2 23 Preparations Pr eparing the Power Supply Y ou can power the camcor der using a battery pack or dir ectly using the compact power adapter . If you connect the compact power adapter to the camcor der while a battery pack is attached, the c amcorder will dr aw power fro m the power outlet.

29 Using the Menus Using the Menus In mode, many of the camc order’ s functions can be adjusted from the menu for general settings, wh ich opens after pr essing the MENU button. Y ou can also re gister frequently used menu settings in a customized submenu (My Menu) for easy acce ss.

Preparing the Camcorde r 38 Using a T ripod with 0.64 cm ( 1/4 in.) Mounting Screws T o use a tripod w ith 0.64 cm (1/4 in.) mounting scr ews, first attach the supplied tripo d adapter base to the camcor der and then attach the tripod to the adapter base.
39 Preparing the Camcorde r Adjust ing the Grip Belt Adjust the grip be lt so tha t you can reac h the ST A RT/STOP button on the grip unit with yo ur index finger but still ha ve a comfortable but secure gri p. IMPORT ANT • Be careful not to drop the camcor d er when adjustin g the grip belt.

The cam corder is equipped with two CF car d slots. Initialize r ecording media ( A 43) when yo u use them with this camcorder for the first time.

3 49 Recording Recor ding Video This section explains the r ecording basic s. Before you begi n r ecording, m ake a test recor ding first to check if the camcor der operates corr ectly . Record f or appr oximately 6 minutes at 50 Mbps ( A 55). Should the camcorder fail to oper ate correctly , ref er to Tr o u b l e s h o o t i n g ( A 162).

51 Recording V ideo • Y ou can use [ w Other Functions] > [Clips] > [D elete Last Clip] ( A 154) to delete the last clip r ecorded. However , you cann ot delete the last clip if double slot re cording is on.

This allows you to easily adjust m ain camera functions like the shutter speed, white bal ance and ISO speed/gain even when the monitor unit is not attached to the camcor der without having to use the viewf inder .

Shutter Sp eed 58 Shutter Speed Set the shutter speed based on the reco rding conditions . For example, you may want to set slower shutter speeds in darker envir onments. The cam corder offers the following 5 modes. [Speed]: Allows you t o set the shutter speed (in fractions of a second).

Shutter Sp eed 60 NOTES • When recor ding under artificial light sour ces such as fluorescent, mer cury or haloge n lamps, the screen may flicker depending on the shutter speed. T o avoid the flic ker , set the shut ter speed mode to [Speed] and set the shutter speed to 1/50* o r 1/100 (or an eq uivalent shutter speed in angle mo de).
61 ISO Speed/ Gain ISO S peed/Gai n Depending on the shooting conditions you may want to adjust the brightness o f the image. Y ou can do so by changing the ISO speed or gain value to adjust the sensitiv ity of the sensor .
ISO Spee d/Ga in 62 Using the Contr ol Dial Y ou can adjust the value of the ISO speed o r gain us ing the contr ol dial on the camcorder o r that on the grip unit. Y ou w ill need to set the control dial’ s function to [I SO/Gain] in advance. Assigning ISO Speed/Gain Control to the Contr ol Dial 1 Open the [Control Dial] submenu.
63 ND Filter ND Filter Using the ND f ilters allows you keep the apertur e within an appropriate range when r ecor ding in bright su rroundin gs*. * Closin g down the a pertur e wh en r ecor ding un der brig ht con dition s may ca use th e pictu r e t o appear soft or out of focus.
# Adjusting the Aperture 64 # Adjusting the Ap erture Y ou can affect the bri ghtness of your recor dings or ch ange the depth of field by adju sting the aperture. F or example, use a small apertur e value fo r a shallow depth of f ield that isolates the subject in focus and nicely blurs the backgro und.

White Balance 66 Whit e Balance The camcor der uses an electronic whit e balance pr ocess to calibrate the pictur e and ensure accurate c olors under diff erent lighting conditions.
67 White Balance 3 Push the joystic k up/down or tur n the SELECT dial to chan ge the adjust ment value and then press SET . • The selected adjustment valu e will be set and the cam corder wi ll exit the direct setting mode. • On th e screen: The selec ted adjustment value wil l a ppear next to the white balance icon.

69 Adjusting the Focus Adjusting the Focus The camcor der does not have automatic focus control and fo cusing is done manually using t he focus ring on the attached lens. Never theless, the camcord er offers focus a ssistance functions to help you adjust the focus mor e accurately .

71 Onscr een Markers and Zebra Patterns Onscr een M arkers and Ze bra Patterns Using onscreen mar kers allows you to make sure your su bject is co rrectly fr amed an d is within the appr opriate safe area. The zebra patterns help you identify areas that ar e over exposed.

Displaying Zeb ra Patterns The camcor der has a zebra pattern feature tha t shows black and white diagonal stripes over areas that ar e over exposed.
73 Setting the Time Code Setting the Time Code The camcor der can genera te a time code signal and e mbe d it in your r ecordings. Y o u can have the camcorder output the time code signal from the HD/SD SDI term inal or TIME CODE ter minal ( A 79 ).
Setting the Time Code 74 • The time code setting screen appears with an ora nge selection frame indicating the hours. • T o reset the time code to [00:00:00.00], select [Reset] instead. If the running mode is set to [Fr ee Run], the time code will be r eset the moment you pr ess SET and keep running continuously fr om 00:00:00.

Setting the Us er Bit 76 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected from the date or the time of recor ding, or an identification code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system. T here ar e sixteen possible characte rs: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
77 Synchronizing with an External Device Synchr onizing with an External Device Using genlock synchronization, you can synchronize this cam cor der’ s video signal to that of an external video device. Similarly , using an external time code signal, you can synchr onize this camcor der’ s time code to the external signal.
Synchronizing with an External Device 78 Time Code Signal Input An external SMPTE-standard L TC timing signal received fr om the TIME CODE terminal w ill be rec orded as the time co de. The user bit of the external timing signal can also be recor ded.
79 Synchronizing with an External Device Refer ence Video Signal Output Y ou can output the camcor der’ s video signal as a r efer e nce sync signal (analog black burst or tri-level signal) through the SYNC OUT terminal to synchr oniz e an external device to this camcor der .
Recording Audio 80 Rec or ding A udi o The camcor der features two-channel li near PCM audio re cording and pl ayback with a sampling fre quency of 48 kHz. Y ou can r ecord audio using commerci ally availa ble micr ophones (XLR terminal, MIC terminal) or line input (XLR terminal).

85 Using Metadata Using Metadata The camcor der automatically adds metadata to clips while they ar e being reco rded. Y ou can use the supplied Canon XF Utility softwar e to check and sea rch for specific meta data. Y o u can also cr eate and transfer a user memo remo tely using the W i-Fi Remote application ( A 47).

87 Colors Bars/A udio Reference Signal Colors Bars/Audio Reference S ignal Y ou can have the camcorder generate and r ecord color bars and a 1 kHz audio refe r ence signal and output them from the HD/SD SDI terminal, HDMI OUT term inal, SY NC OUT term inal 1 and × (headphone) terminal 2 .
Video Scopes 88 Video Scopes The camcor der can display a simplif ied waveform monitor or vectorscope. It can also display an edge monito r* to help you focus. The video scopes appear only o n the LCD scree n. They do not appear in the viewfinder or on an external monitor .

Adding Marks while Recording 90 Adding Mark s while Recor ding When recor ding, you can flag a n important shot in a clip by adding a “ shot mark” ( ! ). There are two types o f shot marks, shot mark 1 ( " ) and shot ma rk 2 ( # ), and you can add either or both types to a single clip.
91 Adding Marks while Rec ording NOTES • There may be up to a 0.5 second delay from when yo u pr ess the button to when the cam corder adds the shot mark. When u sing the Wi-Fi Remote application, the delay may be lon ger depending on the conditions of the wir eless signal.

93 Special Re cording Modes Special Recording Modes The camcor der featur es 4 special reco rding modes. Interva l reco rdi ng ([Interva l Rec]): The cam corde r will automat ically r ecor d a p re-d efined numb er of fra mes at a pre- defined interval.
Special Reco rding Modes 94 4 Press the ST ART/STOP button again to stop reco rding. • All of the recor ded frames are joined together into one clip. • The tally lamps go out and [INT STBY] appear s at the top of the screen (with [INT ] flashing).
