1 INTRODUCTION Thank you f or purchasing an Eagle ® AccuMap 12™. With its large LCD screen, easy to use menus , and outstanding performance, we think y ou’ll be happ y with this product f or man y y ears . The AccuMap 12 can be used f or fishing, hiking, canoeing, offshore boat- ing, and just about any other ground-based activity .
2 INST ALLA TION The AccuMap 12 operates from six AA batteries or from 6 to 35 volts DC . An optional cigarette lighter adapter is av ailable (model CA-1) to plug into a vehicle’ s electrical system.
3 B A TTER Y INST ALLA TION The AccuMap 12 requires six AA batteries. W e recommend DURA CELL ® alkaline batteries, b ut other brands will work. Y ou can use lithium batteries which will last longer than alkaline batteries (but cost more) or recharge- able ni-cad batteries (won’t last as long as standard alkalines).
4 ANTENNA Y our AccuMap 12 has a remov able antenna that f olds over the displa y when the unit is not in use. This pre v ents damage to the displa y . T o open the antenna, simply lift on an edge and raise it to the desired position. The antenna is a quic k release design, simplifying its removal and installation.
5 MAP CARTRIDGE INST ALLA TION The AccuMap 12 uses IMS Smar tMap™ and WorldMap™, C-Map™, and Na vionics™ car tridges, all of which are packaged in a car tridge housing specifically designed f or Eagle mapping products. The IMS Smar tMap™ car tr idges contain digitized data of ov er 120,000 bodies of water .
6 REMO VING A CARTRIDGE If you ha ve difficulty remo ving a car tridge, use the back co ver as a re- mov al tool. Simply press one side of the cover against the ridge on the car tridge and gently push towards the bottom of the unit. Don’t use a corner of the cover - it could damage it.
7 OPERA TION T urning Po wer On T o tur n the AccuMap 12 on, simply press the PWR ke y . A screen similar to the one at right appears. Press the EXIT key to erase this screen. MENUS Most of the adjustments and f eatures are f ound on “menus”. Pressing the MENU key lets you vie w the men us .
8 Once the AccuMap 12 locks on to the satellites and finds y our position, it stores the satellite data in its memory . The ne xt time you use the unit, it should take much less time to loc k on. T o use your AccuMap 12, first take it outside , aw ay from trees and b uildings.
9 Using the down arro w key , highlight the “Ini- tialize GPS Receiv er” menu, then press the right arrow ke y . The screen sho wn below ap- pears ne xt. This is the GPS initialization screen. The posi- tion, altitude, time , and date the GPS receiver is currently using to find the satellites is shown at the bottom of this screen.
10 ke y . The unit returns to the GPS SETUP menu with y our local latitude and longitude showing in the bo x at the bottom of the screen. Enter Manuall y T o change the position by manually entering the latitude and longitude, press the MENU k ey , then highlight the “GPS SETUP” label and press the right arrow ke y .
11 WINDO WS (Group A) MAPPING (Map 3) NA VIGA TION (Nav 1) IMPORT ANT! If the data shown in digital numbers on an y screen is flashing, it means that data is inv alid. DO NO T REL Y ON ANY NUMBERS THA T ARE FLASH- ING! Usually , this happens when the GPS receiver has lost its loc k on the satellites.
12 Navigation Screens There are two na vigation screens. Nav screen number one shows a g raphi- cal view of y our tr ip , the other screen shows all na vigation details in large digital numbers. Nav Screen #1 This screen is dominated by a compass rose .
13 course has nothing to do with your present position, e xcept for y our star t- ing location.) It’ s shown as a dotted line on the NA V 1 displa y . This is shown as a reminder so that if y ou de viate from your original course, y ou can easily return to it.
14 Mapping The AccuMap 12 has a ground map of the w orld built inside. This map has the majority of its detail in far southern Canada, the continental United States and Ha waiian islands, nor thern Mexico , the Bahamas, and Bermuda. The background map shows when the AccuMap 12 is first turned on, with or without a map car tridge.
15 MAP 1 MAP 2 MAP 3 T o view the other mapping screens, press the P AGES k ey . Press the up or down arro w ke y to highlight the "MAP 1" label. Now press the right or left arrow k ey to select a diff erent mapping screen. Press the EXIT k ey to erase the pages menu.
16 The latitude/longitude of the cursor shows in the bo x at the top of the screen whene v er the cursor is activated. A UTOZOOM Generally , when you tra vel using a mapping receiv er like the AccuMap 12, you spend some amount of time z ooming in and out, looking at detail or the whole route between the start and destination.
17 EARTH MAP OPTIONS The ear th map consists of the built-in bac kground map of the world, plus any cartr idge that is attached to the AccuMap 12. T o change the Ear th map options, first press the MENU k e y , then press the up or down arro w ke ys until the Ear th Map label appears.

Earth Map On/Off Y ou can turn the ear th map completely off, clearing the screen of all ground detail (includ- ing IMS Smar tMap car tridge detail).
19 Navionics Options If you are using this receiv er with a Navionics car tridge, the “Na vionics Options” label ap- pears on the main menu list. Highlight this menu item and press the right arrow ke y . The screen at right appears. These menu items let y ou tur n various naviga- tion aids off or on.

21 PLO TTER OPTIONS Plot T rail The line e xtending from y our present position is called a plot trail. This unit lets y ou custom- ize the plot trail with the f ollowing menu items. All of the items on the Plotter Options menu aff ect the plot trail.
22 Save Current Plot T rail Y ou can sa ve up to two plot trails in memory . The receiver sa ves these tr ails ev en if pow er is remov ed from the unit. T o sav e your current plot trail, highlight the “Sav e Current Plot T rail” menu using the arrow k eys.
23 MO VE CURSOR T O LOCA TION PRESS ENT , SELECT ICON, PRESS ENT PRESS EXIT T O ERASE CURSOR ICONS The AccuMap 12 has fifteen symbols or “icons” a vailab le. These icons can be placed anywhere on the mapping screens. These can be used to mark fishing spots, boat r amps, rest stops, airpor ts, or whate ver .
24 Erase Icons T o erase an icon from the screen, first press the MENU ke y , then select the “Icon Options” menu as shown at right. There are three methods used to erase icons from the screen.
25 through T . Group “A” is visible in the bac kground when you s witch to the windows groups . T o view each g roup , simply press the right or left arrow k ey while the mode menu is sho wing. Each group sho ws in the background as y ou press the arrow k eys .

Clock Hour s Nor mally , the time shows in the twelv e hour format (a.m./P .M..). T o change it to 24-hour f or mat, press the MENU key , then select the “CLK HRS” label.
28 Using the right and left arrow ke ys, mov e the b lack box to the first n umber in the time that y ou want to set. (The time is in hours, minutes , and seconds) Now press the up or do wn ar- row k eys until the desired number shows. Con- tinue until the time sho wn in the display is cor- rect, then press the ENT ke y .
29 SELECT “REPROGRAM BO XES” FR OM MAIN MENU. THE BO X SELECTION SCREEN APPEARS. PRESS THE RIGHT ARRO W KEY UNTIL THE DESIRED BO X APPEARS. THIS IS THE FIRST WINDOW THA T WE W ANT TO USE. PRESS THE UP ARRO W KEY T O SELECT IT . THE FIRST BO X IS PLACED A T THE T OP .
30 W A YPOINT DA T AB ASE The AccuMap 12 gives y ou the capability of creating y our own database of locations, called “wa ypoints”.. Y ou can sav e your present position, cur- sor position, or enter a latitude/longitude and sa ve it as a wa ypoint.
31 point number it just used. This also places you in the wa ypoint menu as shown at right. W ait a f ew seconds and the menu will clear automatically or press the EXIT ke y to erase the w a ypoint menu. Saving Y our Present Position as a Wa ypoint (Select Number Method) The methods shown abov e don’t let y ou choose the wa ypoint number .
32 Edit Lat/Lon The AccuMap 12 lets you enter an y latitude/longi- tude using the ke yboard and sav e it under any wa ypoint number , from 1 to 250. Y ou can also change any w a ypoint’ s position using this method. T o do this, first select the wa ypoint number .
33 Press the up or down arrow k eys to select the first letter in the name. Press the right arrow k ey to mov e the blac k box to the ne xt position in the name.
34 w a ypoint number 10. T o do this, go to the second w a ypoint menu page. Now highlight the “Mo ve A W aypoint” label. Press the r ight arro w ke y . The screen shown at right appears. The “Select F rom” label is highlighted. Using the down arro w key , high- light either the name or wa ypoint number labels.
35 Once you ha v e the first wa ypoint showing on the screen, then you need to choose the other w ay- point that you’ re going to measure. Highlight the “Select” label at the top of the screen, then press the right arrow ke y to select “B”. Now choose the wa ypoint that you wish measure.
36 press the left or right arrow ke ys until the desired route number appears . In this e xample, ho w e v er , we’ll use route number one. Beneath the route number is the route name men u. If you wish to name the route, highlight the “NAME” field, then press the right arrow k e y .
37 Continue selecting w aypoints until the route is com- plete. As y ou add wa ypoints to the list, the bearing and distance from each wa ypoint to the one previ- ous is shown to the right of the wa ypoint’ s name. In this e xample, the second wa ypoint in the list is 104 degrees and 30.
38 Following a Route T o follow a route , first recall it by pressing the MENU ke y , highlighting the “ROUTES” label, then high- lighting the “RUN R OUTE” label and press the right arrow k e y . The screen shown at r ight appears. The blac k box is on the “Route # 01” label.
39 Delete a Route T o erase a route from memor y , first press the WPT ke y , then go to the Route Planning menu on the second user wa ypoint page. Switch to the route number y ou wish to erase, then mov e the blac k bo x to the “Delete Route” label.
40 MO VE CURSOR T O LOCA TION PRESS MENU KEY , THEN PRESS RIGHT ARRO W KEY NA VIGA TING TO CURSOR LOCA TION Navigating to a cur sor location The AccuMap 12 lets you na vigation to a location without storing it in the w aypoint database by using the map and cursor .
41 CANCEL NA VIGA TION The AccuMap 12 continues to na vigate to a re- called wa ypoint, the last wa ypoint in a route, or the cursor position until you stop it. T o stop the navigation function, press the MENU k ey , then press the up or do wn arrow k eys until the “Cancel Navigation” label is highlighted.
42 last known tr ac k direction. When y ou resume speed, all f eatures operate normally . When y ou’ re stopped at a traffic light, the track holding f eature is useful to pre vent the anno ying random numbers from appearing on the display while you're stopped.
43 PCF (P osition Correction F actor) Another method used to make y our display match a chart or map is called “PCF” or P osition Correction F actor . This unit gives y ou the capability to mov e or offset the position shown on the displa y to match one on the char t.
44 Units of Measure The AccuMap 12 can show its data in man y differ- ent f or mats. For e xample, distance can be dis- pla yed in statute miles (MI), nautical miles (NM), or kilometers (KM). The f ollowing can be changed on the Units of Mea- sure menu: (Defaults shown in bold ) Distance .
45 Press the up or down arro w ke ys to highlight the desired position f ormat. Press the EXIT k e y to select the f or mat and erase the menu. NMEA / DGPS The AccuMap 12 transmits data through the data port in the back of the unit using NMEA 0183 f or mat, version 1.
46 Configure NMEA Output Press the down arro w key on the “NMEA/DGPS” menu until the “Configure NMEA Output” men u is highlighted, then press the right arrow k e y . A screen similar to the one at right appears. NMEA 0183 V er sion There are two v ersions of the NMEA data, 1.

49 NAME Y ou can personalize your GPS receiv er by entering your name, social security number or an y I.D . you desire . T o enter a name, first highlight the “Name Input” label on the System Setup menu. Press the right arrow k e y . The screen shown at r ight appears.
50 GPS Update Rate Changing the update rate conserves battery power and lengthens the battery life. The update rate is the length of time it takes the receiver to send data to the displa y . In other words, normally the receiver sends po- sition data once e ver y second.
51 the necessary satellites, but it usually tak es less time. Remember , when it does, y our local time and possibly date can be wrong. Use the method shown in the initialization section at the front of this manual to change them, if needed. Once this is done, an internal clock will keep the correct time, e ven when the unit is turned off.
52 MESSA GES At the bottom of the GPS Alarms menu are the position (POS) and DGPS message selections. When turned on, the position message (shown at right) appears f or a few seconds whene ver the AccuMap 12 locks onto the satellites and sho ws a position.

54 On the e xample at r ight, the speed is being changed from 100 m.p .h. to 30 m.p .h.. When the numbers are correct, press the EXIT k ey . Starting Position Normally , the star ting position for the simulator is your present position.
55 B A TTERIES When using the AccuMap 12 with batteries, the backlights automatically turn off after 30 seconds. (Remember , you can change the time interval.) Pressing the PWR ke y turns the lights on again. If the batteries become weak, the message shown at right appears on the display .
