06656 1 Intr oduction Ke yboard W edg e Mode As a keyboard wedge interface, the PSC scanner can be used with ter - minals provide d by most of the major terminal manufacturers. In most cases, the PSC scanner is easily connected between the key - board and display of the terminal.
2 User’s / Programming Guide Unpac king Y our package should include a sca nner , interface cable, User ’s Man - ual, and a pl astic scanner holder . The unit should be inspected immediately upon r eceipt to determine if any damage has occurred du ring shipment.
06656 3 Connecting the P ower Supply If supplied, plug the connector from the external power supply into the receptacle located on the housing connector .
4 User’s / Programming Guide Serial Communications The PSC scanner pr ovides the user with two d iffer ent serial commu - nications options: Serial TTL and Serial RS232 communications. Serial TTL Mode Serial TTL is a serial communications interface that uses TTL/CMOS voltage levels ranging from 0 to 5 volts.
06656 5 Au to S en se ® Operation AutoSense ® is a factory installed feature r equested at time of order . It provides for hands-fr ee or handheld operation. AutoSense ® is acti - vated by scanning th e Enable AutoSense ® symbol. The scanner will respond by emitti ng a continuous, low level red beam of light known as the trigger beam.
6 User’s / Programming Guide NO Enable A utoSense ® NN Disable A utoSense ® T o use this mode of operation properly , the user must first attach the plastic scann er holder to the br acket of the stand as shown in Figure 1 . The (NO) Enable AutoSense ® pr ogramming symbol is scanned until the green “Good Decode” light blinks.
06656 7 W and Emulation Operation T o operate the PSC scanner in W and Emulation the user must first turn off the powerto the host device and then detach the scanner fr om the host device by removing the cable from the scanner .
8 User’s / Programming Guide Setup Overview General setup parameters are divided into Keyboar d W edge options (communication to host thr ough the terminal keyboard), W and Emu - lation options (communi cation between the scanner and the host sys - tem’s decoder), and Serial Commun icatio n options (communications direct to the host system).
06656 9 Data Synchronization • Disable Data Synchronization • Enable Data Synchronization • Active Pola rity High •A c t i v e P o l a r i t y L o w Serial Communication and W edge Options The.
10 User’s / Programming Guide Symbologies The bar codes that can be r ead by PSC’s bar code scanners include: Code 39 Code 93 Interleaved 2 of 5 Code 128 Standard 2 of 5 Codabar UPC-A, UPC-E Code 11 EAN/JAN MSI/Plessey A complete list of the related opti ons and the instructions f or setting them are pr ovided in the section on Symbologies.
06656 11 P arameters Selection Guidelines Three basic steps must be followed when selecting parameters for your scanner . 1. Review this manual to be sure you understand the terminology . 2. Review the requir ements of your host system, with a techni - cal expert from your company , if necessary .
12 User’s / Programming Guide 1. Scan the bar code beside Interc haracter Delay = XX and lis - ten for one short-high beep. 2. After the beep, scan the bar code beside 0 on the Digit Selec - tion page and listen for one short-high beep.
06656 13 Serial Communication Reset Default T o program the communication mode for serial asynchronous com - munication, scan t he following label: CA Select Serial Output Baud Rate There ar e seven standard serial communication baud rates to select from.
14 User’s / Programming Guide Data T ransmission Serial transmission data is compos ed of three of four differ ent ele - ments, dep ending upon host syst em r equirement s. These elements are the ST ART bit, DA T A bits (7 or 8 bits), OP TIONAL P ARITY bits, and STOP bit (s) (1 or 2 bits).
06656 15 If your system r equir es a WORD length of 8 bits, 1 or 2 ST OP bits, and P A RITY check, s elect the appropriate option fr om the table below: 72 Mark EF 72 Space EE T able 2. 8 Bit Options Data Stop Bits Pa ri ty Option 81 Odd EL 81 Even EK 81 Mark EJ 81 Space EI T able 1.
16 User’s / Programming Guide If yo ur sy st em req ui res a W OR D l en g th of 8 bits and 1 or 2 STOP bits, but no P ARITY , select the option below: P ARITY check is not possible with this combination of STOP bits and WORD length. Some receiving equipment r equires inverted serial communication signals.
06656 17 CTS Like XON/XOFF pr otocol, CTS pro tocol is a mechanism used to con - trol data flow out. The CTS input is used to inform the scanner that the host terminal is ready to accept scanned data. When CT S (+) pr o - tocol is selected, the scanner waits for a low level on its CTS input befor e transmitting data.
18 User’s / Programming Guide Another flow contr ol option is available. If enabled, the stop/go pr o - tocol disables the trigger after ev ery successful sca n. The trigger is then re-enabled with a serial ‘BG’ command in format <STX><ESC>BG<ETX>.
06656 19 Label Buffering The user may select one of three levels of s erial buffering. W ith Full Buffering (the def ault) selected, the scanner will place all scanned labels into a buffer for transmission. This allows the operator to con - tinue scanning even though the pr evious label may not have been transmitted yet.
20 User’s / Programming Guide Menu Commands P arameter Messages In serial mode, most menu commands when scanned will pr ovide a confirmation message to the host along with the ACK.
06656 21 HF External T rigger(-) General P arameters Intercharacter Dela y Certain terminals and computers requir e an int er chara cter delay to simulate the ef fects of keystr oke delays. Choosin g an intercharacter delay causes the characters to be sent at the slower speed r equir ed by the device to which you are interfacing.
22 User’s / Programming Guide T ransmission Mode Full Duplex or Half Duplex T ransmission mode selects either fu ll or half duplex operation regar d - less of interface. In the half duplex mode, the decod ed message is sent simultaneously to the display and to the host computer .
06656 23 ZB Display Configuration When Option ZC is scanned, the program version followed by car - riage return-line feed characters (CR-LF) is sent in the format <software name>SP<###> (W DHB 3.86, for example). ZC T ransmit V ersion Number P ower Consumption Y ou may choose one of two Power Consumption modes.
24 User’s / Programming Guide BE Enable 4 Times Laser Redundancy Laser Timeout The scan beam will activate in response to a trigger pull. The beam will automatically deactivate after a label is decoded. If a label is not decoded., the scan beam will timeout and deactivate after several sec - onds.
06656 25 AC Beeper On; V olume Medium AD Beeper On; V olume Loud *#@ Message Formatting Message formatting descri bes how to format the data (de coded string) that is sent fr om the scanner to the host.
26 User’s / Programming Guide Prefix A prefix is a subset of the prea mble normally formatted to some industry standard, i.e., it is r epresented by a specific ASCII code. An example of a prefix is the STX (Start of T ransmission) code. IA Prefix = None*# IB Prefix = STX IC Prefix = SOH Suffix A suffix is a subset of the Pos tamble.
06656 27 MF Suffix = CR and LF * Users also have the ability to sele ct any AS CII character for use as a suffix. Scan the MJ label, then scan tw o labels from the Hexadecimal Con - version T able repr esenting the character needed for the suf fix. Certain specialized applications requ ire a two character suf fix of ETB NUL.
28 User’s / Programming Guide Code Identifier A code identifier may optionally be transmi tted with the mes sage. This option is provided so a host computer can identify the type of bar code scanned, as well as the encoded inf ormation. Scan Option F A to disa ble the code identifier .
06656 29 Preamble or P ostamble Selection Prea mbles and Postambles ar e composed of up to four AS CII charac - ters. Each ASCII character is enco d ed as two hexadecimal numbers. Use the Hexadecimal Conversion T able in Appendix A to look up the hexadecimal equivalent.
30 User’s / Programming Guide LA P ostamble = None*# LB Enter P ostamble IMPORT ANT Scan Enter P ostamble to enter a P ost amble , then refer to the Hexadecimal Ta b l e i n Append ix A .
06656 31 Serial Commands General Serial Command Format Serial Commands ar e only accepted by the PSC scanner when in serial communications mode. Serial commands take the form: STX ESC L T1 L T2 <optional param - eters>ETX (Note: STX = ^B; ETX = ^C) STX, ESC, and ETX a re ASCII codes whose values ar e 02H, 1BH, and 03H, respectively .
32 User’s / Programming Guide Beeper Off CR-LF Ack If the scanner re ceives an unknown or improperly formatte d code, or if the required parameters are missing or out-of-range, it s ends a NAK (15H) Code.
06656 33 P ower Standby and Serial Commands When the scanner is programmed fo r stand by power operation (@B), the first character of the command is used to “wake-up” the scanner; it is not pr operly received by the scanner ’s CPU.
