2-1 2 Hardware Installation This chapter explains how to connect the controller in your RAID enclosure to your netw ork a nd host c ompu ter . Connecting the Controll er Y o ur controller is already installed in an enclosure.

Normally , you want to let the verification finish, thou gh stop ping it does not cause an y damage to your data. Y o u may want to stop th e verificatio n if you w ant improve performan ce of the cont roller f or another application.

Caution: Deleting an array deletes the data contained in the array; however , before reusi ng the drives, you should do a low-l evel for mat on each drive.

6-1 6 Managing Spares Chaparral RAID controllers automatically reconstruct redundant (fau lt-tolerant) arrays (R AID 3, RAID 4, RAID 5, RAID 50, and mirrored) if an array becomes critical and a properly s ized spare drive is available. An array b ecomes critical when one or mor e member drives fails.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 6-2 While using a dedicated s pare is the mo s t secure way to provide spar es for your arrays, it is also expensive to keep an idle drive assigned to each array . An alternative method is to assign o ne or mo re idle drives to the s pare pool.

Configuring the Controller 7-1 1 W o rking w ith LU N Zonin g The controller’ s LUN zoning capability lets you specify which s ervers (h osts) can access each array . This giv es you complete control of ar ray access based on you r specific needs. LUN zon ing is only available on the G7313 and K7 313 models.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 7-12 Vi ewing Known WWNs Y o u can view a list of all server (hos t) WWNs that the controller is aware o f on your SAN. The controller will be aware o f any server that was booted si nce the controller was last restarted.

G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 7-14 Creating Names (Aliase s) for Server WWN s Y o u can give the servers on y our SAN names (aliases) th at you can eas ily recognize to make LUN zoning easier to manag e. F or example, yo u can use the computer name that has already been assigned to each server .
Configuring the Controller 7-15 Note: If you have not manual ly assigned a WWN an al ias, the controller will attempt to give the WWN a default name. The default name, if available, is the name of the manufacturer of the s erver ’ s host bus adapter (HBA), enclosed in an gle brackets.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 7-16 3 Select LUN Zonin g and press En ter . The LUN Exclu de List or LUN Inc l ude List s creen displays. The defaul t setting for each array LUN is Include All Hosts. This results in all servers (hosts) being able to access all ar rays.
Configuring the Controller 7-17 Include All H osts —Permits all servers (hosts) on the network to access the selected array . This is the default zone type. This results in all servers (hosts) being able to acces s all arrays. If yo u have already created an include o r exclude list, you can use this option to override the list .
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 7-18 Changing t he Alarm Mute Sett ing Y o u can enable or disable the audible alarm that sounds when the controller becomes too hot, detects low or high voltage, or an array becomes critical or of fline. Changing the mute setting lets you turn off the alarm when it is sounding.

The Confi guration Menu screen displays. 2 Select Alarm Mute and press Enter . The Alarm Mute scre en displays. The current setting is marked with an * next to it.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 7-20 Locking th e Cache Setting Y o u can prevent host systems from using SCSI mod e select commands to change th e controller ’ s write-back cache setting. Some operating systems disable write cache. If cache lock is enabled, the h o st cannot modify the cache setting.
