6 SECTION 2: SLOPE GAUGE Use this pag e as a guide to de termine slop es where y ou may not oper ate safel y. Do not operat e your lawn mower on such sl opes. KEEP HANDS AND FEET AWAY FROM ROTATI NG PARTS. REMOVE OBJECTS T HAT CAN BE THROW N BY THE BLADE IN ANY DIRECTION.
7 SECTION 3: KNOW YOUR Z-SERIES NOTE: Reference to right or left hand side of the mower is observed from the oper ating posi tion. Figure 1 Read this ope rator ’ s man ual and safe ty rules befor e operatin g your Z-S eries.
8 Electric PTO (Power Take-Off) Switch The PTO s witch is lo cated on the ri ght contr ol panel and it is use d to control the en gageme nt of the cutting blades. W hen the switc h is up, the cut ting blades are engaged. Wh en the swi tch is down, the cutting bl ades are dise ngaged.
9 • Battery: Th e BATTERY indicator ligh t will illumin ate any time th e ignition k ey is in the ON position and the engine is not running. If i t ill umina tes w hile the en gine is runn ing, then the batt ery is in ne ed of a char ge. Refer t o the MAINTENANCE section of this manual for th e proper batter y chargin g procedure .
10 SECTION 4: OPERATING YOUR Z-SERIES Gas and Oil Fill-Up Servi ce the engine with gasoli ne and oil as inst ructed in the separ ate engine man ual packe d with your m ower. Read ins truc tions ca refull y. IMPORT ANT: Your u nit is s hipped with oil; however , you MUST che ck the oil lev el before ope rating.
11 • If safe for op eration, walk the slope and look for hazards su ch as roc ks, mounds, r uts, stumps , or other i rregulariti es. • After remo ving de bris and ident ifying ir regulari ties of the slope, back the Z-Ser ies up the steepes t slope you intend to work.
12 Fig ure 1 0 SECTION 5: MAKING ADJUSTMENTS Adjusting the Mower Deck Height • To push or pull the li ft leve r, depress an d hold the button. Refer to Figure 5. • Move the ha ndle up/down to the desired loc ation. • Rele ase button at t he de sired posit ion.
13 Checking the Brake Adjustment • Position th e Z-Series on a level surface an d move the throttl e lever to the slo west posit ion (turtle). • Stop the eng ine, remov e the key from the ignition, and enga ge the parking brake. • Relea se both hydrau lic rel ief levers.
14 • Remove bo lts that sec ure linkage to upper cont rol handles an d lower con trol arms. T he shock absorbe rs should r emain conn ected to linkag e. See Figu re 12. 16 Checking Hydraulic Oil Check the oi l leve l of hydrauli c units onl y when the engine is OF F. During in itial bre ak-in (f irst fiv e hours of ope ration), check oi l before eac h use and afte r every hour of operatio n. During norma l operati on, check oil after 50 hours of operatio n.
17 • Slide the boot cover all the way up (towa rd the drive handles) to acces s the drive hand le bolt s. • Remove dr ive handle bo lts, driv e handles, and rubber boot. • Remove the four bolts secur ing the retaini ng plate to the contr ol tower cov er.
18 • Caref ully pull t he be lt up and o ver th e ri ght hydrostati c coolin g fan and then li ft up and over th e left hydr ostatic cool ing fan. • Pull the dr ive bel t out of the un it. Installing Drive Belt • Set the par king bra ke and inse rt drive belt up and over the le ft and right hydo static cooling fans.

20 Fig ure 2 5 Installing Mower Deck Belt • Remove the mower deck and the old mowe r deck drive be lt from the mowe r deck. • Install and route the ne w belt according to the routing diagr am. See F igure 26 or Fi gure 27. • Install the mo wer deck.
21 Mower Blades WARNING: The mower blade s are shar p and can caus e severe injur y. Always protect hands by wearing hea vy leather work gloves to grasp blades. Fig ure 2 9 • Secur e the mo wer bl ade by p utting a piec e of wood between the blade and the housing.
