E-1 Important Safety Precautions Note of the following safety precautions before using the label printer for the first time. Keep these safety precautions and operating instructions on hand for future reference.

E-6 • Use only an adaptor , and make sure the adaptor has the same voltage rating as the household current in your area. Using a wrong adaptor can damage your label printer . • Be sure to turn the label printer off before you connect the adaptor .
E-7 Important! Never try to push the tape back into the cas- sette. Once tape is out of the cassette, there is no way to wind it back in. T rying to do so can cause operational prob- lems with the label printer . T o load a tape cartridge 1. Make sure the label printer is turned off.
E-8 Use u and i to move the highlighting to the item you want to select and then press SET . Press ESC to clear the SET UP menu without selecting anything. The following sections explain how to use most of the SET UP menu items. See page E-12 for details on using DEF AUL T FONT , page E-1 1 for how to use INPUT , and page E-19 for DENSITY .
E-9 Shift indicator This indicator appears when you press the SHIFT key . While this indicator is on the display , the keyboard is shifted, so the letter keys input the opposite of their current upper-case/lower- case setting. The number keys input the punctuation symbols marked in the upper right corners of the keys.

E-12 Part 5 Character Attributes and T ext Effects The operations in this part of the manual explain how to change fonts and character styles. These characteristics are called “character attributes”. It also tells you how to assign such text effects as underlining, shading, and box printing to text.

E-14 T o change the text effect for specific characters 1. After performing the two steps under “ T o assign text ef- fects ” , use u and i to highlight “ CHARACTER ” and then press SET . 2. Move the cursor to the start character from which you want to change the text effect and then press SET to register your selection.
E-15 About the format menu The format that appears in the following procedure uses symbols to indicate character sizes in each line of text. The formats that appear depend on the width of the tape loaded in the label printer and the number of lines in the block of text where the cursor is located when you press the SIZE key .
E-16 T o cancel superscripting and subscripting 1. While there is superscripted or subscripted text on the display , press SIZE . 2. Use u and i to highlight “ SUPER/SUB ” and then press SET . 3. Use u and i to highlight “ CANCEL ” and then press SET .

If bar codes cannot be read properly , try adjusting the print density (page E-19) or us- ing a larger character size. E-27 • The optional F A-900 makes it possible for you to use the label printer to print data created on your personal com- puter . Importing Data from an SF Unit Use the following procedure to send data to the label printer from a SF Unit. T o connect the SF Unit to the label printer 1.
E-28 • If you do not want to receive and append any more data items, skip steps 4 and 5. 5. Repeat step 3 to receive more data. • The “ ! ” indicator means that data items will be printed one at a time. If you want to print all of the received data items at once, press B to change “ ! ” to “ A ” .
E-29 • Use a tape width of at least 18mm when received data item character size is increased vertically by a factor of two. • None of the following functions can be used with received data: frames.

For EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, and ITF , the check digit is appended at the end of the printed digits. For CODE39 and CODABAR, the check digit is appended one digit before the final digit (when a check digit is used).

E-33 Message Cause and Recommended Action T ext being printed with a frame does not fit within a fixed-length tape. Shorten the text or change the tape length. Print operation attempted when memory is not initialized. Perform the reset operation and try again.
