Page 1 About the printer This guide applies to SP Serie s printers with the Built-in Ethernet feature, and incl ude s the SP55 card printer with Built in Ethernet, the SP55 card printer with Bu ilt-I n Ethernet and Open Card, and the SP60 card printer .
Page 2 Ports are located on the left side of the printer . Network Port: Use the Ethernet™ port to connect a printer with the Built- in Ethern et feature. USB Data Port: Connect the data cable to the printer . ALL printers have this port. Manual Advance Knob: Use to move a card in the printer or to turn rollers.
Page 3 The inside of the printer Cover Arm: Holds the cover and printhead cartridge in place. Printhead Cartridge: Applies th e image to the card. The label includes”YMC” for color or “K” for monochrome printheads. Print Ribbon Cartridge (shown with color print ribbon).
Page 4 • Printers with “U” printing can print one color (monochrome) only . “C” printing is full-color or monochrome (with specific ribbons).
Page 5 Loading cards 1 Open the input hopper cover. 2 Remove cards from the ori ginal package. Tip s : Handling cards • Do not touch the surface of cards before printing them. (Oils on hands will reduce printing quality .) • Handle cards by the edges or wear gloves.
Page 6 3 Place the cards in the input hopper . The diagram shows the typica l locations for the magnetic stripe and smart card chip. 4 Push the input hopper cover close d until it latches. See SP Series Info Central for current information about cards to use in the printer .
Page 7 Loading print ribbon 1 Open the prin te r . 2 Remove the ribbon cartridge. 3 Remove both used ribbon spools from the cartridge (if present). Tip s: Ha ndling print ribbon • Keep unused ribbon in the original package. • Don’t place ribbon on a dusty or dirty surface–dirt could damage the pri nthead.
Page 8 5 Load the new roll of print ribbon on the cartridge. — Put the full spool of ribbon on the supply spindle of the ribbon cartridge. Push until the spool clicks onto the spindle. — Put the empty take-up spool on the sp indle with the solid black gear .
Page 9 Power on the printer Plug in the printer to power it on. The printer does no t have a power switch. 1 Make sure the power supply cord connects to the printer power receptacle (1). 2 Connect the power cord to the power supply (2). 3 Connect the power cord to the power outlet (3).
Page 10 The LCD p anel The SP Series Card Printer with built-in Ethernet incl udes an LCD panel. The LCD panel has a 2-line display , four keys, and the S tatus light. This section describe s what you need to know when printing cards. See “Printer LC D settings” on page 45 for detailed information about viewing and changing network setti ngs.
Page 1 1 • Printer messages: The display sho ws the message number and a short description of the p roblem. — Fi x the problem and then p ress the Ready key to clea r the message. Repeat if anoth er message is displayed. — See “Printer messages” on page 65 for details about messages.

Page 13 Making a printer test card 1 Power of f the prin ter . 2 Confirm that cards and print ribbon are loaded in the printe r . — If the printer has a magne ti c stripe module , the card must have a magnetic stripe. — If it is a three-track module, be sure to use blank cards with the correct coerci vity (the default is high coercivity).
Page 14 Tip s f or suc cess • Allow 30 to 60 seconds for the printer to begin prin ting the test card. • The status light will flash green while the printer is processing the data. • If the status light is st eady amber and the printer beeps, the printer is paused.
Page 15 Dat a format s for the SP Series Card Printer All SP Series printers with the Built-i n Ethernet feature are shipped with t he SmartD river CD-ROM, and can print cards sent by the SmartDriver (when the Data Format is set to SmartDriver). The printer can also be purchased with the Open Card option.
Page 16 SmartDriver data The printer can be used with the SmartDriver installed on a PC. The SmartDriver receives data from your Windows app lication and forma ts it for the printer . The printe r can print one or both sides of the card (dup lex printing), print in land scape or portrait orientation, and print in full color or one color .
Page 17 Open Card data format T h e Op e n C a rd da t a format uses ASCII d a t a . Any h o st comp u t e r that c a n g en e r a te a n ASCII (text) d a t a stream a nd send it to the printer usi n g TCP/IP (or TCP/IP w i th LP D / L P R ) can se n d c a rd da t a using the Open C a rd d a t a format.
Page 18 The Open Card format supports printing with one color on o ne side of the card in landscape mode. If you use a full- color ribbon in a full-color prin ter when you send Open Ca rd data, the printer will use only the K panel in the ribbon and ignore the col or and topcoat panels.

Page 23 Useful tools When you set up an SP Series Card Printer with Built-in Ethernet feature, you might use several tools. The se tools are part of the netw ork operating system and a co mputer operating system; they are not provided with the printer .
Page 24 • tiff2opencard The SP Series Open Card CD-ROM includes the tiff 2opencard utility , which you use to prep are logos (graphics) before sending then to the printer . • file2prn The SP Series Open Card CD-ROM includes the file2p rn utility , which you use to send files, including logo files or sample card f iles, to the printer .
Page 25 Network inst allation A networked printer is connected to a network with out a host computer between the printer and network. Depending on printer options and your needs, the printer can be connected to a print server an d th en to the network.
Page 26 — When using the printer from an operating system wit h permis sions, suc h as Windows XP , users must have the same permissions as for a locally attached printer . Y ou can connect an SP Series C ard Printer using a prin t server if you choose.
Page 27 Connect the printe r to the network T o connect the printer to the network, use one of the following methods: • Connect the printer using the Ethernet port (requires an SP Series Card Printe.
Page 28 Use the USB port and a wired print server 1 Connect the print server to the printer using a USB cable. 2 Connect the print server to the network using an Ethernet cable.
Page 29 Use the USB port and a wi reless print server 1 Install the wireless networ k ad apter , including the driver files, to a nearby computer . Follow the instructions provided with the adapter to install it.
Page 30 Set up the network printer Set the SP Series Card Printer for the type of network addr essing you plan to use. Do not perform th ese steps if you use a print server to connect the printer to the ne two rk. First, view the cu rrent mode of ad dressing: 1 Press the Enter key to enter the menu system.
Page 31 — Press the Enter key to leave the current value. — Press the Up or Down Arro w key to scroll to a value and press Enter to view the value. — Exit to the Main Menu and continu e with “Set the Data Format” on page 34 . — If you need to change the address mode, continue with these steps.
Page 32 — If you choose S tatic IP , the second line of the LCD panel shows “IP Address.” — Work with you r network personnel to obtain the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address. — Press the Enter key to choose “IP Addr ess.” The printer shows the current IP address and a cursor appears under the first byte of the address.
Page 33 — Press the Enter key . The current value appears with the cursor under the first byte. Use the same process as for the IP address to set the subnet mask. When you press the Enter key after the fourth byte, “Gateway Addr” appears. — Press the Enter key .
Page 34 Set the Data Format Before you send any data to the printer , set the data forma t so th e printer can recei ve the data you send. 1 Press the Enter key to enter the menu system. 2 Press the Up or Down Arrow key to scroll to “Configuration” and press the Enter key .
Page 35 Set up for your card design The steps to set up for your card design depend on the Data Format you use. Set up for SmartDriver 1 Install the SmartDriver . Choose “Direct Network” when installing the printer. 2 Install SP Series Info Central and e-Guide.
Page 36 SNMP support The SP Series Ca rd Printer with Bui lt-in Ethernet su pports the following SNMP (simple network management protocol) features: • The printer has an SNMP agent which supports the prin ter MIB (management info rmation block) and MIB-II.
Page 37 Print a card First, make sure the printer is installed and ready (see “Printer Installation” on page 21). Then, see “Data formats for the SP Series Card Printer” on page 15 for features of each format. From the SmartDriver The SP Series printer can receive card data from the SmartDriver running on a Windows PC.
Page 38 Using the Open Card dat a format A printer with the Open Card option can receive card da ta from any host computer th at sends an ASCII (text) data stream using TCP/IP . Usua lly , you use an app lication on a ho st compu ter to collect and p repare the data and then send it.
Page 39 Cleaning the printer Run a cleaning card and change the clea ning sleeve when changing the print ribbon. Make sure that all cards sent to the printer have completed prin ti ng before cleaning. 1 Open the printer cover (1). 2 Remove the replaceable cleaning roller and the ribbon cartridge (2).
Page 40 9 Make sure “> Cleaning Card” is displayed on the second line of the LCD panel and press the Enter key . The printer moves the card through the printer several times and ejects the card. W ait a few minutes to allow the rollers to dry for best printer operation and print quality .
Page 41 Cleaning the printer rollers The printer rollers move the card during printing opera tions. Clean the rollers, using the cleaning pen suppli ed with th e printer , when problems occur such as:.
Page 42 3 Clean the transport area rollers (at locations 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) followin g the same procedure used for the pick rollers. — W ait a few minutes to allow the rollers to dry for b est printer operation and print quality . 4 Replace the print ribbon cartridge and cl eaning roller .
P a ge 43 Getting the most out of your printer T o get the best quality cards and to maintain printer performance, follow these tips for success: • Use the best quality cards available with a smooth , glossy PVC surface and pri n t t h em o nly onc e .

Page 46 LCD menu system The menu system has three major branches. Use the S tatus menu to view settings a nd data about the pr inter . Use the Configuration menu to change settings.

Page 55 Set the Data Format Tip s for suc cess • When you choose a data format, the printer might not op erate properly if data in another format is sent. • If you have the SmartDriver installed and connected to the printer , suspend communication using the Printer T oolbox before changing values.
Page 56 Set the Address Mode Tip s for suc cess • When you choose an address mode , you determine how t he ne twork address of the printer is assigned. The possible values are DHCP and S tatic IP . DHCP stands fo r “Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol” and mea ns that the network assign s the IP address (and other values ) to the printer .
Page 57 — If you have chosen DHCP , “Apply/Restart” appears on line 2. Press the Enter key to restart the printer . After the printer rest arts, see “View the Network Address Mode, IP Addresses, and MAC Address” on pag e 51 to retrieve the IP address and othe r da t a.
Page 58 Set the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway Address Tip s for Succ ess • The printer address mode must be “S tatic IP” to se t these values.
Page 59 4 Press the Up or Down Arrow key to chan ge the IP address. (Press and hold the Up or Down Arrow key to change the value quickly .) 5 When the first byte is correct, press the Enter key to move to the second byte. 6 Repeat for the third and fourth byte of the IP address.
Page 60 Set the K Power Tip s for Succ ess • Set the K Power value to change the darkness—or in tensity—of pri nting with m onochrome ribbo n (or the monochrome–K–panel of full-color ribbon ). K power affe cts the thickness of letters and barcodes; hi gher intensity prints thicker letters or barcodes.
P a ge 61 T roubleshooting What is the problem? T ry this: 1 A message appeared o n the PC or LCD panel. • Click the Help button on the message box or find the message in this guide to see possible causes and the solution for each cause. See the “Related T opics” to fix the problem.
P a ge 6 2 5 The printer does not resp ond when I print a card or when I click “Resume” on the Printer T oolbox. • Make sure the printer is plugged in. See “Power on the printer” on page 9 . • Make sure the printer is connected to the computer .
P a ge 63 Printer supplies Datacard-certified ribbon kits and cleaning supplies are a vailable for the printer . Ribbon kits cont ain a roll of print ribbon, a cleaning card, and a replaceable cleaning slee ve. Datacard recommends that you run a cleaning card and replace the cleaning sleeve each time you change the print ribb on.
P a ge 64 Monochrome print ribbo n Several colors of mono chrome (single-color) prin t ribb on are availabl e for the SP Seri es printer. A roll of ribbon prints 1500 or more images. The Ribbon Saver feature is enabled by Datacard-c ertifi ed monoch rome ribbons.
Page 65 Printer messages The SP Series Card Printer with the Built-in Ethe rnet feature displays messa g es on th e LC D p anel. If the Data Format is set to SmartDriver , messa ges (that match up with printer messages) also appear on the PC in message boxes.
Page 66 DM-00760 Duplex Error The duplex mechanism did not reach the correct position. Possible C ause 1: A card or object is jamme d in or near th e duplex module. Solution 1: Op en the dupl ex module cove r at the back of the printer (1). Release any cards or objects stuck in the module (2).
Page 67 DM-00762 Duplex Jam The card is stuck in the duplex or p ass-through module. Possible Cause 1: A card is jammed in or near th e dupl ex module. Solution 1: Op en the dupl ex module cove r at the back of the printer (1). Release any cards stuck in the module (2).
Page 68 DM-00765 No Duplex The duplex module is not inst alled or det ected. Possible Ca use 1: The driver was set to u se automatic duplex and a du plex module is not installed in the p rinter . Solution 1: Send a one-sided card to the printer or set the driver for manual duplex.
Page 69 DM-00767 Duplex Jam The card is lost in the duplex or p ass- through module. Possible Cause 1: A card is jammed in or near th e dupl ex module. Solution 1: Op en th e du p l ex mo du l e cove r at the ba ck of the pri nt er . Release any cards stuck in the module.
Page 70 IS-01206 No Card Picked A card was not picked successfully . Possible Cause 1: The input hopper is empty . Solution 1: Fan the edges of the cards so the printer picks one card at a time and then load cards in the input hopper . Push the input hopper cover closed until it latches.
Page 71 SY -01305 Data Error The setting sent to t he printer does not match printer fe atures. Possible Cause 1: A setting was sent to the printer for a module that is not installed or enabled. Solution 1: Check the printer to see wh ether options are installed.
Page 72 SY -01306 Data Error The setting value yo u selected is not valid. Possible Cause 1: The value sent to the printer does not apply to the printer attached. Solution 1: Use approved programs, such as the printer ’s Properties or Printing Preferences dialog box, to send values to the printer .
Page 73 SY -01310 Flash Error EEPROM flash dat a error . Possible Cause 1: A transmission problem occurre d. Solution 1: Send the file or data again. Y ou can repeat this action several times. Possible Cause 2: Data being sent to the printer is corrupted or incorrect.
Page 74 SY -01312 Flash error EEPROM flash size error . Possible cause: A logo was downlo aded to the printer (using the file2prn utility) and the logo requires more memory than is available in th e printer . Solution: Press the Ready key on the LCD panel to clear the logo from the printer and make the prin ter ready .
Page 75 SY -01314 Flash Error W arning! EEPROM flash write error . Possible Cause 1: A transmission problem occurre d. Solution 1: Send the file or data again. Y ou can repeat this action several times. Possible Cause 2: The printer EEPROM does not accept the data or setting.
Page 76 SY -01317 Memory Error Memory error . Possible Cause 1: The printer memory does not a ccept the data. Solution 1: Power off the printer . Wait o ne minute, and then power on the printer .
Page 77 SY -01325 Data Error The options or supplie s insta lled do not match settings or card dat a. Possible Cause 1: The printer has an uni dentifie d ribbon installed and a full-color card was sent to the printer . Solution 1: The printer can only print one color if it cannot identify the ribbon.
Page 78 If you cannot fix the problem, contact your service provider for assistance. Tip s for suc cess • Y ou migh t have moved the print ribbo n while the printer power was off. Print another card to verify that th e printer works correctly . The printer is designed to allow you to fix problems while the printer power is on.
Page 79 SY -01327 Data Error The request sent to the printer is not supported. Possible Cause 1: The printer type has changed to SP55 or SP60. The SmartDriver Printer T oolbox, Properties , or Printi .
Page 80 Possible Cause 3: When sending Open Card da ta, a command error occurred. Solution 3: Press the Ready key on the LCD panel to clear the job and make the printer ready . See th e SP Series Dat a Formatting Guide for detailed information about the Open Card format.
Page 81 SY -01331 Comm Error Dat a transm ission error . Possible Cause 1: The system has a temporar y communication problem. Solution 1: Print the card data again. Possible Cause 2: The host computer an d printer have a communi cation problem. Solution 2: T roubleshoot a communication problem.
Page 82 SY -01332 Hardware Error General printer fault. Possible Cause 1: The printhead cable is not attached to the printhea d cartridge. Solution 1: Power of f the printer . Make sure the printhead cable is fully seated in the printhead cartridge. Close th e printer and power it on.
Page 83 MS-01401 , MS-01402 , MS-01403 Mag S tripe Dat a Dat a sent doe s not match require ment s for trac k 1, 2, or 3. Possible Cause 1: Data sent includes more ch ar acters than all owed by the magnetic stripe format selected for the track. Solution 1: Cancel the current print job.
Page 84 MS-01404, MS-01405, MS- 01406 Mag Stripe Error Parity error reading dat a on track 1, 2 or 3. What is Parity? • Parity is special data used when encoding a magnetic stripe. It is not the data you enter . Possible Cause 1: The card has dirt or damage on the magn etic stripe.
Page 85 MS-01407, MS-01408, or MS-01409 Mag Stripe Error LRC error reading dat a on track 1, 2, or 3. What is LRC? • LRC is special data used when encoding a magnetic stripe. It is not the data you enter . Possible Cause 1: The card has dirt or damage on the magn etic stripe.
Page 86 MS-01410, MS-0141 1, or MS-01412 Mag Stripe Error St art Sent inel error reading dat a on track 1, 2, or 3. What is a St art Sentinel? • A S tart Sentinel is special data used when encoding a magnetic stripe. It is not the data you enter . Possible Cause 1: The card has dirt or dama ge on the magn etic stripe.
Page 87 MS-01413, MS-01414, or MS-01415 Mag Stripe Error End Sentinel error reading dat a on track 1, 2, or 3. What is an End Sentinel? • An End Sentinel is special data used when encoding a magn etic stripe. It is not the data you enter . Possible Cause 1: The card has dirt or dama ge on the magn etic stripe.
Page 88 MS-01417, MS-01418, MS-01419, MS-01420, MS-01421 Card Jam Possible Cause 1: The card is stuck in or near the magne tic stripe module. Solution 1a: Remove the stuck card. Send the card to print again. Solution 1b: Make sure cards are free of dirt or oil.
Page 89 MS-01424 Mag Stripe Error Unable to read any dat a from th e card. Possible Cause 1: The cards do not have a magnetic stripe. Solution 1: Load magnetic stripe cards in the input hopper . Possible Cause 2: The magnetic stripe cards are not oriented correctly .
Page 90 MS-01425 Mag Stripe Error Unexpected magnetic stripe c oercivity value. Possible Cause: The magnetic stripe mo dule received an u nexpected value that it cannot use. Solution: Power the printer off and on to restore the default values. (Disconnect the power cord from the printer power supply and then connect it again.
Page 91 MS-01426 EEPROM Error Magnetic stripe module settings EEPROM read or write error . Possible Cause: The magnetic stripe module had a temporary failure . Solution: Power the printer of f and on. (Disconnect the power cord from the printer power supply an d then connect it again.
Page 92 MS-01427, 1428 Mag Stripe Error Configuration information or st atus request pa ssed through by the printer driv er was not accepted by the magnetic stripe module. Possible Cause: An application sent configurat ion information or a status request to the magnetic stripe module tha t cou ld not be used .
Page 93 MS-01429 Mag Stripe Dat a Dat a s ent to a trac k does not match the requireme nt s fo r that t rack. Possible C ause 1 : Data sent uses a different encoding format than the one set for the track. Solution 1: Determine the magnetic stripe formats for the tracks y ou use.
Page 94 MS-01430 Mag Stripe Error Control information p asse d through by the printer dr iv er was not accepted by the magnet ic stripe module. Possible Cause: An application sent control information to the magnetic stripe module that could not be used .
Page 95 MS-01431, MS-01432, MS- 01433, MS-0143 4 EEPROM Error Magnetic stripe module settings EEPROM error . Possible Cause: The magnetic stripe module had a temporary failure . Solution: Power the printer of f and on. (Disconnect the power cord from the printer power supply an d then connect it again.
Page 96 MS-01435 No Mag Stripe The magnetic stripe module is not inst alled or detected. Possible Cause 1: Magnetic stripe data was sent to the printer and a magnetic stripe module is not installed. Solution 1: Remove the magnetic stripe components of the card design.
