to all ports.
4 Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet T eaming Services 145 E 4.8.5 Port F ast/Edge Port T o reduce the effect of TCNs on the network (for example, increasing flooding on switch ports), end nodes that are powered on/off often should use the Port Fast or Edge Port setting on the switch port they are attached to.
146 4.8.9 SLB T eams SLB teams are the only teaming type not dependant on switch configur ation. The server intermediate driver handles the load balancing and fault tolerance mechanisms with no assistance from the switch.

148 T roubleshooting Guidelines Before you call for su pport, make sure you have completed the followin g steps for troubleshooting network connectivity proble ms when the server is using adapter teaming. • Make sure the link light is ON for ever y adapter and all the cables are atta ched.

However , this practice is not recommended for normal operation because the performance would be degraded due to hub limitations.
150 Can I configure NLB an d teaming concurrently? Y es, but only when running NLB in a multicast mode (NLB is not supported with MS Cluster Services).

176 5.5 Configuring T eaming The teaming function allows y ou to grou p any ava ilabl e network adapters together to function as a team. T eami ng is a method of creating a vi rtual LAN (a group of multiple adapte rs that functions as a single adapter).
5 Broadcom Advanced Control Suite 2 (BACS2) 177 E 5.5.1 Using the Broadcom T eaming Wizard Y ou can use the Broadcom T eaming Wizard to create a team, configure an existing team if a team has already been created, or create a VLA N.
178 4 Select the type of team you want to create and then click [Next]. If the team type is an SLB type team, click [Nex t]. If the team type is not an SLB type team, then a dialog box appears. V erify that the network switch connected to the team members is confi gured correctly for the team type, click [OK], a nd continue.
5 Broadcom Advanced Control Suite 2 (BACS2) 179 E The Large Send Of fload (LSO) and Checksum Of fload (CO) columns indicate if the LSO and/or the CO properties are supported (Y) or not supported (N) for the adapter . The LSO and CO properties are enabled for a team only when all of the members support and are configured for the featur e.

The Auto-Fallback Disable mode feature allow s the team to contin ue usin g the standby member rather than switching back to the primary member if the primary member comes back online. T o enable this feature, click "Enable Auto-F allback Disable mode" and then click [Next].
