Network Health Introduction 3 3-7 Interpretin g Erro r Resu lts Col lision s A collision is the res ult of two or more nodes trans mitting at the same t ime on the s egment. Col lisions are not necess arily bad. They are a normal part of Etherne t’s operation.
OneTouch Series II Users M anual 3-8 If the percenta ge of frames with a bad FCS is greater than 1%, t hen it shou ld be cons idered a ser ious problem that is affec ting netw ork throughput. A given rate of bad FCS frames has a muc h more serious effect on netw ork throug hput than a s imilar collis ion rate.
Network Health Introduction 3 3-9 environment, a local s tation is o ne that is in the s ame broadcast dom ain as the N etwork Ass istant. A remote stati on is one th at is not on the same Ethern et segment or br oadcast dom ain as the N etwork Ass istant.

4-1 Chapter 4 Cable Tests Introduction The Network As sistant quic kly identi fies the mos t common c able and wirin g faults on tw isted pair cab ling systems and automatica lly tests all four pairs. It also detects fiber optic cable and en ables y ou to begin f iber tests if a fi ber optic modu le is detec ted.
OneTouch Series II Users M anual 4-2 Cable Autotest Press ( Cable Autotest ) to measure ca ble len gth, detect split pairs, and/ or perform a w iremap test. T he Network As sistant does not m easure c able length wh en it detects a li nk pulse ( i.e., when con nected to a n active device s uch as a Hub).
Cable Tests Introduction 4 4-3 The Wiremap C able tes t can be r un as a s tandalone tes t or automatic ally when y ou run Cable Aut otest or A utoTest.
OneTouch Series II Users M anual 4-4 If you explic itly run t he Wiremap C able tes t while th e far end of the cable is attac hed to a Hub, you m ay see unexpected r esults lik e wires shorted toget her. This is a normal side effect of forcin g a wirem ap to be done on a remote devic e other than a Cable I dentifier .
Cable Tests Introduction 4 4-5 Twisted Pair Cab les Twisted pair c able is c urrently the m ost popular c able in LAN system s. The 1 0BASE-T standa rd for twist ed p air cabl ing system s i s much more popular tha n coaxial based Ethernet network s because it is easi er to work with a nd is inherently m ore reliable .
OneTouch Series II Users M anual 4-6 Reversed Pa ir A cable pair is reversed w hen two indiv idual wir es of a pair are reversed fr om end-to-end , as shown i n Figure 4-3. A reversed pair is not nec essarily a c atastrophic failure. Some 10BASE-T adapt er cards and Hubs can sens e the reversed pol arity and conti nue to op erate.
Cable Tests Introduction 4 4-7 The sym ptoms of a split p air range from non-existent t o a compl ete lack o f co mmu ni cati on. In some ca ses a sp li t pair cable m ay work just fin e for 10BASE-T but not at al l for 100BASE-TX. 3 6 4 5 3 6 4 5 ace406f.
