Theory of Operation Overall Fun ction al Descrip tion 3 3-3 The transcondu ctance ampli fier is a three -stage, cl osed-lo op amplif ier whos e feedba ck signal is p roport ional to th e 5220A outpu t (load) c urrent. I t consists of the A5 Pream p, the A6 Driver, the A7 Output, and a precisio n four-t ermina l shunt.

Digit al Section The logic p ortion of the 5220A con trols the seq uencing o f input re lays ( front /rear) and other con trol sign als tha t turn the trans conducta nce amp lifier o n and off . It also p rovides drive co mmands to light appropria te fron t panel status LEDs.
Theory of Operation Circ uit An alys is 3 3-5 The A4 Regu lator is designed to conve rt the ac outpu ts fro m the thre e remain ing secondary w indings of T1 into th ree se ts of isol ated and reg ulated voltag es: +5 V dc, +15/-15 V dc, and +5 V dc ISO ( isolated).
5 2 20A Instruction M anua l 3-6 3-8. Preamplifier The A5 Preampl ifier, as shown i n Figure 3-4, is a high-gain amplif ier des igned to acc ept a front/re ar pane l input signal and prov ide an ampl ified outp ut to the A6 Drive r stag e of the tran sconduc tance ampl ifier.

A8 Analog Control The A8 Analog Contro l Assembly, a s shown in F igure 3 -7, contain s an over compliance detector, an ove rcurrent detector and two TTL -to-FET level sh ifters. The detection circuits are used to switch th e 5220A to standby whe n an over curren t or ove rcomplian ce condition oc curs.

Failure St atus Logic The failure statu s logic cons ists o f three D-t ype flip-f lop (U16 -1, U16-13, and U17-13) and their as socia ted logic ga tes and d rivers. I ts func tion is to store failu re conditi ons detected by o ther pa rts of the A1 0 Logic and to drive t he fron t panel STATUS ind icators.

5 22 0A Instruction M anua l 4-8 Caution To ensure proper instrumen t operation make sure that both screws are installed and that they are both in either the FRONT or REAR locations. 1. Disconnec t the 5220A from line power. 2. Remove both th e top and large inner cover s from th e 5220A.
Maintenance Perform ance Test 4 4-9 4-22. Front Panel Tests Use the fo llowing p rocedure to check the opera tion of the 5220A f ront-pa nel contro ls and LEDs: 1. With th e unit in the stan dby mode, connect jumpe r wires betwe en the en abled (front/r ear) ou tput ter minals .
5 2 20A Instruction M anua l 4-10 4-24. DC Accuracy and Line Regulation The follow ing proce dure is use d to chec k the dc accurac y of the 5220A outpu t curre nt: 1. Connect the pr ecisio n shunt to the en abled ou tput te rminals on the 522 0A. 2. Connect th e DVM to the sen se ter minals on the pre cision shunt.
Maintenance Perform ance Test 4 4-11 7. Set the 5220A to the st andby mod e. 8. Disconnect th e load r esistor a nd the dist ortion ana lyzer fro m the 5220A out put terminal s.
5 2 20A Instruction M anua l 4-12 4. Increase th e ac vol tage ca libra tor outp ut in 1.0V r ms incr ements. The 5 220A should switch to the standby mod e at between 20.0 and 24.0 V rms. The OVERCURRENT LED should also l ight. 5. Set the ac vo ltage ca libra tor ou tput to zero volts.

5 2 20A Instruction M anua l 4-14 4-33. Output Bias Adjustment This procedur e is used to adjust the bias cu rrent for both the A6 Drive r and the A7 Output. The b ias adjust ment (R13) is loc ated on the A6 Driver PCB Ass embly. 1. Connect th e ac vol tage calib rator to the front-p anel VO LTAGE IN PUT term inals on the 5220A.
